Chapter 8 - My Daughter’s Forgotten Memory

The sentence on the photograph stayed in my mind.
"Because Daniel was the reason she disappeared."
I read it again.
Then again.
But the words did not change.
My name was still there.
My accusation was still there.
And the worst part...
A small part of me wondered if it could be true.
Not because I believed I hurt Elena.
Never.
But because I had spent three years believing I knew everything about my own life.
And every single thing I believed had been wrong.
The hidden room.
Thomas being alive.
Elena surviving.
Marcus hiding the truth.
Claire protecting my daughter.
The enemy inside my organization.
All of it had been happening while I was standing in the middle of it.
I looked at Claire.
"Who wrote this?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not."
Her voice broke.
"Daniel, I swear."
I looked at the photograph again.
Elena holding Lily.
A happy moment.
A moment before everything fell apart.
"Why would Elena write that I couldn't know?"
Claire was silent.
Thomas stepped closer.
"Maybe because she didn't trust what you would do."
I turned toward him.
That answer hurt.
Because Thomas knew me.
He knew exactly what I was capable of when someone threatened my family.
"If Elena believed I was dangerous..."
I looked at him.
"Why did she leave Lily with me?"
Nobody answered.
Because there was no easy answer.
I looked at my daughter.
Lily stood quietly near the stairs.
Watching.
Listening.
Remembering.
"Lily."
Her eyes lifted.
I crouched down.
"Do you remember this room?"
She looked around.
Then slowly nodded.
My heart tightened.
"You've been here before?"
Another nod.
Emma stepped closer.
"What?"
Lily looked afraid.
Not of us.
Of the memory.
I softened my voice.
"When?"
She looked at Claire.
Claire immediately understood.
"The night Elena disappeared."
The words made the room colder.
I looked at Lily.
"You came here that night?"
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Then she whispered:
"Mom brought me."
Three words.
But they destroyed me.
Because for three years I believed Lily was traumatized because she witnessed something horrible.
I never considered that Elena might have brought her somewhere.
That Elena might have been trying to save her.
"What happened here?"
Lily looked at the photograph.
Then pointed toward the shelves.
"There was a box."
I followed her finger.
A small wooden box sat behind several old files.
I picked it up.
It was locked.
No key.
No combination.
Only one symbol carved into the top.
A symbol I recognized.
My family crest.
But there was something different.
A small line crossing through it.
Thomas looked at the box.
"That's not your symbol."
I looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
He pointed.
"Your family crest represents protection."
His finger moved to the line.
"This one represents betrayal."
I stared at the box.
Someone had taken my symbol.
And changed its meaning.
I forced the lock open.
Inside was a stack of letters.
The first one had Elena's handwriting.
My hands became unsteady.
I opened it.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect our family.
I stopped.
My vision blurred.
I continued.
Do not trust what you remember about the night I disappeared.
Your memories were designed to hurt you.
I looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
I kept reading.
The person behind this knows your weaknesses better than anyone.
Because he studied you.
He studied us.
And he used your love for me against you.
I turned the page.
The next sentence made my blood run cold.
The accident was not an accident.
Emma gasped.
"No..."
Claire covered her mouth.
I kept reading.
But Elena's writing became more rushed.
I don't have enough time.
If Lily remembers, listen to her.
She saw the truth.
Not the truth they wanted her to see.
The real truth.
And Daniel...
If you ever think you are the reason this happened...
Remember one thing.
The person who wanted you to believe that is the person who caused it.
The letter ended there.
No signature.
No goodbye.
Just a final sentence written at the bottom.
"Find the person who was with you when I died."
I lowered the paper.
My mind went through every detail of that night.
The meeting.
The phone call.
The drive home.
The accident.
The people around me.
Then I stopped.
Because there was one person.
One person who had been there.
One person who had always been part of the story.
"Thomas."
He looked at me.
"What?"
"You said you weren't at the accident."
"I wasn't."
"Then who was?"
Thomas became quiet.
Too quiet.
I looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
Claire closed her eyes.
Someone knew.
Someone had always known.
I turned back to Lily.
"Who was with Mom?"
Her small hands began shaking.
She looked terrified.
I lowered myself.
"You don't have to say anything if you're scared."
She looked at me.
Then whispered:
"Mom told me not to forget."
My heart broke.
"Forget what?"
She looked toward the photograph.
"His face."
The room became silent.
"Whose face, Lily?"
She squeezed her fingers together.
"The man who was with Mommy."
I waited.
Then she said:
"The man who looked like you."
Nobody moved.
My entire body froze.
"What?"
Lily started crying.
"He had Daddy's clothes."
My breathing slowed.
"He had Daddy's voice."
The words felt impossible.
"He told Mommy..."
She stopped.
I held her hand.
"What did he tell her?"
Lily looked at me.
And the fear in her eyes was the same fear she had carried for three years.
"He told Mommy that you already knew."
The room went silent.
"That I knew what?"
Lily shook her head.
"I don't know."
She looked toward the hidden passage.
"But Mommy said he was lying."
A sound suddenly came from above.
Everyone turned.
The underground room's security monitor flickered on.
Nobody touched it.
The screen showed the mansion hallway.
A live camera feed.
Someone was walking through my house.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like they owned it.
Marcus immediately recognized the person.
His face changed.
"No."
I looked at him.
"Who is that?"
Marcus didn't answer.
The figure stopped in front of the camera.
Then looked directly into the lens.
As if they knew we were watching.
The screen zoomed in.
And the person removed their coat.
Revealing the face we had all been searching for.
The face Lily had remembered.
The face Elena feared.
May you like
The face of the man who was supposed to have died three years ago...
My own brother was standing in my mansion.
