Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Risked Everything

The photo stayed on the screen.

Elena.

Alive.

Looking at someone beside her hospital bed.

My father.

For years, I had stood in front of his grave.

For years, I believed I understood the man who raised me.

A strict man.

A powerful man.

A man who taught me that weakness was something enemies could exploit.

But now I was staring at proof that everything I knew about him was a lie.

My father was alive.

And he had been standing beside my wife.

The room felt smaller.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Emma whispered:

"Grandpa?"

Her voice was filled with disbelief.

Because she remembered him too.

She was only fourteen when he died.

But she remembered the way he used to hold her hand.

The way he brought her gifts.

The way everyone believed he loved our family.

I looked at the screen again.

The man beside Elena was older.

But there was no mistake.

It was him.

My father.

Adrian's voice came through the speaker.

"You finally understand."

I looked at the camera.

"Where is he?"

A pause.

Then:

"Closer than you think."

My hand tightened.

"Bring him to me."

Adrian laughed softly.

"You still think you are in control."

"I am."

"No, Daniel."

His voice became colder.

"You lost control the moment you believed your own memories."

I hated that he was right.

Because every answer created more questions.

Every truth created a bigger lie.

I looked at Thomas.

"Tell me everything."

Thomas remained silent.

"Now."

He looked at Marcus.

Then Claire.

Finally, he nodded.

"Your father didn't die."

Emma stepped back.

"How?"

Thomas took a breath.

"He planned it."

"Why?"

"Because he knew someone was coming after him."

I frowned.

"Someone?"

Thomas looked at me.

"The same person who came after Elena."

I looked toward Adrian's image.

"Then why was Adrian involved?"

Thomas's face changed.

"Because Adrian wasn't working against you."

The room froze.

I stared.

"What?"

"He was trying to find your father."

I looked at the screen.

My brother.

The man I believed betrayed me.

The man I believed destroyed my family.

"You expect me to believe Adrian is innocent?"

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"I expect you to understand that nobody in this story is what they appear to be."

I hated those words.

Because they were true.

I turned toward Marcus.

"And you?"

Marcus looked at me.

"I was protecting Elena."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Elena believed you were being watched."

"By my own father?"

Marcus nodded.

The answer felt impossible.

But every impossible thing had become real tonight.

Claire stepped forward.

"Daniel."

I looked at her.

"There is something else."

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

"What?"

She looked at Lily.

My daughter was holding the old photograph.

The one from three years ago.

The one showing her with Elena.

"Lily didn't only see your father."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Claire's eyes filled with sadness.

"She saw Elena make a choice."

"What choice?"

Claire looked down.

"She chose to disappear."

The words hit me.

"No."

"Daniel..."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"My wife would never leave us."

Claire's voice broke.

"She didn't leave you."

She looked at Lily.

"She sacrificed herself."

I looked at my daughter.

"Lily."

She looked up.

"Mom told me..."

Her voice shook.

I waited.

"Mom told me Daddy would be angry."

My heart stopped.

"Angry about what?"

She looked at the floor.

"About the truth."

The room became silent.

I lowered myself.

"Lily, what truth?"

She squeezed the photograph.

"Mom said someone made Daddy forget."

My blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?"

She shook her head.

"I don't know."

Then she looked at Thomas.

"Uncle Thomas knows."

Everyone turned.

Thomas froze.

"Lily..."

"You told Mom."

The words were barely audible.

But everyone heard them.

I looked at Thomas.

"What did you tell my wife?"

Thomas didn't answer.

My patience disappeared.

"What did you tell her?"

He finally spoke.

"The truth about the accident."

"What accident?"

Thomas looked at me.

"The accident you survived."

I stopped.

"What?"

Nobody moved.

Thomas continued.

"Daniel, you weren't supposed to survive that night."

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

"What are you talking about?"

Thomas looked at the photograph.

"The crash that killed Elena..."

He paused.

"Was meant to kill you."

Emma gasped.

Claire closed her eyes.

I couldn't speak.

Because suddenly every memory of that night felt different.

The road.

The impact.

The fire.

The doctors telling me I was lucky.

Lucky.

That was the word everyone used.

But what if I wasn't lucky?

What if I was supposed to die?

"Why?"

Thomas looked at me.

"Because your father wanted control of the organization."

I shook my head.

"My father loved me."

Thomas didn't answer.

That silence hurt.

"He loved what you represented."

I stared.

"What does that mean?"

"He built everything."

Thomas stepped closer.

"But you became better than him."

I didn't move.

"You became someone people respected."

Someone people followed.

Someone people trusted.

Thomas continued.

"Your father didn't want to lose what he built."

"So he tried to kill me?"

"He tried to erase you."

My hands became fists.

"And Elena?"

Thomas looked away.

"She found out."

Everything became clear.

Elena wasn't the target.

She was the witness.

She knew the truth.

And she tried to protect me.

"Lily saw it."

Claire nodded.

"She saw your father after the crash."

I looked at Lily.

My daughter had carried that memory alone.

For three years.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Claire answered softly.

"Because the person who scared her looked exactly like you."

I closed my eyes.

My daughter wasn't afraid of speaking.

She was afraid nobody would believe her.

A sound suddenly echoed from above.

A door opening.

Everyone froze.

The underground room's monitor flickered.

The mansion camera turned on.

Someone was walking through the hallway.

Not hiding.

Not rushing.

Walking calmly.

Adrian's voice became urgent.

"Daniel."

I looked at the speaker.

"Get your family out."

"Why?"

For the first time...

Adrian sounded afraid.

"Because he knows you found the room."

The camera moved.

The person reached the entrance of the hidden passage.

The lights above turned on.

A shadow appeared.

Then a voice came through the mansion.

A voice I had not heard in years.

A voice that belonged to the man I buried.

"Daniel."

Everyone froze.

The hidden door began opening.

And my father's voice whispered:

May you like

"Come upstairs, son."

"Your mother wants to see you."
