Chapter 15 - The Seat Beside Me Forever

The screen displayed the name of the person who was supposed to receive it.

And everyone in the room went pale when they saw it.

The name was not mine.

It was not Richard Brooks.

It was not Adrian Moretti.

It was:

"Alexander Moretti."

Adrian’s father.

The man everyone believed was dead.

The man who had been at the center of every secret.

Every betrayal.

Every broken promise.

I stared at the screen.

Then at Adrian.

"Your father?"

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The video was not meant for me.

It was meant for him.

My mother had left one final message.

Not for her daughter.

For the son of the man who destroyed everything.

The screen flickered.

Then my mother appeared again.

Her face was tired.

But her eyes were strong.

"Adrian."

My heart tightened.

Hearing her say his name felt strange.

Like she had known him longer than I ever did.

"I know you will see this eventually."

Adrian stood completely still.

My mother continued.

"I know you believe your father’s actions define you."

A small silence.

"But they don’t."

Adrian’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Pain.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

"Your father was responsible for many terrible things."

Everyone looked at Adrian.

But he didn’t look away.

"He hurt people."

She paused.

"He hurt my family."

My father lowered his head.

"But you are not him."

The words seemed to hit Adrian harder than any accusation.

Because maybe he had spent his whole life believing he was.

My mother continued.

"You helped me escape."

I froze.

Adrian closed his eyes.

The room became silent.

"You saved my life that night."

I looked at Adrian.

My mother’s voice became softer.

"But you made one mistake."

The video paused for a moment.

"You carried his guilt."

Adrian looked away.

And suddenly everything became clear.

The distance.

The coldness.

The way he always acted like he deserved punishment.

He wasn’t protecting everyone from himself.

He was punishing himself.

The video continued.

"Elena."

My attention returned.

"My daughter."

Tears filled my eyes.

"If you are watching this, then you finally know the truth."

She smiled sadly.

"I’m sorry you had to learn it this way."

I touched the screen.

A small, impossible wish.

Like somehow I could reach her.

"Richard raised you."

My father looked up.

"He made mistakes."

His eyes filled.

"But he loved you."

I looked at him.

And for the first time that night, I saw the father I remembered.

Not the man who lied.

Not the man who hid.

The man who carried regret every day.

"My blood does not decide who your family is."

My mother’s voice became stronger.

"Your choices do."

The video ended.

The room stayed silent.

No one moved.

Then the countdown on the device reached zero.

Everyone tensed.

But nothing happened.

No explosion.

No alarm.

No chaos.

The screen simply changed.

One final file appeared.

"Release Complete."

Marcus looked confused.

"What?"

Adrian walked toward the device.

He opened the file.

Inside were documents.

Thousands of pages.

Proof.

Evidence.

Names.

Transactions.

Everything.

But there was one difference.

The files were not designed to destroy innocent people.

They were organized.

Carefully.

Prepared.

My mother hadn’t created a weapon.

She created a way to expose the truth.

Without becoming like the people she fought.

Marcus stepped forward.

"This is impossible."

Adrian looked at him.

"No."

He closed the file.

"This is what you were afraid of."

Marcus’s face changed.

Because he finally understood.

The account was never about power.

It was about ending it.

Daniel looked at the documents.

Then at me.

"I’m sorry."

I looked at him.

The man who broke my heart.

The man who changed my life.

The man who once knew every dream I had.

For a moment, I remembered who he used to be.

But memories were not enough.

"I believe you are sorry."

His eyes lifted.

"But that doesn’t erase what you did."

He nodded.

Because he knew.

And maybe that was the first honest thing he had given me.

Victoria stepped closer.

"I should have told you sooner."

I looked at her.

"Yes."

She accepted it.

"I was afraid."

I nodded.

"So was I."

Because everyone had been afraid.

But fear was never an excuse to destroy someone else’s life.

Marcus tried to move toward the door.

He didn’t get far.

The restaurant doors opened.

Authorities entered.

Not because Adrian called them.

Because the files had already been released.

The truth was no longer something one person could hide.

Marcus looked at Adrian.

"You think you won?"

Adrian looked at him calmly.

"No."

A pause.

"I think she did."

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I understood.

Adrian never wanted the power.

He wanted me to have my life back.

Marcus was taken away.

Daniel left quietly.

Not forgiven.

Not hated.

Just part of my past.

Jonathan Pierce later admitted everything.

The forged documents.

The altered will.

The manipulation.

The lies.

The truth came out slowly.

Painfully.

But it came out.

And for the first time in years...

I wasn’t afraid of it.

Six months later, I stood inside the old Brooks-Hayes building.

The same building everyone had fought over.

The same place that had caused so much pain.

But now it was different.

The company had been rebuilt.

Not as an empire.

Not as a weapon.

As something my mother would have been proud of.

A place built on honesty.

Richard stood beside me.

He was older.

Quieter.

But he was there.

"I never deserved you forgiving me."

I looked at him.

"I’m not forgetting."

He nodded.

"I know."

"But I’m choosing to move forward."

A tear slipped down his face.

And for once...

I let him cry.

Some wounds didn’t disappear.

They simply stopped controlling you.

That evening, I returned to Bellavita.

The same restaurant.

The same place where everything started.

The empty chair was still there.

The same kind of table.

The same chandelier.

But this time...

I wasn’t alone.

Adrian stood beside me.

No guards.

No secrets.

No shadows.

Just him.

"You came back."

I smiled.

"You said I was never meant to sit alone."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"I remember."

He pulled out the chair.

The same gesture.

The same respect.

But this time, it wasn’t because I needed saving.

It was because I chose him.

I sat down.

Adrian took the seat across from me.

The chair that had once represented humiliation.

Now represented something else.

A beginning.

"You know," I said softly, "when I first met you, I thought you were the most dangerous man in the room."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"And now?"

I looked at him.

"Now I think you were the only honest one."

He smiled slightly.

"That’s a dangerous thing to say about me."

I laughed.

A real laugh.

The first one in a long time.

Outside, the city continued moving.

People continued living.

And for the first time, I wasn’t chasing answers.

I wasn’t running from the past.

I wasn’t trying to prove I deserved a place at the table.

I already had one.

May you like

And this time...

The chair across from me was never empty.
