Chapter 12 - The Truth Behind The Locked Kitchen Door

The object in Claire's hand was small.

But the moment I saw it...

I knew it had the power to destroy everything.

A key.

An old metal key.

The same kind used for the hidden systems inside my mansion.

Nobody spoke.

Claire stood frozen.

Her hand shaking.

Lily stared at her with tears in her eyes.

And I felt something I hadn't felt in years.

Betrayal.

Not the kind that came from enemies.

The kind that came from someone you trusted.

"Claire."

My voice was quiet.

She looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words hurt more than any excuse.

Because they confirmed it.

She had been hiding something.

"You had this."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"The entire time?"

"Yes."

Emma looked at her.

"Why?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"Because Elena asked me to."

The room became silent.

Again.

Another secret.

Another promise.

Another person who chose to protect the truth from me.

I looked at my father.

He stood near the door.

Watching.

Almost enjoying the confusion.

Because that was what he wanted.

Everyone turning against everyone.

Everyone questioning who was telling the truth.

"You knew this would happen."

My father looked at me.

"Of course."

"You brought me here."

"No."

He smiled slightly.

"You brought yourself here."

I ignored him.

My attention stayed on Claire.

"Explain."

Claire looked at Lily.

Then Emma.

Then me.

"Three years ago, Elena discovered someone was using your identity."

I nodded.

"I know."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"You don't."

She stepped closer.

"The person wasn't only using your name."

She looked at my father.

"They were creating a version of you."

My expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

Claire held the key tighter.

"It means someone wanted everyone to believe you were the villain."

Silence.

My father didn't react.

That bothered me.

Because he knew.

Claire continued.

"They created fake records."

"Fake messages."

"Fake orders."

"Everything."

My hands tightened.

"And Elena found them."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

Claire looked down.

"Because she tried."

The words stopped me.

"What?"

"She tried to tell you."

I remembered.

The last week before the accident.

Elena calling me.

Asking me to come home early.

Telling me something was wrong.

I thought she was scared.

I thought she was overreacting.

I thought I had everything under control.

Claire continued.

"But someone intercepted her messages."

My eyes moved to my father.

He didn't deny it.

"Who?"

Claire whispered:

"Your father."

The room changed.

My father finally spoke.

"Careful."

Claire looked at him.

"I spent three years protecting your granddaughter."

His expression hardened.

"You were supposed to stay quiet."

Claire laughed softly.

A sad sound.

"No."

She looked at Lily.

"I was supposed to protect her."

I looked at Lily.

My daughter had been carrying this pain alone.

And Claire had been the only person who understood.

"Why did Elena tell you to open the door that night?"

Everyone became still.

Because that was the question.

The one nobody answered.

The one Lily had revealed.

Claire looked at me.

"Because she knew someone was coming."

"Who?"

Claire hesitated.

"Your father."

My father looked away.

Not surprised.

That was enough.

"But Lily said Claire opened the door."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because Elena was trapped."

The room went quiet.

"She told me if anything happened, I had to get Lily out."

I frowned.

"Get her out?"

Claire nodded.

"Elena knew someone was coming through the kitchen passage."

The same passage.

The same hidden entrance.

The same place everything started.

"Why didn't you take Lily and run?"

Claire looked at my daughter.

"Because Lily refused."

Everyone looked at Lily.

She wiped her tears.

"I wanted Daddy."

My heart broke.

Claire continued.

"Elena told me to take Lily somewhere safe."

"But?"

Claire looked at the floor.

"But Lily saw him."

"Who?"

Claire's voice became barely audible.

"The man pretending to be you."

The room froze.

My father looked at Lily.

And for the first time...

He looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

"What did Lily see?"

Claire didn't answer.

Lily did.

"He hurt Mommy."

I crouched down.

"Lily."

She looked at me.

"He was wearing Daddy's jacket."

My breathing stopped.

"He had Daddy's voice."

My daughter began crying.

"And he told Mommy..."

She covered her mouth.

I held her hand.

"What did he tell her?"

Lily looked at my father.

Then whispered:

"He said Grandpa told him to do it."

Nobody moved.

The words stayed there.

Heavy.

Impossible.

My father looked at Lily.

And for the first time, his calm expression disappeared.

"You don't remember correctly."

Lily immediately hid behind me.

That reaction told me everything.

My father stepped forward.

"Daniel, children misunderstand things."

I turned.

"Don't."

My voice stopped him.

"Do not talk about my daughter like she is confused."

His face hardened.

"You are letting emotions control you."

"No."

I looked at him.

"I'm finally seeing clearly."

The lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone turned.

The mansion security system came back online.

The screens above the hidden room activated.

One camera feed appeared.

The hallway.

Someone was standing outside.

Not my father.

Not Adrian.

Someone else.

Thomas moved closer.

His face changed.

"That's impossible."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

The person on the camera slowly turned.

The image became clearer.

And my heart stopped.

Because I recognized her.

Elena.

Alive.

Standing inside my mansion.

But she wasn't alone.

A man stood behind her.

Holding a gun.

The camera zoomed closer.

Elena looked directly into the lens.

Her lips moved.

No sound came through.

But I understood.

She was warning us.

Then the man behind her stepped forward.

The camera focused on his face.

And Thomas whispered:

"No..."

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Thomas couldn't answer.

May you like

Because the man standing beside my wife was the one person everyone believed had died years ago...

My mother.
