Chapter 13 - The Fall Of The Man Who Humiliated Her

The video froze.

The room froze with it.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the face on the screen belonged to the one person who had spent the entire night pretending he wanted to protect me.

Daniel Hayes.

My ex-husband.

The man who sat across from me and smiled while I waited alone.

The man who told me nobody was coming.

The man who made me feel abandoned.

And now...

The man standing in the center of my family’s biggest secret.

I stared at the screen.

Unable to process what I was seeing.

"No."

Daniel whispered the word.

Not because he was innocent.

Because he knew.

Everyone looked at him.

Even the people who had defended him.

Even the people who had believed his lies.

Victoria took a step back.

"Daniel..."

Her voice was full of disappointment.

Not surprise.

That hurt more.

Because she knew.

She knew something.

Daniel looked around the room.

Searching for someone to save him.

Nobody did.

Then his eyes landed on me.

"Elena."

I looked at him.

And for the first time in years...

I didn’t see my husband.

I saw a stranger.

"How long?"

My voice was quiet.

Daniel swallowed.

"Elena—"

"How long did you know?"

He looked away.

That was enough.

My heart broke.

Not because I was surprised.

Because some part of me had still hoped I was wrong.

That somewhere under all the betrayal...

There was still the man I loved.

But there wasn’t.

"There was never a marriage."

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

Daniel looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

"There was a mission."

His silence confirmed it.

My father closed his eyes.

Adrian watched Daniel carefully.

Marcus looked almost satisfied.

Because the truth he had been waiting years to reveal was finally standing in front of everyone.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Listen to me."

I laughed softly.

"Why?"

His expression changed.

"Because I did love you."

The words would have destroyed me months ago.

Maybe even days ago.

But tonight had changed me.

I had watched too many people use love as an excuse.

"You loved me?"

I stared at him.

"You married me because of my father."

Daniel shook his head.

"It started that way."

My chest tightened.

"It started?"

He looked desperate.

"I didn’t expect to care about you."

Nobody spoke.

Daniel continued.

"You weren’t supposed to be part of the plan."

The plan.

That word.

I hated it.

Because it reminded me that my life had been a strategy to someone.

A piece on a board.

A door to something valuable.

"What was the plan?"

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was when I understood.

Daniel wasn’t the person in control.

He never was.

He was just another person being used.

"You were supposed to get access to the account."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"And then?"

His face changed.

"Then I was supposed to make sure you never found out what was inside."

The room became silent.

My hands clenched.

"Meaning?"

Daniel looked at me.

"I was supposed to destroy the evidence."

My breath stopped.

"The evidence that could expose everyone."

My father looked away.

Victoria covered her face.

Adrian’s expression became colder.

Because now everything connected.

Daniel wasn’t just trying to steal my inheritance.

He was trying to erase my family’s last chance at the truth.

I looked at him.

"Why didn’t you?"

A painful silence followed.

Daniel looked down.

"Because I fell in love with you."

I stared.

And for a moment...

Just a moment...

I remembered the good times.

The man who held my hand.

The man who made me laugh.

The man who promised forever.

Then I remembered tonight.

The chair.

The humiliation.

The lies.

"Love doesn’t look like this."

My voice cracked.

Daniel looked like he wanted to answer.

But he couldn’t.

Because he knew.

He had no defense.

Adrian stepped closer.

"Who ordered you?"

Daniel looked at him.

"No."

Adrian’s voice became colder.

"Who?"

Daniel stayed silent.

Marcus moved toward him.

"Tell her."

Daniel looked at Marcus.

Fear appeared again.

The same fear he showed every time Marcus spoke.

That was when I realized.

Daniel wasn’t afraid of Adrian.

He wasn’t afraid of my father.

He was afraid of Marcus.

"Marcus."

My voice was quiet.

Everyone looked at me.

"You were behind this."

Marcus smiled.

"Smart girl."

Adrian immediately moved.

But Marcus raised his hand.

"Careful."

Two men appeared near the entrance.

Security.

Armed.

The restaurant changed instantly.

The balance shifted.

Adrian noticed.

So did everyone else.

Marcus looked around.

"Everyone wanted the account."

He looked at me.

"But nobody understood one thing."

I stared at him.

"What?"

He smiled.

"The account was never the prize."

My stomach tightened.

"Then what was?"

He looked directly at me.

"You."

Silence.

I felt cold.

"What?"

Marcus stepped closer.

"Your mother knew the account was useless without you."

I looked at my father.

He looked devastated.

Marcus continued.

"Your grandfather created a final condition."

My heartbeat increased.

"What condition?"

Marcus smiled.

"Only Elena Brooks could unlock everything."

The room went silent.

Adrian looked at me.

"That’s why they kept you alive."

The words made me sick.

Not because they were surprising.

Because they explained everything.

The marriage.

The company.

The secrets.

Everyone had been protecting something.

Or using something.

And that something was me.

I stepped back.

"I’m not a key."

Nobody answered.

Because they knew.

That was exactly what they had turned me into.

Marcus reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small device.

"The final piece."

Adrian’s expression changed.

"Don’t."

Marcus smiled.

"You’re too late."

He placed the device on the table.

A small screen appeared.

A countdown.

10:00.

My heart dropped.

"What is that?"

Marcus looked at me.

"The reason your mother disappeared."

The countdown started.

09:59.

09:58.

Adrian looked at the device.

"Everyone leave."

Nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

Whatever was about to happen was bigger than all of us.

Marcus smiled.

"You still think you can save her."

Adrian looked at him.

"I will."

Marcus laughed.

"That’s exactly what you said five years ago."

My eyes moved toward Adrian.

"What happened five years ago?"

Adrian didn’t answer.

The countdown continued.

09:30.

09:29.

Then the device screen changed.

A video appeared.

A woman’s face.

My mother.

But this time...

She wasn’t afraid.

She looked angry.

She looked determined.

And she looked directly at Adrian.

"Adrian."

He froze.

My mother continued:

"If you are watching this, then you failed your promise."

Adrian’s face changed.

A promise.

My mother had made Adrian promise something.

Something nobody knew.

The video continued.

"Tell Elena the truth."

The room went silent.

My mother looked at the camera.

And said:

"Tell her who her real father is."

I stopped breathing.

Because my father was standing right beside me.

And then the video revealed a second man in the background.

A man I had never seen before.

But Adrian recognized him instantly.

May you like

His face turned pale.

Because the man in the video was the person Adrian had spent his entire life trying to destroy...
