Chapter 9 - The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

My brother was standing in my mansion.

Alive.

Standing.

Watching us through the security camera like he had been waiting for this moment.

Nobody spoke.

Not even me.

Because some truths were too impossible to accept immediately.

My brother, Adrian.

The person everyone told me died six years ago in a private plane accident.

The person whose funeral I attended.

The person whose ashes I kept in my father's memorial room.

The person who was supposed to be gone forever.

He was alive.

And he was inside my home.

Thomas moved first.

His hand went toward his weapon.

I stopped him.

"Wait."

Thomas looked at me.

"Daniel, that's him."

"I know."

"No."

His voice became serious.

"You don't understand."

I looked at the screen.

Adrian stood in the hallway.

Calm.

Relaxed.

Like he wasn't walking through the house of the brother he had betrayed.

"Then explain."

Thomas hesitated.

And that hesitation told me everything.

"You knew."

He looked away.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"You knew he was alive."

Thomas didn't answer.

My anger rose.

"Everyone knew something except me."

"Daniel—"

"No."

I raised my hand.

"Not another excuse."

The underground room became silent.

Claire looked at the floor.

Marcus looked at Thomas.

Even Lily was watching me.

My daughter.

The child who lost her voice because of secrets adults refused to tell.

I turned back to the monitor.

"Why is he here?"

Nobody answered.

Then the speakers inside the room turned on.

A voice came through.

My brother's voice.

"Because you finally found the truth."

Everyone froze.

I looked at the camera.

"Adrian."

A small smile appeared on the screen.

"Hello, Daniel."

The sound of his voice after all these years felt wrong.

Like hearing a ghost speak.

"You have a lot of questions."

I stepped closer.

"Start answering."

He laughed quietly.

"You still sound exactly the same."

"Where is Elena?"

Silence.

Then:

"Still asking about her before asking about yourself."

My jaw tightened.

"Where is my wife?"

Adrian looked directly into the camera.

"Alive."

Emma covered her mouth.

Claire closed her eyes.

Lily grabbed my hand.

Alive.

That word was all I had wanted for three years.

But coming from Adrian...

It felt dangerous.

"Where is she?"

"Somewhere safe."

"You expect me to believe you?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"Because I know what you think."

The camera moved slightly.

Adrian walked through the hallway.

"I know you think I killed her."

I didn't respond.

Because I did.

"I know you think I betrayed you."

Still silence.

"But the truth is..."

He stopped.

"The person who betrayed you wasn't me."

I looked at Thomas.

Then Marcus.

Then Claire.

Everyone had said the same thing.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Someone inside.

"Then who?"

Adrian smiled.

"You're still asking the wrong question."

I felt my anger rising.

"I don't have time for games."

"Neither did Elena."

The room went cold.

"Do not say her name."

Adrian's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked serious.

"She knew you would react like this."

"How would she know?"

"Because she knew you better than anyone."

He paused.

"And because she knew what you did."

The words hit differently.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian looked at the camera.

"Ask yourself why Elena disappeared."

"I know why."

"No."

His voice became sharper.

"You know what everyone wanted you to believe."

The screen flickered.

Then another image appeared.

A document.

An old document.

My signature at the bottom.

I stared.

Because I recognized it.

"What is that?"

Adrian's voice came through.

"The order."

My stomach tightened.

"What order?"

"The order that started everything."

I looked closer.

The document was blurry.

But the signature...

It was mine.

No.

Impossible.

"I never signed that."

Adrian smiled.

"That's what I said too."

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Thomas.

"What is he talking about?"

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

That was the first time I saw real fear in his eyes.

"Thomas."

He didn't answer.

"Thomas."

Finally, he spoke.

"Three years ago, before Elena disappeared, she found a file."

"What file?"

He looked at me.

"A file showing that someone had been using your identity."

The room became silent.

"Using my identity for what?"

Thomas looked down.

"To authorize operations."

"What operations?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Tell me."

Thomas took a breath.

"Operations that destroyed people."

The words felt like a knife.

"What people?"

Thomas looked at me.

"People who tried to expose the organization."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Daniel—"

"No."

I looked at the document again.

"My name was used."

Thomas nodded.

"Yes."

"And Elena found it."

"Yes."

"And she thought I was involved."

Thomas didn't answer.

But silence was enough.

My chest tightened.

Because suddenly I understood.

Elena didn't disappear because she was afraid of someone else.

She disappeared because she was afraid of me.

Not the real me.

The version of me someone had created.

The monster wearing my name.

I looked at Lily.

My daughter had watched someone wearing my clothes.

Using my voice.

Pretending to be me.

"What happened that night?"

Adrian's voice interrupted.

"Daniel."

I looked at the screen.

"That night, Elena discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

"That someone had been controlling your organization from the beginning."

"Who?"

Adrian looked away from the camera.

For a moment, he looked tired.

Not victorious.

Tired.

"The person who raised us."

My blood ran cold.

Because there was only one person who fit that description.

Our father.

But he had been dead for ten years.

"No."

Adrian looked back.

"Yes."

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

The room went silent.

Thomas whispered:

"Daniel..."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Thomas looked terrified.

"Your father's death..."

I waited.

"It wasn't an accident."

Everything stopped.

The memories.

The stories.

The years.

All of it.

My father.

The man who built our family.

The man who taught me how to survive.

The man whose death changed everything.

"He was alive when Elena disappeared."

I stared at Thomas.

"You knew."

Thomas looked away.

"I found out too late."

My phone vibrated.

A new message.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One photo.

A hospital room.

A woman lying on a bed.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized her.

Elena.

Alive.

But there was another person standing beside her.

Holding her hand.

The message below contained only one sentence.

"Ask your wife why she chose to protect the man who destroyed you."

Then another photo arrived.

This one was closer.

Showing Elena's face.

And beside her...

The person she was looking at with fear.

May you like

The person standing next to her bed.

My father.
