Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Waited Behind The Door

A little girl stood barefoot outside a locked door, crying: "Stop hurting my mama!" When Mafia boss Matteo Valenti arrived, he discovered a broken maid name tag beside her cloth rabbit. Four words were carved into the back: "Come find me, Matteo." Matteo suddenly realized this wasn't a theft case.
The first thing Matteo Valenti noticed was the silence.
Not the girl.
Not the locked door.
Not even the strange message carved into the broken name tag lying on the marble floor.
The silence.
Because Valenti Mansion was never silent.
The massive estate had a rhythm of its own. Guards moved through the corridors every hour. Servants whispered behind kitchen doors. Phones rang constantly inside Matteo’s private office. Business partners from different countries waited for his decisions, and enemies waited for his mistakes.
The mansion was alive.
Until that night.
Until Matteo walked through the front entrance after a meeting that lasted longer than expected and realized something was wrong.
No footsteps.
No voices.
No movement.
Just a little girl standing beneath the marble staircase, staring at a locked door at the end of the west hallway.
A child who should not have been there.
Matteo stopped walking.
His guards immediately noticed the change in his expression.
"Boss?"
One of them stepped forward.
Matteo raised his hand.
Nobody moved.
The girl slowly turned around.
She was tiny.
Maybe five years old.
Her bare feet were dirty from walking across the cold floor. Her old white nightgown hung loosely around her small frame. Her blonde-brown hair was messy, as if someone had been running their fingers through it repeatedly.
She hugged a worn cloth rabbit against her chest.
The rabbit had one button eye missing.
The girl looked at Matteo like she had been waiting for him.
Like she knew he was the only person who could help her.
"Are you Matteo?"
Her voice was barely louder than a whisper.
The question surprised him.
Most people in his world knew exactly who he was.
They knew the name Valenti.
They knew the reputation.
They knew not to speak to him unless invited.
But this little girl said his name like she was searching for a person.
Not a monster.
Matteo slowly walked closer.
"Who are you?"
The girl tightened her grip on the rabbit.
"My name is Sophie."
A pause.
"My mommy works here."
The words hit him harder than he expected.
Because there was only one woman in the mansion who had disappeared recently.
Elena.
The maid who had worked for the Valenti family for three years.
Elena had never complained.
Never caused problems.
Never asked for anything.
She was the kind of person who disappeared into the background.
Until five days ago.
Five days ago, Elena vanished.
The explanation Matteo received was simple.
She stole expensive jewelry from the west wing and ran away.
The evidence looked perfect.
Almost too perfect.
The police report.
The missing items.
The witnesses.
Everything pointed toward Elena.
But Matteo never believed it.
Because Elena had always been careful.
She knew every camera location in the mansion.
She knew every security procedure.
And most importantly...
She would never leave her daughter behind.
Matteo looked down at Sophie.
"Where is your mother?"
The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.
She looked toward the locked wooden door behind her.
The west hallway.
The place everyone avoided.
The place nobody entered without Matteo’s permission.
"She was there."
Sophie whispered.
"She told me to hide."
A cold feeling moved through Matteo’s chest.
"Who told you to hide?"
The girl looked down.
Her fingers shook.
"The bad people."
The guards exchanged uneasy looks.
Matteo noticed.
Everyone in the mansion knew something.
Everyone was afraid of something.
And nobody had told him.
He crouched down in front of Sophie.
For years, people had called Matteo Valenti ruthless.
A man who built an empire by making difficult choices.
A man who never showed weakness.
But looking at this frightened child, he felt something he had not allowed himself to feel in a long time.
Concern.
"Sophie."
The girl looked at him.
"I need you to tell me everything."
She swallowed.
"My mommy said you would ask."
Matteo froze.
"She said that?"
Sophie nodded slowly.
Then she reached into the pocket of her nightgown and pulled something out.
A broken name tag.
Matteo recognized it instantly.
ELENA.
The metal was scratched.
The pin was broken.
But on the back, someone had carved four words.
Come find me, Matteo.
The hallway became colder.
Because Elena had not written a goodbye.
She had written a message.
A message meant only for him.
Matteo took the name tag carefully.
"Where did you find this?"
Sophie pointed toward the locked door.
"She pushed it under the door."
Matteo stared at the lock.
That door had been closed for years.
Even his most trusted employees avoided talking about it.
Officially, it was an unused storage room.
But Matteo knew better.
Nothing inside his mansion stayed secret without a reason.
He stood slowly.
"Who has the key?"
Nobody answered.
That was the problem.
Silence.
Again.
Matteo turned toward his guards.
"Who has the key?"
One guard looked uncomfortable.
"Sir..."
Matteo’s eyes hardened.
"Answer me."
The guard lowered his head.
"Only three people."
"Who?"
"Yourself."
A pause.
"Your father’s old advisor, Marco Bellini."
Another pause.
"And..."
Matteo waited.
The guard swallowed.
"Your uncle."
Matteo’s expression changed.
His uncle.
The one person in the Valenti family who had been pushing him to give up control of the business.
The one person who had questioned every decision Matteo made.
The one person who had been inside the mansion the night Elena disappeared.
Sophie suddenly grabbed Matteo’s sleeve.
"Mr. Matteo."
He looked down.
Her face was pale.
"What?"
She pointed at the door.
"He said you would never open it."
Matteo felt his entire body become still.
"Who said that?"
The girl’s lips trembled.
"The man who locked my mommy inside."
The guards immediately reached for their weapons.
Matteo did not move.
Because suddenly the missing maid case looked different.
The stolen jewelry.
The accusations.
The disappearance.
None of it made sense anymore.
Someone had framed Elena.
Someone had hidden the truth.
And someone inside his own mansion knew exactly what was behind that door.
Matteo placed his hand on the lock.
He had spent years believing he controlled everything inside these walls.
But now he understood one thing.
Someone had been controlling him.
He turned the handle.
The lock clicked.
The door moved slightly.
Then stopped.
Because from the other side...
someone whispered his name.
"Matteo..."
May you like
His hand froze.
It was Elena’s voice.
