Chapter 5 - The Secret Claire Hid For Three Years

The photo was still in my hand.

My old office.

My old desk.

My wife's wedding ring.

And the person sitting there waiting for me.

I stared at the image until every detail burned into my memory.

The angle of the camera.

The position of the chair.

The small lamp Elena always kept on the corner of my desk.

Everything was exactly the same.

Except one thing.

Someone was sitting in my office wearing the ring I watched them bury.

I looked at Claire.

"Tell me everything."

My voice was different now.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Controlled.

The same voice I used when negotiating with people who wanted to destroy me.

But Claire knew me well enough to understand.

The calmer I became...

The more dangerous the situation was.

She slowly sat down.

The injury in her leg had already soaked through the cloth.

Emma moved toward her.

"Claire, you need medical help."

Claire shook her head.

"Not until he knows the truth."

I looked at her.

"Three years."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Three years you knew my wife was alive."

"Yes."

"You watched me bury an empty coffin."

Claire looked away.

"Yes."

The answer hurt more than an excuse would have.

Because there was no attempt to defend herself.

No lie.

No denial.

Only guilt.

"Lily stopped speaking because she saw something that night."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"And you knew."

"Yes."

I took a breath.

Trying to keep control.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Elena made me promise."

The room went silent.

Even Thomas looked surprised.

"Elena asked you to hide this from me?"

Claire nodded.

"She told me if anything happened to her, I could not trust anyone."

I looked at Thomas.

"Not even me?"

Thomas didn't answer.

That was the first time I wanted to hit him.

Because Thomas was my closest friend.

But he was also part of this.

Everyone was.

Everyone except me.

"Why?"

I asked.

Claire looked at Lily.

"Because someone inside your organization had already gotten close enough to destroy your family."

I looked back at her.

"Who?"

"We didn't know."

"Three years and you didn't know?"

Claire lowered her head.

"We knew pieces."

"Tell me the pieces."

She took a slow breath.

"Elena discovered financial transfers hidden inside your company accounts."

I frowned.

"My company has thousands of transactions."

"These were different."

"How?"

"They weren't stealing money."

That caught my attention.

"Then what?"

Claire looked at me.

"They were buying silence."

Nobody spoke.

"Silence from who?"

Claire's eyes moved toward Lily.

"People who saw what happened."

My stomach tightened.

"What happened the night Elena died?"

Claire looked at Thomas.

He nodded slowly.

Like he knew this moment would come.

"Three years ago, Elena found out someone was using your organization to move illegal information."

I stared.

"Information about what?"

"Your security."

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Someone had been collecting information about my family.

Our routines.

Our weaknesses.

Our home.

I looked around the kitchen.

The hidden passage.

The cameras.

The locked doors.

Someone had been studying us.

"Who was Elena going to expose?"

Claire whispered.

"The person closest to you."

I waited.

She didn't continue.

"Who?"

Claire looked at me.

"She never told me the name."

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Because after everything, I was still chasing shadows.

"Then what did she tell you?"

Claire reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small object.

A necklace.

My wife's necklace.

The one I thought disappeared after the accident.

My expression changed.

"Where did you get that?"

"Elena gave it to me."

My hand reached for it.

But Claire didn't let go.

"Before I give this to you, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"Elena didn't fake her death because she wanted to leave you."

I froze.

"Then why?"

"Because she wanted to keep you alive."

The words hit me.

I remembered the last week before the accident.

Elena acting differently.

Checking her phone.

Looking over her shoulder.

Waking up in the middle of the night.

I thought she was afraid.

I thought she was hiding something from me.

Maybe she was trying to protect me.

Claire finally handed me the necklace.

Inside the pendant was a tiny storage device.

I looked at Thomas.

"How long has this existed?"

"Three years."

"And you never opened it?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Elena told us only you could see it."

I stared at the small pendant.

My wife had left me a message.

A message she knew I might never receive.

I connected the device to my laptop.

The screen opened.

One video file appeared.

No title.

No date.

Just one word.

"Daniel."

My hands stopped.

Because Elena had recorded it herself.

I pressed play.

Her face appeared.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

Scared.

But alive.

My breath disappeared.

"Daniel..."

Her voice.

After three years.

Her actual voice.

Emma covered her mouth.

Lily moved closer to the screen.

And I couldn't move.

"If you're watching this, it means I failed to come back."

A tear rolled down Emma's face.

Elena continued.

"But it also means Claire kept her promise."

I looked at Claire.

She was crying silently.

"Daniel, I need you to listen carefully."

The video shook slightly.

Like she had recorded it while hiding.

"The person who caused this is not outside your organization."

I leaned closer.

"He is already inside."

A pause.

Then Elena looked directly into the camera.

"He's someone you trust."

The video stopped.

Not ended.

Stopped.

I checked the file.

Corrupted.

Only thirty seconds.

Only enough to confirm my worst fear.

Someone close to me had destroyed my family.

But not enough to tell me who.

I closed the laptop.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily touched my arm.

"Dad."

I looked at her.

She pointed at the screen.

At Elena's frozen face.

Then she whispered:

"Mom was scared of him."

My heart tightened.

"Who?"

Lily looked toward the door.

Not the hidden passage.

The kitchen door.

The same door where she had been locked earlier.

The same door Claire had been protecting.

She whispered a name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made Thomas immediately reach for his weapon.

May you like

Because the person Lily was afraid of...

Was already standing inside my mansion.
