Chapter 4 - The Enemy Inside My Organization

The message stayed on my screen.

I read it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

"Daniel, ask Claire why she helped me fake my death."

My hand tightened around the phone.

Because only one person could have sent that message.

Elena.

My wife.

The woman I buried three years ago.

The woman whose death had destroyed everything I thought I understood.

For a moment, nobody in the kitchen moved.

Not Thomas.

Not Claire.

Not my daughters.

Everyone was waiting for my reaction.

Everyone except Claire.

She looked like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long and finally realized there was no place left to hide it.

"Claire."

My voice was quiet.

That made it more dangerous.

She looked at me.

"Tell me."

Her lips trembled.

"I was going to."

"When?"

She looked down.

"I don't know."

I stepped closer.

"That is not an answer."

Claire swallowed.

"I was waiting until Lily was ready."

I looked at my youngest daughter.

She stood between Emma and Thomas.

Still holding my hand.

Still afraid.

But no longer silent.

"You knew my wife was alive?"

Claire closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Emma gasped.

"Dad..."

She looked at me.

"I don't understand."

Neither did I.

My entire life had been built on controlling information.

Knowing what others didn't know.

Seeing what others missed.

But inside my own home...

Inside my own family...

I had been blind.

"Where is she?"

Claire didn't answer.

That was enough.

My anger disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

Fear.

Because if Elena was alive...

Then someone had been lying for three years.

And that someone had access to my house.

My company.

My security.

My children.

I turned toward Thomas.

"You knew."

He didn't deny it.

"Yes."

The answer made Emma step back.

"Everyone knew except us?"

Thomas looked at her.

"No."

His voice softened.

"Not everyone."

I stared at him.

"Who knew?"

Thomas looked at my security team.

Nobody spoke.

That silence told me everything.

I turned slowly.

"Everyone leaves except Marcus."

My security chief looked surprised.

"Sir?"

"Now."

The guards exchanged looks.

Then moved.

Everyone except Marcus left the kitchen.

The moment the door closed, I looked at him.

"You have five seconds."

Marcus had worked for me for twelve years.

He was the man who knew every security protocol in this mansion.

Every camera.

Every entrance.

Every emergency system.

He had protected my family countless times.

Or at least...

I thought he had.

"I don't know what you think I did."

"Wrong answer."

I placed my phone on the counter.

The message was still visible.

Marcus looked at it.

His face changed.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Not surprise.

Fear.

"Who sent this?"

I asked.

Marcus looked away.

"I don't know."

I nodded.

"Four seconds."

"Daniel—"

"Three."

His breathing became heavier.

"Two."

"Elena is alive."

The words came out suddenly.

Nobody moved.

Emma covered her mouth.

Claire looked down.

Thomas closed his eyes.

But I didn't react.

Not because I wasn't shocked.

Because I had already been destroyed once by believing someone was dead.

I wasn't going to break again.

"Where?"

Marcus looked at me.

"I don't know."

"Another wrong answer."

"I swear."

I grabbed the front of his shirt.

"Who knew?"

He looked at Claire.

Then Thomas.

Then me.

"The board members."

My grip loosened slightly.

"My organization?"

Marcus nodded.

"Some of them."

"Why?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me there was something worse.

"Because they believed Elena had something."

"What?"

Marcus looked toward Lily.

"Proof."

The room became silent.

"What proof?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"What proof?"

Marcus lowered his voice.

"That someone inside your company was selling information."

I frowned.

"That's why I started investigating."

Marcus nodded.

"And that's why they tried to stop you."

I looked at Thomas.

"You knew."

Thomas nodded.

"Elena found it first."

The pieces started connecting.

The leaked files.

The security failures.

The attacks.

The hidden passage.

Lily's silence.

My wife's death.

It wasn't random.

It was one plan.

Someone had been cleaning up loose ends.

And my family was one of them.

"Tell me everything."

Thomas looked at Claire.

Then at Lily.

"Three years ago, Elena discovered someone inside your organization was moving money and information through a private network."

"Who?"

"We never found the top person."

I stared at him.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Thomas didn't react.

"Because everyone who got close disappeared."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Elena?"

Thomas nodded.

"They came after her."

Emma whispered.

"They killed Mom?"

Nobody answered.

That was the worst answer.

My daughter looked like she couldn't breathe.

I moved toward her.

But she stepped back.

"Dad..."

Her voice cracked.

"You knew something was wrong?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"You always said you protected us."

The words hurt more than any weapon.

Because she was right.

I had built walls.

Security.

Rules.

Systems.

And still someone reached my family.

"I thought I did."

Emma wiped her tears.

"But Lily saw something."

I looked at my youngest daughter.

"Lily."

She looked at me.

Her eyes were full of memories she had buried.

"What did you see?"

She became still.

Claire immediately moved.

"Lily doesn't have to answer."

I looked at her.

"No."

My voice softened.

"But she deserves to choose."

Lily looked at me.

For three years, I had wanted her to speak.

Now that she finally could...

I realized how much pain those words might carry.

She took a small breath.

"The man..."

Her voice shook.

"The man hurt Mommy."

Everyone froze.

"What man?"

Lily looked toward the hidden passage.

"He came from there."

I followed her eyes.

"What did he look like?"

She squeezed my hand.

"He wore Dad's suit."

My blood ran cold.

Because that meant something impossible.

Someone had entered my house pretending to be me.

Someone close enough to know my clothes.

My movements.

My life.

"Did you see his face?"

Lily nodded.

I lowered myself.

"Who was it?"

She looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

Then she whispered:

"The man who was sitting next to you at dinner that night."

My mind searched through every memory.

Every person.

Every meeting.

Every face.

Then Lily said one more thing.

"The man who told everyone Mommy was dead."

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood.

The person who destroyed my family had not been outside my world.

He had been sitting at my table.

Marcus suddenly reached for his phone.

Too quickly.

I saw it.

"Marcus."

He froze.

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing."

I looked at his hand.

"Show me."

He didn't move.

My security instincts screamed.

Something was wrong.

"Marcus."

Slowly...

He unlocked the phone.

A notification appeared.

One new message.

From an unknown number.

His face turned pale.

I grabbed the phone before he could hide it.

The message contained only three words.

"He knows everything."

Then another message arrived.

A location.

My old private office.

The one nobody had entered since Elena's death.

And beneath it was a photo.

A recent photo.

Taken inside the room.

May you like

Because sitting behind my old desk was someone waiting for me...

And the person in the picture was wearing my wife's wedding ring.
