Chapter 1 - The Little Girl Behind the Curtain

A seven-year-old girl reached for a champagne glass at a crowded gala table and screamed: "Stop! Don't drink it!"

When mafia boss Kenji Takahashi arrived, he discovered a shattered crystal glass beside his dinner plate. But a tiny handwritten note was hidden inside the girl's white dress: "Four men. One poison." Kenji suddenly realized this wasn't an accident.

The sound of crystal breaking echoed through the entire ballroom.

Hundreds of guests stopped moving.

The musicians lowered their instruments.

The conversations disappeared.

For a few seconds, nobody understood why a little girl in a white dress had thrown herself across the table of the most dangerous man in San Francisco.

Kenji Takahashi was not a man people touched.

Not by accident.

Not by mistake.

And definitely not by a child who had just interrupted his private dinner with four of his closest associates.

The seven-year-old girl stood frozen beside the table, her small hands trembling. Her eyes were locked on the broken champagne glass scattered across the marble floor.

Kenji looked down at the pieces.

Then he looked at her.

His expression was unreadable.

"Do you understand what you just did?" he asked quietly.

The little girl swallowed.

She was scared.

Everyone could see it.

But she didn't run.

"I saved you," she whispered.

The room became even quieter.

One of the men sitting beside Kenji laughed nervously.

"Boss, this is ridiculous. She's just a child."

Kenji slowly turned his eyes toward him.

The man immediately stopped smiling.

Because everyone in that room knew one thing.

Kenji Takahashi noticed everything.

A person could hide a weapon.

A person could hide a lie.

But they couldn't hide fear from him.

The little girl looked toward the four men.

Her eyes moved from one face to another.

She had been watching them all night.

Listening.

Reading their lips.

Trying to understand words she was never supposed to hear.

Her name was Lily Nakamura.

And she had not come to the gala to save a stranger.

She had come because someone she loved was already in danger.

Earlier that evening, Lily had been hiding behind the velvet curtains near the ballroom entrance.

She was supposed to stay there.

That was what her mother told her.

"Don't move."

"Don't make noise."

"Don't let anyone know you're here."

Those were the only instructions.

But Lily had broken the first rule when she heard four men talking.

She didn't understand everything.

But she understood enough.

Poison.

Glass.

Midnight.

Kenji Takahashi.

At first, she thought she was wrong.

Adults didn't talk about killing people.

Not at beautiful dinners.

Not while wearing expensive suits.

Not while smiling.

But then she saw one of the men secretly pour something into the glass.

That was when she stopped being afraid.

She became desperate.

Now she stood in front of the man everyone feared.

And somehow, he was the only person in the room looking at her like he wanted the truth.

"Who told you?" Kenji asked.

Lily looked down.

Her fingers tightened around the fabric of her dress.

"My mom."

A strange reaction passed through the room.

Kenji noticed.

"Your mother knows about this?"

The girl nodded slowly.

"She knew they were going to hurt you."

The four men immediately exchanged looks.

Only for a second.

But Kenji saw it.

He saw everything.

One of them, Hiro Sato, stood up.

"Boss, this is becoming a misunderstanding."

Kenji raised one hand.

The man stopped.

"Sit down."

The command was quiet.

But everyone obeyed.

Kenji looked back at Lily.

"What is your mother's name?"

The girl hesitated.

Her eyes became wet.

"Emma."

The name hit the room differently.

Kenji's face changed.

Only slightly.

But Lily noticed.

"You know her," she whispered.

Kenji didn't answer.

Because he did know Emma Nakamura.

Ten years earlier, she had worked for his organization.

Not as a criminal.

As someone who cleaned up the damage criminals left behind.

She was the only person who had ever told him he was becoming someone he wouldn't recognize.

Then one day, she disappeared.

Everyone told him she had betrayed him.

Everyone told him she had stolen confidential information and escaped.

But now her daughter was standing in front of him, saving his life.

And that meant someone had lied.

Kenji looked toward the four men.

"Nobody leaves."

Security moved instantly.

The guests began whispering.

The perfect gala had turned into a crime scene.

Lily finally released the breath she had been holding.

But then she noticed something.

A man near the entrance.

Someone she had seen before.

Someone her mother warned her about.

Her face went pale.

Kenji noticed.

"What is it?"

Lily slowly pointed toward the doorway.

Her voice barely came out.

"That man..."

Everyone turned.

May you like

The man at the entrance smiled.

And then Lily whispered the name her mother told her never to say...
