Chapter 6 - The Night The Truth Started Bleeding

The man lifted his hand slowly.

Pointing behind Adrian.

And said:

"Don’t trust him. He was the one who found me first."

The world stopped.

Not dramatically.

Not like in movies.

Just silently.

Like every sound around me had disappeared.

My father was standing ten feet away.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

And the first thing he did after returning to my life was warn me about the man who had protected me all night.

Adrian Moretti.

I looked between them.

My father.

The man I thought I lost.

The man who saved me.

The man who lied to me.

I didn’t know who was who anymore.

Adrian didn’t move.

That scared me.

Because Adrian was always in control.

Always prepared.

But now...

He looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.

"Richard."

Adrian said the name quietly.

My father’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

"You still remember my name."

The words were directed at Adrian.

Not me.

That hurt.

Because I was standing there.

His daughter.

The person who had spent five years believing he was gone.

And yet they were looking at each other like they had unfinished business.

I stepped forward.

My voice broke.

"Dad."

The man looked at me.

And everything changed.

For the first time that night, the powerful people around me disappeared.

No Adrian.

No Daniel.

No Victoria.

Just me.

And the father I had buried.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Elena."

Hearing my name from him almost destroyed me.

I wanted to run to him.

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to ask why.

Why did he let me mourn?

Why did he let me believe he abandoned me?

Why did he let me spend years blaming myself?

Instead, I stood there.

Frozen.

"Why?"

One word.

That was all I could say.

My father lowered his eyes.

Because he knew exactly what I meant.

"Why did you leave me?"

The question hung between us.

Nobody interrupted.

Not even Adrian.

My father looked older suddenly.

Not because of his age.

Because of the weight he carried.

"I didn’t leave you."

My eyes burned.

"You disappeared."

He nodded slowly.

"I know."

"Do you know what that did to me?"

His face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

"I know."

"No, you don’t."

My voice became louder.

"You don’t know what it feels like to stand beside a grave and say goodbye to someone who wasn’t even there."

The restaurant was silent.

Even Daniel looked away.

My father took a step forward.

But Adrian moved slightly.

Not blocking him.

Protecting me.

My father noticed.

And his expression hardened.

"Still doing that?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Doing what?"

"Standing between people and the truth."

The words confused me.

I looked at Adrian.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

Another silence.

I was tired of silence.

"TELL ME."

My voice echoed.

My father closed his eyes.

Then he looked at Daniel.

And everything changed.

"You married his daughter."

Daniel froze.

I looked at him.

"What?"

My father’s eyes became cold.

"Daniel knew."

The air disappeared from my lungs.

"Knew what?"

My father looked at me.

"Knew who I was hiding from."

Daniel immediately stepped back.

"Richard, don’t."

My father laughed quietly.

A sad sound.

"After everything, you still think you can threaten me."

Daniel’s face turned pale.

I looked at him.

"You knew my father was alive?"

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My hands started shaking.

"You knew."

Daniel looked desperate.

"Elena, listen."

"No."

I stepped away.

"Not this time."

My father watched me.

And I saw something in his eyes.

Regret.

Because he knew Daniel had hurt me.

And he knew he was part of why.

Adrian finally spoke.

"Richard, tell her the truth."

My father looked at him.

"You don’t get to ask me that."

Adrian’s expression tightened.

"She deserves to know."

My father smiled bitterly.

"Funny."

A pause.

"The man who helped hide my daughter’s enemy is saying she deserves the truth."

My body went cold.

I turned toward Adrian.

"Helped hide?"

Adrian looked at me.

"Elena—"

"No."

My voice was quieter now.

"Answer."

Adrian didn’t look away.

"Years ago, I helped your father disappear."

The confession landed harder than anything.

My father closed his eyes.

Daniel smiled.

Because he finally had something.

"Now you understand."

I looked at Adrian.

"Why?"

His jaw tightened.

"Because your father asked me."

My father nodded.

"He saved my life."

I looked between them.

"I don’t understand."

My father walked toward the table.

Slowly.

Like every step hurt.

"Five years ago, I discovered Daniel’s father had been stealing from my company."

Daniel’s expression changed.

"My father?"

My father nodded.

"Yes."

The pieces started moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

"Your father and Daniel were working together."

Daniel shook his head.

"That’s impossible."

My father looked at him.

"Is it?"

The confidence disappeared from Daniel’s face.

My father continued.

"When I found the evidence, they realized I couldn’t be controlled."

He looked at me.

"So they tried to remove me."

My breathing stopped.

"Remove you?"

He nodded.

"They wanted everyone to believe I died."

The room became silent.

"Adrian helped me escape."

I looked at Adrian.

"Then why did he hide it from me?"

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question everyone avoided.

Adrian finally spoke.

"Because your father made me promise."

I turned.

"Dad?"

My father looked ashamed.

"I thought keeping you away from this world would protect you."

I laughed softly.

A broken laugh.

"Protect me?"

I looked around.

"Everyone lied to me."

Nobody moved.

"I lost my father."

My voice shook.

"I lost my marriage."

I looked at Daniel.

"And I spent years thinking I was the problem."

Daniel opened his mouth.

But I stopped him.

"No."

He became silent.

Because this time, I wasn’t asking.

My father reached into his coat.

He removed a small envelope.

"I kept one thing from you."

I stared.

"What?"

He placed it on the table.

"Your mother’s final letter."

I froze.

My mother.

A person I had lost before I was old enough to understand loss.

"My mother wrote this?"

He nodded.

"She knew everything."

My fingers moved toward the envelope.

But before I touched it, Daniel suddenly grabbed his phone.

He looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

Adrian noticed.

"What happened?"

Daniel didn’t answer.

He slowly turned the phone around.

There was a message.

From an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

Everyone in the room saw it.

Everyone understood it.

Because the message contained a name.

A name that should have been impossible.

My father looked at the screen.

And whispered:

"No."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He didn’t respond.

His eyes were fixed on the phone.

Then Adrian reached for his own weapon.

The first time I had ever seen him do it.

Because whoever sent that message was not a threat.

It was a warning.

The message appeared again.

One line.

One name.

"Elena Brooks."

Then below it:

"I know where your real father is."

My blood went cold.

May you like

Because my father was standing right in front of me.

And then the restaurant door opened behind us...
