Chapter 13 - The Night My Family Fought Back

My mother was alive.

The thought should have been impossible.

But after everything I had discovered...

Impossible was the only thing that made sense.

She stood beside Elena on the security camera.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

My mother.

The woman everyone told me had died ten years ago.

The woman whose funeral I attended.

The woman whose portrait hung in my father's memorial room.

Alive.

Inside my mansion.

Holding a weapon.

Nobody moved.

Then Thomas whispered:

"No..."

I looked at him.

"You knew?"

He shook his head.

"No."

For once, there was real fear in his voice.

Not confusion.

Not hesitation.

Fear.

My father looked at the screen.

And for the first time since he appeared...

He looked defeated.

Not because of us.

Because of her.

"She wasn't supposed to be here."

I turned toward him.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

My anger exploded.

"Who wasn't supposed to be here?"

My father looked at the screen.

"My wife."

The words hit the room.

My mother.

His wife.

The woman who had been missing for ten years.

The woman who apparently knew every secret buried inside my family.

The woman who might have been the beginning of everything.

The security feed suddenly cut.

The screen went black.

Then a message appeared.

Not from an unknown number.

Not from a hidden account.

From the mansion's own system.

"Daniel. Come alone."

Everyone looked at me.

Thomas immediately shook his head.

"No."

I looked at him.

"No?"

"It's a trap."

"Obviously."

"Then why would you go?"

Because it was my family.

Because every secret had led to this moment.

Because Elena was alive.

Because my mother was alive.

Because I had spent three years searching for answers.

"I need the truth."

Thomas stepped closer.

"Daniel, the truth is exactly what they used to control you."

I looked at him.

"Then I'll take control back."

I turned toward the others.

"Everyone stays here."

Emma immediately shook her head.

"No."

I looked at her.

"Emma."

"No, Dad."

Her voice was stronger than before.

"I already lost Mom once."

She looked at Lily.

"I'm not standing here while we lose you too."

The words stopped me.

Because she wasn't the frightened girl outside the kitchen door anymore.

She had changed.

All of us had.

Lily stepped forward.

She grabbed my hand.

"Dad."

I looked down.

She was scared.

But she was still standing.

"I remember."

I crouched.

"What?"

She looked toward the hallway.

"Mom said..."

She swallowed.

"Mom said the family has to stay together."

My heart tightened.

Three years.

Three years without her voice.

And now every word from her felt like a message from Elena.

I stood.

"Okay."

Everyone looked at me.

"We go together."

Claire immediately nodded.

Marcus checked his weapon.

Thomas looked uncertain.

But he followed.

Even my father.

I looked at him.

"Why are you coming?"

He looked at me.

"Because this is my family too."

I almost laughed.

Almost.

But I didn't.

Because for the first time...

I wondered if he truly believed that.

We moved through the mansion.

Every hallway felt different.

This was the place where my children grew up.

The place where Elena laughed.

The place where I thought we were safe.

Now it felt like a battlefield.

The message led us to the old dining room.

The room where my family used to gather.

The room where my father used to sit at the head of the table.

The door was closed.

Marcus moved forward.

"I'll open it."

I stopped him.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"I do it."

I placed my hand on the handle.

For years, I believed the most dangerous moments of my life happened outside.

Meetings.

Rival organizations.

Enemies with weapons.

I was wrong.

The most dangerous place had always been my own home.

I opened the door.

Elena was inside.

Alive.

Real.

Standing only a few feet away from me.

For a second...

I forgot how to breathe.

She looked exactly like the memory I carried.

But different.

Tired.

Stronger.

Older.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Daniel."

My name.

The way she said it.

That was enough.

I almost ran to her.

Almost.

Then I saw the person beside her.

My mother.

She lowered the weapon slightly.

"Son."

I froze.

I wanted to believe.

I wanted to run to both of them.

But I couldn't.

Not anymore.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

"What is this?"

Elena looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice broke.

"Not yet."

She looked hurt.

But she nodded.

"You deserve answers."

"Three years."

Tears appeared in her eyes.

"I know."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had no choice."

"You let Lily believe she lost you."

"I know."

My anger cracked.

Because the woman in front of me wasn't a stranger.

She was the person I loved.

The person I lost.

"Why?"

Elena looked toward my mother.

Then my father.

Then me.

"Because someone was trying to destroy you."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone says that."

She stepped closer.

"I know."

Her voice became softer.

"Because everyone was protecting pieces of the truth."

She looked at Lily.

"I'm sorry."

Lily stared.

Then slowly walked forward.

Nobody stopped her.

Elena fell to her knees.

And Lily ran into her arms.

For three years...

My daughter had not hugged her mother.

For three years...

She carried that pain alone.

Watching them together almost broke me.

Emma started crying.

Claire looked away.

Even Thomas couldn't hide his emotion.

Then Elena whispered something into Lily's ear.

Lily's expression changed.

She looked afraid.

I noticed immediately.

"What did you tell her?"

Elena looked at me.

"The truth."

"What truth?"

Elena stood slowly.

"The night I disappeared wasn't the night everything started."

I frowned.

"Then when?"

She looked at my father.

"The night your father decided he wanted control."

My father stepped forward.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

His expression was different.

Angry.

Elena looked at him.

"You should have stayed hidden."

My father laughed.

"You always thought you were smarter than everyone."

"No."

Elena shook her head.

"I just knew you better than anyone."

The room went silent.

My father looked at her.

"You betrayed me."

Elena stared.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"You betrayed our family."

I looked between them.

"What happened?"

Elena took a breath.

"Your father didn't fake his death."

I frowned.

"What?"

She looked at my mother.

"My mother-in-law did."

Everyone froze.

I looked at my mother.

She didn't deny it.

"She helped him disappear."

My mother looked at me.

"Because I knew what he was becoming."

The room went silent.

My father looked furious.

"You don't understand."

My mother shook her head.

"No."

She looked at me.

"Your father wanted power."

She pointed toward the documents.

"He wanted control over everything."

Then she looked at Elena.

"And when Elena discovered the truth..."

She paused.

My chest tightened.

"What?"

My mother whispered:

"She wasn't the only one who was supposed to disappear."

The lights suddenly went out.

Again.

But this time...

Nobody panicked.

Because everyone knew.

Someone else was inside.

A sound came from the hallway.

Slow footsteps.

Approaching.

Elena grabbed my arm.

Her face turned pale.

"Daniel."

I looked at her.

"Who is it?"

She didn't answer.

She only whispered:

"The person who started all of this."

The door behind us slowly opened.

May you like

And a voice from the darkness said my name.

"Brother."
