Chapter 8 - The Deal That Changed Everything

The man walking toward the restaurant was the person my father believed had died five years ago.

Marcus Vale.

I didn’t know his name.

But everyone else did.

My father’s face told me enough.

The fear.

The disbelief.

The anger.

All of it appeared at once.

"Impossible."

My father whispered the word.

Nobody heard it except me.

Because everyone was staring at the man who had just entered.

Marcus didn’t look like a ghost.

He looked like someone who had been waiting.

Waiting for this exact moment.

He wore a dark gray suit.

No expression.

No hesitation.

Just confidence.

The kind of confidence that came from knowing secrets nobody else knew.

Adrian immediately stepped in front of me.

Again.

A wall.

A shield.

But this time, I noticed something different.

He wasn’t protecting me from Marcus.

He was protecting Marcus from reaching me.

And that scared me.

"Adrian."

My voice was quiet.

He didn’t look back.

"Stay behind me."

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because after everything I had learned tonight, I was tired of being told where to stand.

"I’m not a child."

Adrian finally looked at me.

"I know."

"Then stop treating me like one."

For a moment, something changed in his eyes.

Not anger.

Understanding.

He stepped aside.

Just slightly.

Giving me the choice.

That small action mattered more than he knew.

Marcus stopped several feet away.

His eyes moved across the room.

My father.

Adrian.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Then me.

When his eyes landed on me, his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Like he had known me long before tonight.

"Elena Brooks."

Hearing my full name from a stranger felt wrong.

I stared at him.

"Who are you?"

Marcus looked at my father.

"You never told her."

My father’s jaw tightened.

"Leave."

Marcus smiled.

"Still trying to protect her."

I stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

I looked at my father.

"No more."

My voice shook.

But I didn’t stop.

"I want answers."

Marcus studied me.

Then nodded.

"Good."

He looked around the restaurant.

"Because you are finally ready."

Daniel suddenly spoke.

"This is a mistake."

Marcus turned toward him.

And smiled.

A cold smile.

"Daniel Hayes."

Daniel froze.

Marcus knew his name.

"You look exactly like your father."

Daniel’s expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus ignored him.

He looked back at me.

"Your entire life was built on a lie."

I almost smiled.

"That’s becoming a common sentence tonight."

Nobody laughed.

Because it was true.

Marcus walked closer.

My father stepped forward.

"Don’t come near her."

Marcus stopped.

"You don’t get to order me anymore, Richard."

The way he said my father’s name was different.

Not respectful.

Not friendly.

Like someone who had been waiting years to say it.

I looked at my father.

"What happened between you two?"

My father didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

"We were partners."

I looked at him.

"Partners?"

He nodded.

"Before your father betrayed me."

My father’s face hardened.

"That’s not what happened."

Marcus smiled.

"Of course you would say that."

Adrian finally spoke.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked at him.

"Still loyal."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

"Don’t make this about me."

Marcus laughed softly.

"But it is about you."

A strange silence followed.

I looked at Adrian.

"What does he mean?"

Marcus answered.

"He never told you?"

I felt my chest tighten.

Not again.

Another secret.

Another missing piece.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

"Tell her."

Adrian didn’t move.

I whispered:

"Tell me what?"

The silence was painful.

Then Adrian finally spoke.

"When your father disappeared, I was assigned to find him."

I stared.

"Assigned?"

He nodded.

"By someone who wanted him found."

"And?"

His eyes moved toward Marcus.

"I found him."

My heart sank.

The words from my father returned.

He was the one who found me first.

I looked at Marcus.

Then Adrian.

"What happened after that?"

Adrian was quiet.

Too quiet.

My father answered.

"He saved me."

Marcus laughed.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"He saved you because he needed something from you."

Adrian’s expression changed.

A warning.

Marcus continued.

"He needed the location of the account."

My stomach tightened.

"The account?"

The same one Jonathan mentioned.

The one connected to my inheritance.

Marcus looked at me.

"Your father hid something that everyone wanted."

"What?"

He stared at me.

"The original ownership records of Brooks-Hayes Holdings."

I frowned.

"But the company was sold."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

My breath caught.

"What do you mean?"

"The company was stolen."

The words hit differently.

Because I had spent years believing my father failed.

Believing his legacy disappeared because of mistakes.

But now everyone was telling me something else.

Someone took it.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"And your husband helped."

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Don’t listen to him."

Marcus smiled.

"Still lying."

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"You’re going to let him say this?"

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because maybe he already knew.

Victoria moved closer.

"Elena."

I looked at her.

She looked terrified.

"I need to tell you something."

"What?"

She swallowed.

"Daniel wasn’t the person who planned your divorce."

The room became silent.

I stared.

"What?"

She looked at Marcus.

Then my father.

Then me.

"He was following orders."

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

"Whose orders?"

Nobody answered.

Then Marcus said:

"Mine."

Everything stopped.

Daniel looked at him.

"You’re lying."

Marcus didn’t react.

"I told you to marry her."

My hands went cold.

I looked at Daniel.

The man I loved.

The man I trusted.

The man who destroyed my life.

"Why?"

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time...

He looked ashamed.

Not guilty.

Ashamed.

"I was supposed to get access."

My heart broke.

"Access to what?"

Daniel didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

"To you."

The room went silent.

My entire body felt numb.

"You married me..."

My voice cracked.

"...because of my father?"

Daniel looked away.

That was the answer.

I stepped back.

And somehow, Adrian was suddenly the only person who looked as shocked as I felt.

Because maybe even he didn’t know everything.

Marcus walked toward the table.

He placed a small box down.

Old.

Wooden.

Damaged.

My father immediately recognized it.

"No."

Marcus smiled.

"Yes."

I looked at the box.

"What is that?"

My father’s face became pale.

"Elena."

His voice changed.

Like he was begging me.

"Don’t open it."

I stared at him.

After everything.

After five years.

After all the lies.

The first honest emotion I saw from him was fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

I reached toward the box.

My fingers touched the lock.

Marcus watched silently.

Daniel looked terrified.

Victoria closed her eyes.

Adrian whispered:

"Elena, wait."

But it was too late.

The lock clicked open.

Inside was a single photograph.

I picked it up.

And my blood turned cold.

Because the person standing beside my father in the picture...

Was me.

But I was a child.

And written on the back of the photograph were four words:

"She was never yours."

Then my phone suddenly vibrated.

A new message appeared.

From an unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

"Ask your father who your real mother was."
