Chapter 4 - The Woman My Ex Tried To Destroy

The restaurant doors opened.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the man standing there was impossible.

At least, that was what my mind kept repeating.

Impossible.

My father had been dead for five years.

I had watched the funeral.

I had held the documents.

I had signed the papers.

I had stood beside his grave and said goodbye.

But Adrian Moretti was looking at me like he had just seen a ghost.

And he had whispered:

"Elena... your father is alive."

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand the words.

Not because I didn’t hear them.

Because I did.

Every single word.

And my brain refused to accept them.

Daniel was the first person to react.

"No."

One word.

Too fast.

Too certain.

I turned toward him.

His face had lost all color.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

That was when I knew.

Whatever Adrian had just said...

Daniel already knew.

I slowly looked back at Adrian.

"Tell me you’re wrong."

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

That was the worst part.

A lie would have been easier.

A simple denial.

A comforting sentence.

Anything.

But Adrian Moretti didn’t give comfort he couldn’t guarantee.

Finally, he said:

"I wish I was."

The room felt smaller.

The lights felt brighter.

The sound of people breathing around us became impossible to ignore.

Victoria looked down.

Like she had been carrying this secret for too long.

I stared at her.

"You knew?"

She didn’t speak.

That was enough.

My chest tightened.

"Everyone knew."

Nobody corrected me.

Nobody defended themselves.

And somehow, that hurt more.

I picked up the black drive from the table.

My fingers trembled.

"What is on this?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Everything."

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

"Everything about my father being alive?"

She nodded.

"Everything about Daniel."

My eyes moved toward my ex-husband.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Elena, listen to me."

I raised my hand.

And for the first time in years, he stopped.

Not because he respected me.

Because he was afraid.

"I listened to you for years."

My voice became steadier.

"I listened when you said the company was failing."

Daniel looked away.

"I listened when you said you needed space."

Silence.

"I listened when you said our marriage ending was my fault."

His jaw tightened.

"But I never once heard the truth."

Daniel’s expression changed.

For a moment, I saw regret.

Then it disappeared.

"You don’t understand what your father did."

The words hit me.

Not because they surprised me.

Because they confirmed something.

There was a story I had never been told.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"You’re still blaming her father?"

Daniel looked back.

"He destroyed everything."

Adrian’s expression turned colder.

"No."

He stepped closer.

"You destroyed everything."

Nobody challenged him.

Because everyone knew.

Daniel looked at me.

"You really trust him?"

I looked at Adrian.

That question was complicated.

Because I didn’t know him.

Not completely.

I knew the rumors.

The stories.

The warnings.

But I also knew one thing.

When everyone else watched me fall...

Adrian walked toward me.

"I don’t know if I trust him," I said quietly.

Daniel smiled.

"Finally."

I continued.

"But I know I don’t trust you."

The smile disappeared.

The silence afterward felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

Adrian looked at me.

Not proud.

Not satisfied.

Just watching.

Like he understood this wasn’t about him.

It was about me finding my own voice again.

Victoria slowly opened her purse.

"There’s something you need to see."

She removed an old photograph.

A real photograph.

Not a copy.

Not a digital file.

An actual photograph.

She placed it on the table.

I looked down.

And my heart stopped.

It was my father.

Younger.

Alive.

Standing beside a man I recognized immediately.

Daniel’s father.

My hands went cold.

"What is this?"

Victoria swallowed.

"Your fathers were partners."

I looked at her.

"Partners?"

She nodded.

"Before everything happened."

Adrian sat down again.

His voice was quiet.

"Your father and Daniel’s father built Brooks-Hayes Holdings together."

I stared at the picture.

My entire childhood.

My entire understanding of my family.

Everything shifted.

"But my father’s company failed."

Adrian looked at me.

"That’s what they wanted you to believe."

The words made my stomach turn.

"They?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

Daniel.

His family.

The people who benefited from my father disappearing.

I looked at Daniel.

"You stole my company."

His expression hardened.

"I saved it."

"No."

My voice cracked.

"You took it."

Daniel stepped closer.

"You have no idea what your father left behind."

I stared at him.

"Then tell me."

He didn’t.

That silence was his answer.

Adrian reached into the folder.

He removed another document.

This one was older.

The paper looked worn.

"This is your father’s final agreement."

I looked at the signature.

My father’s handwriting.

My eyes burned.

"He wrote this?"

Adrian nodded.

"He knew something was wrong."

I looked up.

"What kind of something?"

Adrian hesitated.

And that scared me.

Because Adrian Moretti was not a man who hesitated.

"He knew someone close to him was betraying him."

The restaurant suddenly felt too quiet again.

My eyes moved slowly around the table.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Adrian.

Everyone connected.

Everyone hiding something.

Except me.

I was the only person who had been left in the dark.

I opened the drive.

A small laptop was placed on the table.

Adrian connected it.

The screen turned on.

A folder appeared.

One folder.

One name.

"Elena."

My breathing stopped.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Photos.

Documents.

Videos.

Messages.

My entire life.

Recorded.

Tracked.

Watched.

For years.

I looked at Adrian.

"Who collected all this?"

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t need to.

A new file appeared automatically.

The date was from three days ago.

The day I received the invitation to Bellavita.

The file name was simple.

"Operation Elena Brooks."

My blood ran cold.

Daniel stood suddenly.

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"You knew about this."

Daniel’s silence confirmed it.

I stared at him.

"You knew someone was watching me?"

Daniel looked desperate now.

"Elena, you don’t understand."

I almost smiled.

Because those words again.

The same words.

The same excuse.

But before I could answer, the laptop screen changed.

A video started playing.

A man appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My father.

My hand covered my mouth.

Because he looked directly into the camera.

And said my name.

"Elena... if you’re watching this, it means they finally found you."

The video paused.

Then another message appeared on the screen.

One sentence.

One warning.

"Do not trust the man sitting beside you."

I slowly turned.

Because there was only one person sitting beside me.

Adrian Moretti.

May you like

And before I could ask why...

The restaurant lights suddenly went out.
