Chapter 3 - The Daughter Who Found Her Voice Again

The shadow stepped out from behind the hidden wall.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

For a few seconds, the only sound inside the kitchen was the quiet hum of the emergency lights and the rain tapping against the glass windows.

Then the man spoke again.

"Daniel."

My fingers tightened around the weapon in my hand.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it better than anyone.

But my mind refused to accept what my ears were telling me.

The man stepped into the light.

His face was thinner.

His hair was longer.

There was a scar running along the side of his jaw.

But his eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Focused.

Familiar.

"Thomas."

The name left my mouth like a memory I had buried years ago.

Emma looked between us.

"Dad... who is that?"

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't know how.

Thomas Reed had been my closest friend.

My partner.

The only person who knew every secret behind my organization.

He was the man who stood beside me when I had nothing.

The man who helped me build everything.

And the man who died three years ago.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

"You look surprised," Thomas said.

I kept my weapon raised.

"You died."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"No."

He looked around the kitchen.

"I disappeared."

The difference between those two things was everything.

My security team aimed their weapons at him.

"Sir, give the order."

I didn't.

Not yet.

Because too many questions were standing in front of me.

"Why are you in my house?"

Thomas looked at Lily.

And the moment his eyes landed on my daughter, my entire body became tense.

"Because I was trying to protect her."

The room changed.

Claire looked down.

Emma stepped closer to Lily.

And I felt something inside me break.

"Don't say her name."

Thomas looked back at me.

"You think I wanted any of this?"

"You were gone."

"I had to be."

"You let everyone believe you were dead."

"Because someone wanted me dead."

I stared at him.

"Who?"

Thomas didn't answer immediately.

That bothered me.

Because Thomas was never afraid of anything.

But now...

Now he looked afraid.

"Someone close to you."

My expression hardened.

"I already know someone betrayed me."

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"You don't understand."

He stepped closer.

"The person who betrayed you isn't trying to steal your company."

He looked toward Lily.

"They are trying to erase your family."

Nobody spoke.

The words hung in the air.

I looked at Claire.

She looked away.

That was when I understood.

She knew more than she had told me.

"Claire."

Her eyes lifted.

"How much do you know?"

She remained silent.

I hated that.

Not because she was hiding something.

Because she was protecting something.

And I didn't know if that something was my family or the person who wanted to destroy it.

"Claire."

Her voice was quiet.

"I knew Thomas was alive."

Emma looked shocked.

"You knew?"

Claire nodded.

"I helped him stay hidden."

I felt anger rise.

"You helped a dead man hide inside my house?"

"No."

Claire looked at me.

"I helped a man who was trying to save your daughter."

The words stopped me.

Thomas reached into his coat slowly.

My security team reacted instantly.

"Don't move!"

He froze.

Then slowly pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this for three years."

He placed it on the marble counter.

"It belongs to Lily."

I looked at the envelope.

My daughter's name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

The handwriting was mine.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

But I had never written it.

"What is that?"

Thomas looked at me.

"The reason Lily stopped speaking."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

I walked toward the envelope.

Every step felt heavier.

I picked it up.

My hands were steady.

But my mind wasn't.

Inside was a single photograph.

A picture of Lily.

Three years younger.

Standing in the mansion hallway.

Behind her was a man.

A man whose face had been scratched away.

On the back of the photograph were six words.

"She saw what she shouldn't have."

I looked at Lily.

She was crying silently.

But she wasn't looking at the photo.

She was looking at Thomas.

Like she remembered him.

"Lily."

She slowly stepped forward.

Emma tried to stop her.

"No."

Lily shook her head.

The first time she had ever done that in years.

She walked toward Thomas.

Everyone watched.

She stopped in front of him.

Then she whispered.

"Uncle Thomas."

Emma covered her mouth.

Claire closed her eyes.

And I felt like the entire world shifted.

Because Lily had not only remembered him.

She trusted him.

"How does she know you?"

I looked at Thomas.

He didn't answer.

Lily did.

Her voice was weak.

Broken.

But real.

"He saved me."

Nobody moved.

My daughter looked at me.

"Dad..."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"He told me not to scream."

I felt cold.

"What?"

She looked at the floor.

"He told me the bad man would hear me."

The room went silent.

Three years.

Three years of silence.

And now every word felt like a wound opening.

"What bad man?"

Lily's face changed.

Fear returned.

She grabbed my hand.

"The man who came through the kitchen."

I looked toward the hidden passage.

My mind raced.

Someone had entered my house.

Someone had scared my daughter.

Someone had made her stop speaking.

But why?

Thomas stepped closer.

"Daniel."

I looked at him.

"The person who came through that passage wasn't looking for money."

"What were they looking for?"

Thomas stared at Lily.

"They were looking for what she remembered."

I felt my blood run cold.

My daughter knew something.

Something important.

Something dangerous.

And someone had spent three years making sure she never told me.

I turned toward Claire.

"You knew."

She nodded slowly.

"I knew Lily saw something."

"What?"

Claire's eyes filled with guilt.

"The night she stopped talking..."

She paused.

"The night your wife died."

The room froze.

Nobody mentioned her.

Not in years.

My wife, Elena.

The woman I lost three years ago.

The accident that everyone told me was unavoidable.

The accident that destroyed my daughter.

The accident that destroyed my family.

I stared at Claire.

"What does Elena have to do with this?"

Claire opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every phone in the room vibrated at the same time.

Mine.

Emma's.

My security team's.

Claire's.

Thomas's.

A message appeared on every screen.

One sentence.

One name.

I looked down.

And my entire body went still.

May you like

Because the message came from the person who was supposed to be buried beside my wife.

"Daniel, ask Claire why she helped me fake my death."
