Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Hidden In The Family

The screen went black.
And behind me, someone unlocked the restaurant door.
Nobody turned.
Not immediately.
Because everyone was still frozen by the words my mother had spoken.
Adrian Moretti is not the man you think he is.
He was the one who betrayed us.
I stared at Adrian.
Waiting.
For anger.
For an explanation.
For anything.
But he said nothing.
And somehow, that silence hurt more than the accusation.
Because Adrian had always been the man with answers.
The man who knew what others didn’t.
The man who walked into my humiliation and turned it into his battle.
But now...
He looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.
The door behind us opened completely.
A man stepped inside.
Everyone reacted.
Except me.
Because I was too focused on Adrian.
Too focused on the question burning in my mind.
Had he been protecting me?
Or had he been controlling me?
The man who entered cleared his throat.
"Elena."
I turned.
And my heart stopped again.
It was an older man.
Someone I didn’t recognize.
But my father did.
His face changed instantly.
"No."
The man smiled sadly.
"Hello, Richard."
My father stepped back.
Like he had seen another ghost.
Marcus looked at the man.
Then at my father.
And whispered:
"Leon."
The name meant something.
Everyone knew it.
Everyone except me.
I looked around.
"Who is he?"
Nobody answered.
Of course.
Nobody answered.
Because apparently every person in my life had a secret room inside their heart, and I was never allowed to enter.
The older man looked at me.
His eyes softened.
"You look like your mother."
My chest tightened.
Another person mentioning her.
Another person who knew her.
Another person who had pieces of my life that I didn’t.
"Who are you?"
He took a slow breath.
"My name is Leon Carter."
I waited.
Nothing.
The name meant nothing.
Until my father spoke.
"You were supposed to be dead."
Leon looked at him.
"So were you."
Silence.
Adrian moved slightly.
Not toward Leon.
Toward me.
Like he was preparing for something.
I noticed.
And I hated that I noticed.
Because even when I was angry with him...
Some part of me still looked for him.
Still trusted him.
I looked away.
"What is happening?"
My voice cracked.
"I want someone to tell me the truth."
Leon looked at me.
"Then you need to know everything."
He glanced at Adrian.
"Especially about him."
My heart sank.
Again.
Always him.
Always Adrian.
I looked at Adrian.
"Did you betray my parents?"
The question was simple.
The answer should have been simple.
But his face told me it wasn’t.
"I didn’t betray them."
My eyes narrowed.
"But my mother said—"
"Your mother believed I did."
The words stopped me.
Believed.
Not knew.
Not saw.
Believed.
Adrian stepped closer.
"My job was to protect your father."
Leon laughed quietly.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"Your job was to protect the information."
Adrian’s expression hardened.
"Careful."
Leon smiled.
"Still the same."
I looked between them.
"What information?"
Nobody answered.
Then my father did.
"The account."
I turned.
"The same account everyone keeps mentioning?"
He nodded.
"It contains the original ownership records of the company."
I frowned.
"But why does everyone care so much?"
My father looked at me.
"Because your name is on them."
The words hit me.
"My name?"
He nodded.
"The company was always supposed to belong to you."
I stared.
"But I never owned anything."
Marcus spoke.
"Because Daniel’s family changed the documents."
Daniel immediately reacted.
"You have no proof."
Marcus looked at him.
"We do."
Daniel’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Adrian noticed too.
He turned toward Daniel.
"What are you hiding?"
Daniel laughed.
But it sounded forced.
"Nothing."
Nobody believed him.
Not anymore.
I looked at Daniel.
The man I had loved.
The man I had trusted.
The man who sat across from me tonight and tried to humiliate me.
"Was anything real?"
He looked at me.
"Elena..."
"Answer."
His eyes filled with something.
Regret.
"I loved you."
I almost believed him.
Almost.
Then I remembered the documents.
The lies.
The years.
"You loved me while you destroyed me?"
He looked away.
And that was the answer.
Victoria quietly spoke.
"There’s something you need to know about Daniel."
Daniel turned.
"Don’t."
She ignored him.
"He didn’t start this."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"He was recruited."
My stomach tightened.
"By who?"
Victoria looked at Marcus.
Then Leon.
Then my father.
Finally, she said:
"By your grandfather."
The room went silent.
My grandfather.
A man who had been dead for fifteen years.
"No."
My father closed his eyes.
"Elena..."
"No."
I stepped back.
"My entire family is dead."
Leon looked at me.
"That’s what you were told."
The sentence destroyed me.
Because I realized something.
My whole life had been built on things I was told.
Not things I knew.
Not things I saw.
Things people decided to give me.
I looked at Adrian.
"You knew about my grandfather?"
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I laughed softly.
A broken sound.
"Of course you did."
His face changed.
"Elena."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You don’t get to say my name like that."
Everyone went quiet.
Because even Adrian Moretti had limits.
And I had just reached one.
"I trusted you."
His expression softened.
"I know."
"No, you don’t."
I looked at him.
"You knew the truth about my family."
"I knew pieces."
"You knew enough."
Silence.
The worst kind.
The kind that confirmed everything.
Adrian looked down.
For the first time, he looked defeated.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
I froze.
"What?"
He looked at me.
"The people who destroyed your family are still looking for you."
A chill went through me.
"Why?"
He answered quietly.
"Because your mother left you something."
I frowned.
"What?"
Adrian looked toward the old wooden box.
The one Marcus brought.
"The reason everyone has been searching for you."
He paused.
"The reason your father disappeared."
My heartbeat increased.
"What did she leave me?"
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then my father whispered:
"Your mother’s final confession."
The box.
I looked at it.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like it was something alive.
I walked toward the table.
Nobody stopped me.
Not even Adrian.
I opened the wooden box.
Inside was a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Not typed.
Handwritten.
By my mother.
My fingers trembled.
I opened it.
Inside was one page.
Only one.
The first line made my breath disappear.
"Elena, if you are reading this, it means the man you trust most has already lied to you."
I stopped.
My eyes moved lower.
The next sentence was written beneath.
And it named him.
Adrian Moretti.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Adrian included.
Then my phone suddenly vibrated.
A new message appeared.
A photo.
Attached.
I opened it.
And my blood went cold.
Because the picture showed Adrian standing beside my mother the night she disappeared.
May you like
And in Adrian’s hand...
Was the same gun found beside the scene where everyone believed she died.
