Chapter 5 - The Mafia Boss's Unexpected Promise

The restaurant lights went out.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Three seconds was enough time for fear to enter the room.

I heard chairs moving.

A glass breaking somewhere behind me.

Someone whispered.

Someone else gasped.

But the only thing I could hear clearly was my own heartbeat.

Because the last thing I saw before darkness swallowed everything was Adrian Moretti standing beside me.

And the last thing I heard was my father’s voice coming from the frozen laptop screen.

"Do not trust the man sitting beside you."

Then everything disappeared.

A hand grabbed my arm.

I froze.

But before I could react, a familiar voice reached my ear.

"Elena. It’s me."

Adrian.

His voice.

Calm.

Steady.

Not panicked.

I should have pulled away.

A man like Adrian Moretti was supposed to scare me.

But in that moment, surrounded by darkness and strangers, he was the only person who made me feel like I wasn’t alone.

The emergency lights slowly turned on.

The restaurant changed.

The warm golden atmosphere was gone.

Now every face looked suspicious.

Every shadow looked dangerous.

Adrian released my arm immediately.

Like he was reminding me that he would never hold me against my will.

Daniel noticed.

And I saw something flash across his face.

Jealousy.

Not because he cared.

Because he hated losing control.

"Everyone stay where you are."

Adrian’s voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

People listened.

Two men in black suits appeared near the entrance.

Security.

No.

Something more.

The way they moved told me they weren’t ordinary guards.

Victoria stepped closer to me.

"Elena, you need to leave."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

Her eyes moved toward the laptop.

"Because someone wanted you to see that message."

I stared at the screen.

The video had stopped.

My father’s face was frozen there.

Alive.

Looking directly at me.

"I don’t understand."

Victoria lowered her voice.

"You weren’t supposed to find out this way."

"Then how was I supposed to find out?"

She didn’t answer.

Again.

Another secret.

Another person deciding what I could handle.

I was tired of it.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

I stood straighter.

"No more."

My voice shook.

But I continued.

"I spent years being the last person to know what was happening in my own life."

I looked at Daniel.

"My marriage."

Then Victoria.

"My father."

Then Adrian.

"Even this."

The room became silent.

"I’m done being protected from the truth."

Adrian watched me.

And for a moment, I expected him to argue.

To tell me it was too dangerous.

To tell me he knew better.

Instead, he nodded.

"Okay."

That surprised me.

"Okay?"

He stepped closer.

"But you need to understand something."

His eyes were serious.

"The truth you’re asking for will hurt."

I looked at him.

"I already know what it feels like to hurt."

A small silence passed.

Then Adrian said:

"Then I’ll make sure you never face it alone."

The words were simple.

But they stayed with me.

Because nobody had said that to me in a long time.

Not without wanting something in return.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Is that your plan?"

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"Make her believe you’re the good guy?"

Adrian didn’t react.

"You don’t know me."

Daniel smiled.

"Actually, I know you better than she does."

My stomach tightened.

Adrian’s expression changed slightly.

A warning.

But Daniel continued.

"You think she knows what kind of man you are?"

He looked at me.

"Tell her."

I looked at Adrian.

"What does he mean?"

Silence.

The silence lasted too long.

And I hated it.

Because it meant there was something else.

Something Adrian had not told me.

Daniel smiled.

"There it is."

He pointed between us.

"The great Adrian Moretti."

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

"You should stop talking."

"Why?"

Daniel laughed.

"Because she might realize the person who saved her tonight is the same person who destroyed her family."

My breath stopped.

I looked at Adrian.

"What?"

Nobody spoke.

Daniel enjoyed the moment.

Of course he did.

He had always loved watching me doubt myself.

"Ask him."

I didn’t look away from Adrian.

"Is it true?"

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

And that was enough to hurt.

"Adrian."

His eyes met mine.

"My family had a connection to your father’s company."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Connection?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

"What kind of connection?"

Before he could answer, Daniel interrupted.

"The kind where his family benefited when your father disappeared."

The room went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

"Did you know?"

He didn’t lie.

"No."

That answer should have comforted me.

But it didn’t.

Because he didn’t say no immediately.

He had to think.

And that hesitation mattered.

I stepped back.

For the first time that night, Adrian looked affected.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Just human.

"Elena."

I shook my head.

"I don’t know who to believe anymore."

Daniel took one step forward.

"Believe me."

I almost laughed.

The irony was painful.

"You?"

His face hardened.

"I made mistakes."

"That’s what you call stealing from me?"

His expression changed.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"She knows enough now."

Daniel stared at him.

"You still think you can control the situation."

Adrian ignored him.

He turned toward me.

"I need to show you something."

I didn’t move.

"What?"

"Your father’s last message."

My heart stopped.

"The video?"

"No."

He reached into his coat.

He removed a small silver key.

Not a normal key.

Old.

Worn.

Like it had been hidden for years.

"This belonged to your father."

I stared at it.

"Where did you get that?"

Adrian looked at Daniel.

"From the person who helped him disappear."

The entire room froze.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Daniel whispered:

"No."

Adrian placed the key on the table.

"There is a storage box."

My eyes moved to the key.

"What’s inside?"

Adrian looked at me.

"Everything your father tried to protect."

I reached toward it.

My fingers touched the cold metal.

Then the restaurant doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A face I had seen thousands of times in old photographs.

A face I had buried five years ago.

My hand froze on the key.

Because the man standing at the entrance looked at me and whispered:

"Elena."

My knees almost gave out.

The impossible had happened twice in one night.

My father was alive.

And he was standing in front of me.

But before I could move toward him, Adrian stepped in front of me.

Because he recognized the man’s expression.

And he knew something I didn’t.

The man lifted his hand slowly.

Pointing behind Adrian.

May you like

And said:

"Don’t trust him. He was the one who found me first."
