Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

The photograph slipped from Grant Maddox’s hand.

For a man who had built an empire by reading people before they spoke, he hated the fact that he could not understand the expression on Emma Carter’s face.

It was not fear.

It was not surprise.

It was something much deeper.

Pain.

The stranger standing across from them watched quietly.

He seemed to enjoy watching Grant struggle to understand.

"Where did you get this?" Emma asked.

Her voice was controlled.

Too controlled.

Grant noticed.

A normal person would have reacted emotionally.

They would have demanded answers.

They would have asked who the person in the picture was.

Emma did none of those things.

She already knew.

"You know exactly where I got it," the man replied.

Emma looked away.

The restaurant continued moving around them.

People laughed.

Glasses touched.

Music played softly from the corner.

But at their table, everything had changed.

Grant looked down at the photograph again.

It showed Emma standing beside a man in a dark suit.

They were outside a government building.

The man was older.

Confident.

Someone important.

Someone Grant recognized.

His stomach tightened.

Because the man in the picture was Arthur Vale.

The former director of international emergency transportation programs.

A man who disappeared after a scandal eleven months earlier.

A man whose disappearance had destroyed several companies.

Including one of Grant’s biggest competitors.

Grant looked at Emma.

"Why are you standing beside Arthur Vale?"

Emma said nothing.

The stranger smiled.

"Because she was not his assistant."

He leaned closer.

"She was the person who negotiated every emergency route that kept three countries supplied during the crisis."

Grant stared at Emma.

The waitress.

The woman carrying plates.

The woman he had laughed at.

Impossible.

Emma finally spoke.

"Leave."

The stranger laughed softly.

"Still pretending?"

Her eyes hardened.

"Leave, Daniel."

Grant caught the name.

Daniel.

The stranger's smile faded slightly.

"Interesting."

He looked at Grant.

"She never tells people names."

Emma stepped forward.

"Daniel, this is not the place."

"Actually, this is the perfect place."

Daniel looked around the expensive restaurant.

"Because everyone here believes they understand power."

He looked at Emma.

"They see a uniform and think they know your value."

Grant felt the words hit harder than they should have.

Because only an hour earlier, he had thought the exact same thing.

Emma reached for the photograph.

Daniel handed it to her.

Their fingers touched briefly.

Grant noticed something.

A small scar on Emma’s wrist.

A scar he had seen before.

Not on her.

On a company report.

A signature.

A woman named E. Carter had approved a dangerous emergency route after three other executives refused.

The decision saved thousands of shipments.

Grant remembered the headlines.

The unknown woman who solved a transportation crisis overnight.

Nobody had ever found her.

Because the person behind the decision had disappeared.

Grant looked at Emma.

"You were E. Carter."

Emma slowly turned toward him.

The silence answered before she did.

Daniel smiled.

"Now you understand."

Grant stood there.

For the first time in years, he had no immediate response.

That was rare.

People usually waited for him to speak.

They waited for his decisions.

His approval.

His judgment.

But Emma Carter had been standing in front of him for weeks, and he had never once considered that she might be the smartest person in the room.

"Why are you hiding?" Grant asked.

Emma looked at him.

"Because people like you don't look for people like me."

The answer was quiet.

But it landed.

Grant frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you only notice someone when you need something from them."

The words were not angry.

That made them worse.

Emma picked up the tray.

"I need to return to work."

Grant watched her walk away.

Daniel stayed.

"You should stop looking at her like she is a mystery."

Grant turned.

"What is she?"

Daniel looked toward Emma.

"Someone who lost everything because she trusted the wrong person."

Grant’s expression changed.

"Who?"

Daniel did not answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his coat and placed another envelope on the table.

"This contains the reason she disappeared."

Grant looked at the envelope.

"Why give it to me?"

Daniel smiled.

"Because soon, someone will come looking for her."

"Who?"

Daniel stood.

"The same people who made sure everyone believed she was gone."

Before Grant could ask another question, Daniel walked away.

Grant grabbed the envelope.

He opened it.

Inside was a stack of documents.

The first page was a legal agreement.

The second page was a photograph.

The third page made him freeze.

A company logo.

Maddox Global Logistics.

His company.

Signed eleven months ago.

But Grant had never seen this contract before.

He turned the page.

There was a handwritten note.

One sentence.

"Your company destroyed her life."

Grant read it again.

Impossible.

Someone had used his company.

Someone inside his company.

He looked across the restaurant.

Emma was carrying another plate.

Smiling politely at customers.

Pretending everything was normal.

But Grant knew now.

Nothing about her was normal.

He waited until closing time.

The restaurant emptied slowly.

Emma removed her apron and prepared to leave.

Grant stood near the entrance.

"We need to talk."

Emma stopped.

"I don't think we do."

"You were involved with Maddox Global."

Her expression changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But he saw it.

"You read the documents."

"I did."

"And?"

Grant held the papers.

"Tell me why my company is connected to what happened to you."

Emma looked toward the empty restaurant.

Then back at him.

"Because someone wanted me gone."

"Who?"

She hesitated.

That hesitation told him more than an answer.

"Emma."

She looked at him.

"Do you really want to know?"

"Yes."

She stepped closer.

For the first time, Grant saw something behind her calm expression.

Fear.

Not for herself.

For him.

"Then you need to understand one thing."

"What?"

"The person who ruined my life..."

She paused.

"...still works for you."

Grant felt the room become colder.

"Who?"

Emma reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old phone.

The screen was cracked.

She turned it on.

There was one saved message.

One message she had never deleted.

Grant looked at the screen.

The sender's name appeared.

And his face changed instantly.

Because the message came from someone he trusted most.

Someone who had been sitting beside him in every board meeting.

Someone who knew every secret inside Maddox Global.

Emma slowly handed him the phone.

"Read it."

Grant looked down.

The message was dated eleven months ago.

And the first line said:

"Arthur Vale is gone. Now we take care of Emma Carter."

Grant stopped breathing.

Then another notification appeared.

A new message.

Sent seconds ago.

Emma looked at the screen.

Her face turned pale.

May you like

Because the sender had written only four words.

"She is with him."
