Chapter 11 - The Last Move Against The Mafia King

The picture was still on my phone.
Adrian Moretti.
My mother.
A gun.
The night she disappeared.
I stared at the screen until my eyes started burning.
Because I wanted to be angry.
I wanted to hate him.
It would have been easier.
But the hardest part was that my heart still remembered the man who held my hand when everyone else watched me fall.
The man who told me I was never meant to sit alone.
The man who looked at me like I mattered.
And now I was staring at proof that he might have been the reason my family was destroyed.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
Adrian was watching me.
Not defending himself.
Not running.
Just waiting.
"Say something."
My voice was quiet.
The entire restaurant went silent.
Adrian looked at the phone in my hand.
Then back at me.
"I can explain."
I laughed softly.
A painful sound.
"Everyone says that."
His expression changed.
Because he knew exactly what I meant.
Daniel.
My father.
Everyone.
Everyone had explanations.
Nobody had the truth.
I placed the phone on the table.
"Was it you?"
Adrian didn’t answer.
My heart sank.
Because silence was becoming his favorite answer.
"Adrian."
His eyes finally met mine.
"No."
One word.
But this time, I needed more.
"Then tell me what happened."
He looked at the picture again.
Then at my father.
Then at me.
"The picture is real."
The words cut deeper than I expected.
My father closed his eyes.
Victoria looked away.
Marcus stayed silent.
Only Adrian continued.
"But what you think happened..."
He paused.
"Didn’t."
I stared at him.
"Then what happened?"
Adrian took a breath.
For the first time since I met him, he looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
"Your mother was alive when I arrived."
My fingers tightened.
"Arrived where?"
"The location where she disappeared."
The restaurant disappeared around me.
All I could hear was his voice.
"I was sent there because someone was trying to find her."
"Who?"
He looked at Marcus.
Then Leon.
Then Daniel.
"There were multiple people looking for her."
I shook my head.
"No."
I stepped back.
"You’re avoiding the question."
Adrian looked at me.
"I found her."
My breath stopped.
"You found my mother."
He nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why did you have a gun?"
The silence returned.
Adrian didn’t move.
Finally, he said:
"Because I wasn’t the only person there."
My father stepped forward.
"Elena."
I looked at him.
"Did you know?"
He looked broken.
"I knew Adrian found her."
"But you didn’t tell me."
"No."
"Why?"
My father looked away.
"Because your mother made me promise."
I froze.
"She made you promise?"
He nodded.
"She told me if anything happened, I had to keep you away from everyone involved."
I looked around.
Everyone involved.
That was everyone.
My entire life was surrounded by people who knew more than me.
Adrian moved closer.
"Your mother was trying to protect you."
I looked at him.
"By disappearing?"
His face tightened.
"By surviving."
That answer stopped me.
Because maybe that was the truth.
Maybe everyone had been trying to survive.
But I had been the one left behind.
Marcus suddenly spoke.
"Enough."
Everyone looked at him.
He walked toward the table.
"You are wasting time."
Adrian turned.
"What do you want?"
Marcus smiled.
"The same thing I wanted five years ago."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
"The account."
Marcus nodded.
"The account."
My father immediately reacted.
"No."
Marcus looked at him.
"You know what happens if Elena opens it."
I looked between them.
"What happens?"
Nobody answered.
I was done.
I grabbed the wooden box.
"What happens?"
My voice was louder.
Everyone stopped.
I looked at all of them.
"I am tired of being the secret."
Nobody moved.
"I am tired of people fighting over my life while I stand here trying to understand what happened to me."
I opened the envelope again.
My mother’s letter.
The handwriting I had never seen before.
The words she left behind.
I read the next line.
And everything changed.
"Elena, trust the person who makes you angry, not the person who makes you comfortable."
I looked up.
Everyone looked confused.
Except Adrian.
His face changed.
Because he understood.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at him.
"Adrian?"
He didn’t speak.
Then my father whispered:
"Your mother was warning you about someone."
"Who?"
My father looked at Daniel.
The entire room turned.
Daniel froze.
"No."
Victoria stepped back.
Daniel looked around.
"You think it’s me?"
Nobody spoke.
But their silence answered.
Daniel laughed.
A nervous laugh.
"You’re all wrong."
Adrian moved closer.
"Then prove it."
Daniel stared at him.
"You really think you’re better?"
Adrian’s expression stayed cold.
"Yes."
Daniel smiled.
"That’s your problem."
He reached into his jacket.
Everyone reacted.
Adrian moved instantly.
But Daniel wasn’t reaching for a weapon.
He pulled out a small device.
A flash drive.
Another one.
He placed it on the table.
"You want the truth?"
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at me.
"Fine."
My heart raced.
"What is that?"
"The reason your mother disappeared."
Adrian’s face changed.
"No."
Daniel smiled.
"Yes."
He looked at me.
"Your mother didn’t disappear because of the company."
My fingers went cold.
"Then why?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"Because she discovered what Adrian Moretti really was."
The room froze.
Adrian’s eyes became dangerous.
"Don’t."
Daniel ignored him.
He placed the drive beside the box.
"Watch it."
I stared at the device.
A part of me didn’t want to.
Because every truth I discovered destroyed something.
But another part of me knew.
I had spent my entire life afraid of answers.
No more.
I picked up the drive.
Adrian’s voice stopped me.
"Elena."
I looked at him.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
Not for himself.
For me.
"Don’t watch it here."
"Why?"
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I connected the drive.
The screen turned on.
A video appeared.
My mother.
Alive.
Sitting in a dark room.
Her eyes were full of fear.
But she was looking directly at the camera.
Directly at me.
"Elena."
I covered my mouth.
My mother continued.
"If you are watching this, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth."
The video shook slightly.
Then she whispered:
"There is one person you must never forgive."
The screen flickered.
Everyone leaned closer.
My mother looked terrified.
Then she said:
"Because he was the one who ordered my death."
The video stopped.
A final frame appeared.
A document.
A signature.
A name.
May you like
My blood turned cold.
Because the signature at the bottom belonged to the one person everyone had trusted most...
