Chapter 14 - The Last Enemy Standing

The voice came from the darkness.
"Brother."
Everyone froze.
Because there was only one person who called me that.
Adrian.
My brother.
The man who had been dead.
The man who had appeared and disappeared like a ghost throughout this nightmare.
The door opened slowly.
Adrian stepped inside.
No weapon.
No fear.
Just the same calm expression he always had.
My father looked at him.
And for the first time...
I saw anger mixed with disappointment.
"You."
Adrian looked at him.
"Yes."
My father laughed quietly.
"I thought you understood."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
He looked around the room.
"That's the problem."
The silence was unbearable.
I looked at Adrian.
"Tell me."
He turned toward me.
"The truth."
For years, I wanted that sentence.
Now that it was finally happening...
I wasn't sure I wanted to hear it.
"Everything."
Adrian nodded.
"Everything."
He stepped closer.
"Father didn't disappear because he was afraid."
My eyes moved toward my father.
"He disappeared because he was losing control."
Nobody spoke.
Adrian continued.
"When you became the leader of the organization, people followed you because they trusted you."
He looked at me.
"That terrified him."
My father remained silent.
"He spent his entire life building an empire based on fear."
Adrian's voice became colder.
"And then you built one based on loyalty."
I looked at my father.
"Is that why?"
He didn't answer.
Adrian did.
"Yes."
The room became quiet.
My father finally spoke.
"You know nothing."
Adrian looked at him.
"I know more than anyone."
A strange expression appeared on my father's face.
Not anger.
Pain.
"You were always weak."
Adrian smiled slightly.
"Maybe."
He looked at me.
"But I was never cruel."
The words hit harder than expected.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
Adrian was always different.
When we were children.
When my father demanded perfection.
When mistakes were punished.
Adrian was the one who protected me.
The one who took the blame.
The one who told me I didn't have to become like our father.
I had forgotten that.
Because someone wanted me to.
"Adrian."
He looked at me.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His expression softened.
"Because Elena asked me not to."
I looked at Elena.
She lowered her eyes.
"Why?"
Adrian answered.
"Because she believed if you knew the truth too soon, you would go after him."
I looked at my father.
"And?"
Adrian sighed.
"You would have died."
The room went silent.
Because I knew he was right.
Three years ago, I was different.
I would have attacked first.
Asked questions later.
And my father knew that.
He used my anger against me.
"Tell me about the accident."
Adrian looked at Elena.
Then back at me.
"The accident was planned."
I nodded.
"I know."
"No."
His voice became serious.
"You don't."
Everyone became still.
"The crash wasn't designed to kill you."
I frowned.
"What?"
Adrian looked at Lily.
"It was designed to make you believe you survived by accident."
I didn't understand.
"Explain."
He took a breath.
"Your father wanted you to disappear."
My father's expression changed.
"But Elena changed the plan."
I looked at her.
"How?"
Adrian continued.
"She found out before it happened."
Elena nodded.
"Your father had people inside the company."
"And inside the house."
Marcus looked down.
"Yes."
I looked at him.
He nodded.
"I was trying to find them."
Adrian continued.
"Elena knew the only way to save you was to make everyone believe you were gone."
I stared.
"She faked my death?"
"Yes."
The answer hurt.
Because suddenly the pain of three years became something else.
Not abandonment.
Protection.
"You let me grieve her."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"I had no choice."
"You had a choice."
She nodded.
"I know."
The silence between us was heavy.
Then Lily walked forward.
She took Elena's hand.
"Mom saved Daddy."
Everyone looked at her.
My daughter.
The child who had carried the truth alone.
She looked at my father.
"And Grandpa wanted Daddy gone."
My father stared at her.
For the first time...
He looked defeated.
"You don't understand what you're saying."
Lily stepped back.
But she didn't hide.
Not anymore.
"I remember."
My father became silent.
"What?"
Lily looked at me.
Then him.
"I remember everything."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Lily..."
She looked at me.
"The night Mommy disappeared..."
Her voice shook.
"But I remember Grandpa talking to someone."
My father's face changed.
"Who?"
Lily looked at Adrian.
Then whispered:
"Uncle Adrian."
Everyone froze.
I looked at Adrian.
"What?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
And I understood.
There was still one more secret.
"Adrian."
He didn't answer.
"Tell me."
Slowly...
He looked at me.
"I was there."
The room went silent.
"That night?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
My heart tightened.
"You were there when Elena disappeared?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
He looked broken.
"Because I was trying to stop him."
He pointed toward our father.
"But I was too late."
My father suddenly moved.
Fast.
Faster than anyone expected.
He grabbed a weapon hidden beneath the table.
Everything happened at once.
Marcus raised his gun.
Thomas moved toward him.
Claire pulled Lily away.
Elena shouted my name.
But my father wasn't aiming at me.
He was aiming at Adrian.
A single shot echoed.
Adrian fell.
"NO!"
I moved.
I don't remember crossing the room.
I only remember catching him before he hit the floor.
Blood spread across his shirt.
My father stood frozen.
Not because he regretted it.
Because he realized something.
Everyone had seen.
Everyone had chosen.
Even my mother.
Even Elena.
Even me.
They all chose Adrian.
The man he spent years trying to erase.
Security alarms suddenly screamed.
Red lights flashed across the mansion.
Marcus looked at his phone.
His face changed.
"What?"
I looked at him.
"What happened?"
He turned the screen toward me.
One message.
One image.
A live camera feed from outside the mansion.
Hundreds of vehicles surrounded the property.
Men in black uniforms standing everywhere.
My father looked at the screen.
And smiled.
I looked at him.
"What did you do?"
He wiped the blood from his hand.
"I made sure I was never the only enemy."
My heart sank.
Because behind him...
May you like
The mansion doors slowly opened.
And the person walking inside was the one person nobody expected to see...
