Chapter 1 - The Chair That Was Never Empty

I was holding my untouched wine glass when my ex-husband pulled out the empty chair across from me and said: "Looks like nobody was coming after all."

I calmly placed my glass down and smiled.

The restaurant went silent when the most feared man in Boston walked toward my table carrying a black leather folder.

Inside that folder was a reservation card with my name written on it.

But underneath my name was another name I never expected to see.

The chair was never empty.

Twenty-seven minutes.

That was how long I had been sitting alone beneath the golden glow of the chandelier at Bellavita, one of Boston’s most expensive restaurants.

Twenty-seven minutes of watching couples laugh.

Twenty-seven minutes of pretending I wasn’t hearing the whispers.

Twenty-seven minutes of telling myself I didn’t care.

But I did.

Because everyone in that room knew exactly why I was there.

Elena Brooks.

The woman whose husband left her two months after their divorce became public.

The woman whose career had been destroyed by rumors.

The woman who had supposedly been abandoned by the only person who promised he would never leave.

And tonight was supposed to prove everyone wrong.

I had dressed carefully.

Not because I wanted attention.

Because I refused to look broken.

My deep burgundy dress was simple but elegant. My hair fell over my shoulders. My necklace was the only thing I kept from my grandmother.

A small reminder that I was still myself.

Even when the world wanted me to become someone smaller.

Across from me sat an empty chair.

That chair had been reserved for someone who was supposed to arrive.

Someone who had promised me he would come.

Someone who had texted me three hours earlier.

"Tonight changes everything."

I believed him.

That was my first mistake.

The second mistake was thinking my ex-husband, Daniel Hayes, had already taken everything he could from me.

I was wrong.

The sound of expensive shoes approaching my table pulled me away from my thoughts.

I looked up.

Daniel stood there.

Perfect suit.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

The same smile that once made me believe I was the luckiest woman alive.

Now it only made me feel tired.

"Elena."

His voice carried just enough volume for the nearby tables to hear.

Like he wanted an audience.

I looked at him.

"Daniel."

He glanced at the empty chair.

Then at me.

Then he laughed softly.

Not warmly.

Cruelly.

"Still waiting?"

I didn’t answer.

He slowly pulled out the chair.

The same chair I had been looking at for twenty-seven minutes.

The same chair that represented a promise.

He sat down.

A few people nearby turned their heads.

Daniel leaned back comfortably.

Like he belonged there.

Like he had won something.

"Looks like nobody was coming after all."

The words landed exactly where he wanted them to.

A year ago, they would have destroyed me.

A year ago, I would have cried.

A year ago, I would have asked why he enjoyed hurting me.

But after everything Daniel had done, something inside me had changed.

I simply looked at him.

"You came here to embarrass me."

He smiled.

"No."

He picked up the wine menu.

"I came here because I knew you would be alone."

I studied his face.

The confidence.

The arrogance.

The belief that he still controlled my emotions.

"You don’t know anything about me anymore."

For a moment, his smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

Then it returned.

"Really?"

He leaned closer.

"Everyone knows you’re waiting for some mysterious man who promised to save you."

My fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the table.

Because he knew.

Daniel knew someone was coming.

But he didn’t know who.

Nobody did.

The reservation had been made under a private name.

The invitation had arrived three days earlier.

No explanation.

Only one sentence.

"Meet me at Bellavita. I owe you the truth."

I had almost ignored it.

Almost.

Then I saw the signature.

A name I had only heard whispered in Boston’s darkest conversations.

Adrian Moretti.

The man who owned half the city’s underground empire.

The man politicians avoided.

The man businessmen feared.

The man who had never asked anyone for forgiveness.

And somehow…

He wanted to meet me.

Daniel noticed my silence.

"You really believed someone like that would show up for you?"

My eyes lifted.

"What do you mean?"

His smile widened.

"I know who you’re waiting for."

The room suddenly felt colder.

I stared at him.

"How?"

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his jacket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

It was the same type of envelope Adrian Moretti’s assistant had used.

"What is that?"

Daniel tapped it with one finger.

"Proof."

I didn’t touch it.

"Proof of what?"

He looked around, enjoying every second.

"That the man you think is coming here tonight never intended to meet you."

My stomach tightened.

I wanted to believe he was lying.

I needed him to be lying.

Because Daniel had spent months trying to destroy my confidence.

But the envelope was real.

And Daniel looked too confident.

"You always were easy to fool, Elena."

I stared at him.

Then something happened.

The entire restaurant changed.

Not because someone shouted.

Not because someone moved.

Because every person near the entrance suddenly stood still.

Daniel noticed too.

His expression changed.

Slowly.

The arrogance disappeared.

I turned around.

A tall man stood at the restaurant entrance.

Black suit.

Calm expression.

Cold eyes.

Every person in the room knew who he was.

Adrian Moretti.

He wasn’t angry.

That was what scared people.

Anger was predictable.

Calm was dangerous.

His eyes moved through the restaurant.

Past the tables.

Past the guests.

Until they stopped.

On the empty chair.

The chair Daniel was sitting in.

Adrian walked forward.

One step.

Then another.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stood halfway from his seat.

"Mr. Moretti."

Adrian ignored him.

His attention stayed on me.

Then the chair.

Then Daniel.

And in the silence of the restaurant, Adrian spoke.

"Move."

Daniel forced a laugh.

"Excuse me?"

Adrian placed a black leather folder on the table.

The same folder from the entrance.

Then he looked directly at him.

"That’s my seat."

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he finally understood.

The empty chair was never waiting for him.

May you like

It was waiting for Adrian Moretti.

And inside the folder was something that would destroy Daniel’s entire life...
