Chapter 2 - The Maid Who Took The Bullet Meant For My Family

The first thing I did after the lights went out was grab Lily.
Not Emma.
Not Claire.
Lily.
Because every instinct I had built over fifteen years of protecting my empire told me one thing.
When someone attacks your home, they don't start with your money.
They start with what you love.
"Lily, stay behind me."
My youngest daughter didn't argue.
She simply held onto my hand.
That alone nearly broke me.
For three years, she had lived inside a silence nobody could reach.
Doctors.
Therapists.
Family members.
Everyone tried.
Everyone failed.
But the moment danger entered our home, she found her voice.
Not for herself.
For Claire.
The kitchen was dark except for the faint glow coming from the emergency lights along the floor.
My security team moved immediately.
"Lock down the house," I ordered.
The men nodded and disappeared into the hallway.
Emma stayed frozen beside the door.
Her eyes kept moving between Claire and me.
"Dad..."
I looked at her.
"When did this happen?"
She swallowed.
"I don't know."
"Emma."
My voice became sharper.
She flinched.
"I mean it. When did this happen?"
She looked down.
"Tonight."
I stared at her.
"Someone came into the house tonight?"
"No."
Her answer came too quickly.
I noticed.
"Then tell me the truth."
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know who they were."
Claire interrupted.
"She doesn't."
I turned toward the maid.
She was still sitting on the floor.
Still bleeding.
Still trying to make herself smaller.
But there was something different about her now.
For years, I had seen Claire as someone who avoided attention.
Now I realized something.
She wasn't avoiding attention.
She was avoiding danger.
"How long have you known?" I asked.
Claire looked at me.
"Known what?"
"That someone was targeting my family."
Her silence answered before her words did.
I stepped closer.
"Claire."
She looked away.
That was the first time I had ever seen her afraid.
Not for herself.
For us.
"I suspected something was wrong two months ago."
Emma looked shocked.
"Two months?"
Claire nodded.
"I found small things."
"What things?"
"Doors unlocked that should have been locked."
"Security cameras turning off for exactly seven minutes every night."
"Missing files."
I felt my jaw tighten.
Seven minutes.
A person inside my organization had access to my systems.
A person who understood my security.
A person who knew my habits.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Claire looked directly at me.
"Because whoever was doing it knew you."
The room became silent.
She continued.
"They knew how you think."
She looked toward Lily.
"They knew what would hurt you."
I looked at my daughter.
Three years without speaking.
Three years of wondering if I had failed her.
And now I was realizing someone had been watching my family the entire time.
"What happened tonight?" I asked.
Claire lowered her eyes.
"They came for something."
"What?"
"I don't know."
I looked at the metal fragment beside her.
"Then explain this."
Her expression changed.
"I was cleaning the kitchen."
"At midnight?"
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
"I heard something."
"What?"
"A sound behind the wall."
I frowned.
"The wall?"
Claire pointed toward the far side of the kitchen.
"The old service passage."
I looked.
There was a decorative marble panel near the pantry.
Most people would never notice it.
But I knew this house.
Every hidden entrance.
Every emergency exit.
Every weakness.
That passage had been sealed when I bought the mansion.
"That passage hasn't been opened in years."
Claire whispered.
"Someone opened it tonight."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who?"
Claire didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Lily.
My daughter looked back at her.
Like they shared something I didn't understand.
"Lily saw them."
Emma gasped.
"What?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"That's why she stopped talking."
My entire body went still.
"What did you just say?"
Claire looked at me.
"The night Lily stopped speaking wasn't because she forgot how."
The words landed like a weapon.
I stared at my youngest daughter.
"No."
Claire's voice softened.
"She was scared."
I looked at Lily.
Her small hand tightened around mine.
"Lily."
She looked up.
I crouched down.
"Did someone hurt you?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
She looked toward Claire.
Then toward the hidden passage.
And for the first time in three years...
She shook her head.
Not no.
Not yes.
A warning.
Someone had taught my daughter to be afraid.
And I wanted to know who.
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was one photo.
A picture of my mansion.
Taken from inside.
My breathing stopped.
Because the photo had been taken minutes ago.
The message below contained only five words.
"You're looking in the wrong place."
I showed it to my security chief.
His face changed.
"What?"
I looked at him.
"You recognize this?"
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
"Say it."
He swallowed.
"The angle."
"What about it?"
"Nobody outside the house could take that picture."
The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
Someone was inside.
Someone had been inside while we were standing here.
I turned toward Claire.
"Where exactly did you find the metal fragment?"
She pointed toward the floor.
"Near the service passage."
I walked there.
My flashlight moved across the marble.
Then stopped.
A small trail.
Not blood.
Something else.
Black dust.
Like it had come from inside the wall.
I touched it.
My fingers turned dark.
"Someone was hiding something here."
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
"What?"
She looked at me.
"I don't know."
A sound came from behind the marble panel.
Everyone froze.
A soft click.
Then another.
The hidden mechanism was moving.
My security team raised their weapons.
Emma grabbed Lily.
Claire tried to stand despite her injury.
I held up my hand.
Nobody moved.
The panel slowly opened.
Not from the outside.
From inside.
A person had been waiting behind the wall.
The opening became wider.
A shadow appeared.
Then a familiar voice whispered my name.
"Daniel..."
I stopped breathing.
May you like
Because I knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.
