Chapter 7 - The Evidence Hidden Beneath The Mansion

The video froze on the final frame.
Marcus.
Standing outside Elena's bedroom.
Three years ago.
The night my wife disappeared.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody breathed.
I stared at the screen.
My mind refused to process what my eyes had just seen.
Because there were only two possibilities.
Either Marcus was the person who destroyed my family.
Or someone wanted me to believe he was.
And after everything I had learned that night...
I no longer trusted what was placed in front of me.
I slowly lowered the phone.
"Marcus."
He didn't answer.
That was enough.
"Look at me."
He did.
His face was pale.
But not guilty.
Terrified.
"Explain."
Marcus swallowed.
"I was there."
Emma stepped back.
"You were there?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Yes."
Her eyes filled with anger.
"On the night my mother died?"
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The room became heavier.
I looked at Claire.
She already knew.
"You knew he was there too."
Claire nodded.
"I knew."
My anger returned.
"Everyone knew."
"No."
Claire shook her head.
"Not everyone."
"Then who?"
Nobody answered.
That was becoming a pattern I hated.
I walked toward Marcus.
"You entered my wife's room."
"Yes."
"You touched her things."
"Yes."
"You were the last person recorded near her."
"Yes."
"Then why shouldn't I believe you killed her?"
Marcus looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him...
He looked hurt.
Not offended.
Hurt.
"Because I was trying to save her."
The words stopped me.
"What?"
Marcus looked at Thomas.
Then Claire.
Then finally me.
"I was following Elena's instructions."
My eyes narrowed.
"Elena told you to go there?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Three days before the accident."
The room went silent.
"Why?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Because she knew someone was watching her."
I looked at Lily.
My daughter was holding onto Emma now.
Listening.
Remembering.
"Tell me what happened that night."
Marcus took a slow breath.
"I arrived at the house at 11:42 PM."
"Why?"
"Elena sent me a message."
"What message?"
Marcus looked at his phone.
Then stopped.
"It was deleted."
"Convenient."
"I know."
His honesty made it worse.
He continued.
"The message only said one thing."
"What?"
Marcus looked at me.
"Protect Lily."
My chest tightened.
I looked at my daughter.
The words from three years ago suddenly became clearer.
Elena wasn't protecting herself.
She was protecting our child.
"What happened after you arrived?"
Marcus looked down.
"I entered through the east entrance."
"The security door?"
"Yes."
"Nobody stopped you?"
He shook his head.
"Because someone disabled the cameras."
I looked toward the security system.
The same weakness.
The same seven-minute gap Claire discovered.
Marcus continued.
"When I reached Elena's room, she was alive."
Nobody moved.
Emma covered her mouth.
"Alive?"
Marcus nodded.
"She was injured."
My heart sank.
"How?"
"She had been attacked."
"By who?"
Marcus looked at me.
"I didn't see the person."
I almost laughed.
"Of course."
But Marcus didn't react.
"Because I wasn't the first person there."
My expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
"The attacker left before I arrived."
"How do you know?"
"Because Elena was still conscious."
He paused.
"And she told me who she believed it was."
My fingers tightened.
"Who?"
Marcus looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"She said it was someone inside your family circle."
The words felt familiar.
Everyone had been saying the same thing.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Someone inside.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Marcus looked away.
"Because Elena made me promise."
"Another promise."
His jaw tightened.
"She said if I told you too soon, they would know she survived."
I froze.
"She survived."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
"Then where did she go?"
His silence answered.
I stepped closer.
"Where did my wife go?"
Marcus looked at Claire.
Claire whispered:
"She was taken away."
My eyes moved to her.
"By who?"
Claire shook her head.
"We don't know."
"No."
I looked at both of them.
"You know something."
Nobody spoke.
I slammed my hand onto the counter.
"Three years."
My voice echoed through the kitchen.
"Three years I thought my wife died."
The room went quiet.
"Three years I watched my daughter disappear into silence."
I looked at Claire.
"Three years you watched me destroy myself."
Tears appeared in Claire's eyes.
"I'm sorry."
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice became colder.
"I don't need apologies."
I looked at everyone.
"I need the truth."
Thomas stepped forward.
"Daniel."
I turned.
"Before you make a decision, there is something you need to see."
He walked toward the hidden passage.
The same passage where he had appeared.
The same passage someone used to enter my house.
"There is a room beneath this mansion."
I frowned.
"What?"
Thomas looked at me.
"Elena found it."
Marcus nodded.
"She discovered it while investigating the security breaches."
I stared at the wall.
"My mansion has a hidden room?"
"Not just a room."
Thomas touched the old mechanism.
"A vault."
The panel opened.
A narrow staircase appeared.
Cold air came from below.
Nobody spoke.
I looked down into the darkness.
"Who built this?"
Thomas answered quietly.
"The previous owner."
"And why didn't I know about it?"
"Because someone erased it from the property records."
My expression changed.
Someone had altered the records before I bought the house.
Someone wanted this place hidden.
I grabbed a flashlight.
"I go first."
Thomas nodded.
Marcus followed.
Claire tried to stand.
I stopped her.
"You're injured."
"I need to see this."
"Why?"
She looked at me.
"Because Elena left something there for you."
The words made me stop.
For a moment, I saw my wife again.
The woman who always planned ten steps ahead.
The woman who knew secrets were dangerous.
The woman who knew she might not survive.
We walked down the stairs.
The underground room was larger than expected.
Shelves lined the walls.
Old documents.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Files.
Everything hidden beneath my own home.
I moved toward the nearest table.
A folder sat there.
My name was written on it.
Daniel.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Dates.
Photos.
Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.
A list of people.
People inside my organization.
People who had received payments.
People who had helped cover up Elena's disappearance.
At the bottom of the page was one final name.
The person controlling everything.
I stared.
Because I knew that name.
Everyone in the room knew that name.
Then Claire found another envelope.
She picked it up.
Her hands started shaking.
"Daniel..."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She turned it over.
On the front was Elena's handwriting.
But this time...
The message was not for me.
It was for Lily.
Claire slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of Elena holding Lily as a baby.
And written on the back were five words.
"Your father must never know."
Claire flipped the photo over.
And beneath Elena's message was another sentence.
A sentence written by someone else.
May you like
Someone who had entered the hidden room after Elena.
"Because Daniel was the reason she disappeared."
