Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Knew My Secret

The restaurant door opened.

And the woman standing there was the last person I expected to see.

My fingers went cold.

Because I knew her.

Not personally.

But I knew her face.

Everyone did.

She was the woman whose name had appeared in the middle of my divorce papers.

The woman Daniel had claimed was "just a business partner."

The woman I was told I was imagining.

Victoria Hale.

She walked into Bellavita wearing a black silk dress, her expression calm, almost amused.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

Like she knew exactly what she would find.

Daniel stepped backward.

"Victoria."

Her eyes moved toward him.

Then toward Adrian.

Then finally toward me.

And when she looked at me, I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Regret.

Adrian noticed my reaction.

"Elena."

His voice was quiet.

I didn’t look away from Victoria.

"How does she know about this?"

Nobody answered.

And that silence told me more than words could.

Victoria walked closer.

Every step echoed against the marble floor.

The entire restaurant watched.

But she didn’t care.

She stopped beside our table.

"Daniel."

Her voice was cold.

"You told me she would never find out."

Daniel’s face changed.

"What are you doing here?"

Victoria laughed softly.

"Cleaning up your mistakes."

The words hung in the air.

I looked at Daniel.

"What mistakes?"

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For years, Daniel had always had an answer.

A perfect explanation.

A reason.

A story.

But tonight, he had nothing.

Adrian pulled the empty chair beside me.

Not the chair Daniel had taken.

A different one.

Then he sat down.

Calm.

Watching.

Like he already knew this conversation would change everything.

Victoria looked at Adrian.

"You really came."

Adrian’s expression remained unreadable.

"You knew I would."

A strange silence passed between them.

That was when I realized something.

They knew each other.

Not casually.

Not from business meetings.

There was history there.

A history nobody had told me about.

I turned toward Adrian.

"You know her?"

He didn’t answer immediately.

That pause hurt more than the answer.

"Yes."

One word.

But it carried too much.

Victoria looked at me.

"I’m sorry."

I almost laughed.

Sorry.

That word had become meaningless.

Everyone was sorry after they caused damage.

Everyone apologized after the fire was already burning.

"You should explain why you’re here."

My voice surprised me.

It sounded stronger than I felt.

Victoria nodded slowly.

"I came because Daniel made a mistake."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

"Careful."

She ignored him.

"He thought he could control everyone."

She placed a small envelope on the table.

My heart sank.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life being handed to me by someone else.

I stared at it.

"What is that?"

Victoria looked at Daniel.

"The truth about why he left you."

The restaurant suddenly felt too quiet.

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

"Elena, don’t."

Don’t.

Not an explanation.

Not a denial.

Just don’t.

And somehow that was worse.

Adrian slowly pushed the envelope toward me.

"Open it."

I looked at him.

"You already know what’s inside."

He didn’t deny it.

"Yes."

"Then why didn’t you tell me?"

His eyes softened.

"Because I wanted you to hear it from the person who helped create it."

I turned back to Victoria.

My hands touched the envelope.

But I didn’t open it yet.

Because a part of me was afraid.

Not of the truth.

Of how much the truth could change.

I had spent months trying to understand why my marriage ended.

Why Daniel suddenly became distant.

Why the man who once held my hand in front of everyone began acting like I was a burden.

I blamed myself.

I replayed every conversation.

Every argument.

Every moment where I wondered what I had done wrong.

But maybe the answer had never been me.

Victoria sat down.

For the first time, she looked less powerful.

Less untouchable.

"I never wanted this to happen."

Daniel immediately turned.

"Don’t pretend you’re innocent."

Victoria looked at him.

"And don’t pretend you didn’t use me."

The words hit harder than anything else.

I looked between them.

"Use you?"

Victoria’s eyes dropped.

"He told me he was leaving you because he loved me."

My stomach tightened.

"He said your marriage was already over."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Victoria."

But she continued.

"He said you knew."

My fingers froze.

Because I didn’t.

I knew nothing.

I knew a man who came home later.

A man who stopped asking about my day.

A man who stopped looking at me.

But I never knew there was someone else.

Victoria looked at me.

"I believed him."

A bitter smile crossed her face.

"That was my mistake."

Daniel’s face turned angry.

"You’re really doing this?"

Adrian finally spoke.

"She’s doing what you were too afraid to do."

Daniel looked at him.

"And what exactly is that?"

"Tell the truth."

The room became silent again.

Daniel looked at me.

And for one second, I saw the man I married.

The man before everything changed.

Then it disappeared.

"Elena, you don’t understand."

I stood.

That sentence again.

The same sentence everyone used when they wanted to hide something.

"I understand enough."

My voice shook.

But I continued.

"I understand that everyone in this room knew something except me."

Nobody spoke.

That hurt the most.

Not the betrayal.

Not the lies.

The silence.

Adrian stood beside me.

Not touching me.

Not claiming me.

Just standing there.

A choice.

Support without control.

Something I had forgotten existed.

Daniel noticed.

And his expression darkened.

"You think he’s saving you?"

I looked at him.

"No."

I answered before Adrian could.

"Because I don’t need saving."

Daniel stared at me.

For the first time, he looked unsure.

Victoria slowly stood.

"There’s something else."

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked at Adrian.

Not Daniel.

Adrian.

That made my heart race.

"What?"

Victoria hesitated.

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small black drive.

And placed it on the table.

"This is why Daniel is afraid."

Daniel immediately moved.

Too fast.

Adrian reacted faster.

He grabbed Daniel’s wrist before he could reach it.

The entire restaurant froze.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"You have no idea what you’re getting involved in."

Adrian’s grip tightened slightly.

"I know exactly."

Victoria looked at me.

"Elena, before you watch what’s on that drive, you need to know something."

I stared at her.

"What?"

Her voice became quieter.

"The divorce was never about another woman."

A chill went through me.

"Then what was it about?"

Victoria looked at Daniel.

Then Adrian.

Then back at me.

"It was about what your father left you."

My breath stopped.

My father.

A man who died five years ago.

A man whose company disappeared after his death.

A man whose final documents had been declared missing.

I looked at Daniel.

And he looked terrified.

Because he knew exactly what she meant.

Adrian’s phone suddenly vibrated.

He checked the screen.

The color left his face.

"What is it?"

I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He looked toward the restaurant entrance.

Then at me.

Then he whispered one name.

A name I hadn’t heard in five years.

May you like

"Elena... your father is alive."

And behind Adrian, the restaurant doors slowly opened...
