Chapter 7 - The Enemy Behind The Perfect Smile

The restaurant door opened behind us.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone was waiting to see who would walk through.
I turned slowly.
My heart was already prepared for another impossible truth.
Another person who should not exist.
Another secret.
But the person standing there was someone I knew.
Someone who had been smiling at me for years.
Someone who had shaken my hand.
Someone who had told me everything would be okay.
My former family attorney.
Jonathan Pierce.
The man who handled my father’s estate after his death.
The man who helped me sign the papers when I lost my company.
The man who looked me in the eyes and told me:
"Your father left you nothing but memories."
My blood went cold.
Because he was looking at me like he knew I had finally discovered the truth.
Daniel immediately stepped back.
Victoria whispered:
"No..."
Adrian’s expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"You."
Jonathan smiled.
A calm, professional smile.
The same smile he had worn every time he delivered bad news to me.
The same smile that made me believe he was helping.
"Hello, Elena."
I couldn’t speak.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was trying to understand how many people had been lying to me.
My father.
Daniel.
Victoria.
And now him.
"You’re alive."
Jonathan looked at my father.
A small smile appeared.
"Unfortunately."
My father’s face became hard.
"You were supposed to be in prison."
The restaurant went silent.
I looked at Jonathan.
"What?"
He ignored me.
His eyes stayed on my father.
"You always did know how to create a dramatic entrance, Richard."
My father took a step forward.
"Why are you here?"
Jonathan looked at me.
"Because she finally found out."
Those words made my stomach twist.
Not because of what he said.
Because of how he said it.
Like my entire life had been a game.
And everyone else knew the rules except me.
Adrian moved slightly closer.
Not touching me.
Just there.
Jonathan noticed.
"You still protect her."
Adrian’s voice was cold.
"Leave."
Jonathan laughed softly.
"Still giving orders."
He looked around the restaurant.
Then back at Adrian.
"You really think you can fix what happened?"
I looked at Adrian.
"What happened?"
Jonathan smiled.
"Ask him."
I hated those words.
Every person who wanted to destroy me used them.
Ask him.
Find out yourself.
Wait until later.
Not now.
I was done waiting.
I looked at Adrian.
"Tell me."
The entire room froze.
Adrian looked at me.
Then Jonathan.
Then my father.
Finally, he answered.
"Five years ago, I helped your father disappear."
I already knew that.
But somehow hearing it again hurt.
Jonathan interrupted.
"That’s not the whole truth."
Adrian’s eyes became darker.
"Don’t."
Jonathan ignored him.
"He didn’t just help your father escape."
He looked at me.
"He helped him hide something."
My father’s expression changed.
"Jonathan."
The warning in his voice was clear.
But Jonathan smiled.
Because he had finally found something powerful enough.
"The account."
My heart stopped.
"What account?"
Nobody answered.
Jonathan looked pleased.
"The account your father created before he disappeared."
I looked at my father.
"What account?"
My father closed his eyes.
And that reaction told me everything.
"You had money hidden?"
He looked at me.
"It wasn’t money."
"Then what?"
Jonathan answered.
"Ownership."
The word felt heavy.
He stepped closer.
"Your father didn’t leave you a company because the company was never the thing he wanted you to inherit."
I stared at him.
"What did he leave me?"
Jonathan smiled.
"The truth."
I almost laughed.
Because that was becoming the cruelest joke.
Everyone kept saying truth.
But every truth came with another secret.
Another wound.
Another person who knew more than me.
Jonathan reached into his briefcase.
He removed a document.
Old.
Yellowed.
He placed it on the table.
"This is your father’s original will."
My father looked alarmed.
"Where did you get that?"
Jonathan smiled.
"You gave it to me."
The room froze.
My father stared at him.
"I never trusted you."
Jonathan’s smile disappeared for the first time.
"That’s why you were never meant to see what I changed."
My eyes moved between them.
"What did you change?"
Jonathan looked at me.
"Your inheritance."
The words barely left his mouth before Adrian grabbed the document.
Jonathan didn’t fight.
He expected it.
Adrian scanned the pages.
His expression became serious.
"What did you do?"
Jonathan leaned back.
"Nothing illegal."
Adrian looked up.
"You erased her name."
Silence.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
My name.
My father’s will.
My inheritance.
Everything.
Jonathan had removed me.
"Why?"
My voice was quiet.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Jonathan.
"Why would you do that?"
For the first time, his expression softened.
Almost like pity.
"You were never supposed to survive this."
The words cut deeper than anything else.
Daniel looked away.
Victoria covered her mouth.
My father looked devastated.
But Adrian...
Adrian looked dangerous.
Very dangerous.
He stepped toward Jonathan.
"You made her a target."
Jonathan didn’t deny it.
"She already was."
My father whispered:
"No."
Jonathan looked at him.
"You should have told her."
My father’s face changed.
"Told me what?"
Nobody spoke.
I felt my hands shaking.
"What?"
Jonathan looked directly at me.
"Your father wasn’t the only one who disappeared five years ago."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What are you talking about?"
He slowly opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A hospital photograph.
A baby.
A newborn.
I stared at it.
Confused.
Then I saw the name.
Written underneath.
Elena Brooks.
My breath stopped.
"No."
My father stepped forward.
"Jonathan, don’t."
Jonathan smiled.
"You spent years protecting her from this."
He looked at me.
"But she deserves to know."
My fingers touched the photograph.
"That’s impossible."
Jonathan tilted his head.
"Is it?"
I looked at my father.
His face answered before his words did.
He was terrified.
Not for himself.
For me.
"Elena..."
My voice broke.
"What is this?"
My father looked away.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because he wasn’t denying it.
Jonathan leaned closer.
"Your father didn’t disappear because of business."
The room went silent.
"He disappeared because someone tried to kill his daughter."
My heart stopped.
"My daughter?"
Jonathan nodded.
"You."
The words echoed.
No.
I remembered my childhood.
My mother.
My father.
Our home.
Nothing about this made sense.
Then Adrian suddenly looked at the entrance.
His hand moved toward his coat.
Everyone noticed.
Including me.
"What is it?"
He didn’t answer.
Because outside the restaurant window...
A black car had stopped.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
And Adrian whispered the one name that made my father turn completely pale.
"Marcus."
May you like
My father took one step back.
Because the man walking toward the restaurant was the person he believed had died five years ago...
