Chapter 3 - The Name Hidden Inside Maddox Global

The phone slipped from Grant Maddox’s hand.
For several seconds, he did not move.
He only stared at the message.
"She is with him."
Four words.
Simple.
But they carried a warning.
Someone was watching.
Someone knew Emma was standing beside him.
Someone inside his company had been waiting for this moment.
Emma slowly took the phone back.
"Now you understand why I disappeared."
Grant looked at her.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"I understand why someone wanted you to disappear."
Emma studied him.
"You still don't understand the worst part."
Grant looked at the message again.
"Tell me."
She hesitated.
The woman who had faced executives, governments, and international negotiations without fear suddenly looked uncertain.
That bothered Grant more than anything.
"What is the worst part?"
Emma looked toward the dark windows of the restaurant.
"The person who sent that message..."
She paused.
"...is not trying to find me."
Grant frowned.
"Then what are they doing?"
Emma looked directly at him.
"They are checking if you know the truth."
The words stayed between them.
Grant felt something he rarely experienced.
Doubt.
Not about Emma.
About himself.
For years, he believed his company was built on information.
Numbers.
Contracts.
Reports.
Every decision passed through his hands.
Every major employee answered to him.
But now a woman who had been serving his dinner was telling him there was an entire hidden world inside his own company.
And he had never seen it.
"Who sent the message?" he asked.
Emma looked away.
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
Her eyes returned to him.
"You are still doing it."
"Doing what?"
"Thinking everyone hides information because they want something from you."
Grant said nothing.
Because she was right.
Emma took a deep breath.
"The message came from an encrypted system. The same system used during the operation that destroyed Arthur Vale."
Grant's expression changed.
"Operation?"
Emma nodded.
"Arthur wasn't involved in a scandal."
"Then what happened?"
"He discovered someone was using Maddox Global's transportation network for illegal transfers."
Grant immediately shook his head.
"No."
Emma watched him.
"You believe that because you trust your company."
"I built that company."
"Exactly."
Her voice softened.
"That is why they used it."
Grant looked down.
The sentence bothered him because it made sense.
Someone using his name.
His reputation.
His infrastructure.
His resources.
Someone hiding behind him.
"Who else knew?"
Emma walked toward an empty table and sat down.
Grant followed.
For the first time that night, they were not a billionaire and a waitress.
They were two people sitting across from each other.
"Arthur found irregular shipments."
Emma placed her hands on the table.
"Containers that existed on paper but never arrived."
Grant listened carefully.
"He reported it internally."
"To whom?"
Emma looked at him.
"Your executive board."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"Who?"
She looked at him for several seconds.
Then she answered.
"Victor Hale."
Grant froze.
Victor Hale.
His chief operating officer.
His closest advisor.
The man who had worked beside him for nine years.
The person who knew every major decision before it became public.
Grant immediately stood.
"No."
Emma didn't react.
"You said that about the company too."
"This is different."
"Is it?"
Grant looked at her.
Victor was family in every way except blood.
He was the person Grant trusted when he needed honest advice.
The person who stayed when others left.
The person who helped him rebuild Maddox Global after a difficult year.
Emma saw the conflict on his face.
"I know what you are thinking."
"You don't know anything about me."
A small sadness appeared in her eyes.
"I know enough."
Grant looked away.
"Victor saved this company."
Emma nodded.
"And Arthur believed the same thing."
Silence.
"Until he found out he was wrong."
Grant walked toward the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
"What happened to Arthur?"
Emma didn't answer immediately.
When she finally spoke, her voice was lower.
"He tried to expose everything."
"And?"
"He disappeared."
Grant turned.
"The world thought he ran away because he was guilty."
Emma shook her head.
"He disappeared because he found proof."
"What proof?"
Emma reached into her bag.
She removed a small USB drive.
She placed it on the table.
Grant stared at it.
"What is that?"
"The reason I stopped being Emma Carter."
He looked at the drive.
"Why didn't you release it?"
Emma smiled slightly.
Not happily.
Because she already knew the answer.
"Because nobody would believe me."
Grant looked confused.
"You were the person who solved the emergency route crisis."
"That was before."
"Before what?"
"Before powerful people decided I was a problem."
Grant picked up the USB drive.
"What's inside?"
"Everything Arthur collected."
"Then why give it to me?"
Emma looked at him.
"Because I need to know if you are part of it."
The answer surprised him.
"You think I am?"
"I don't know."
Grant slowly put the drive down.
That hurt more than an accusation.
Because Emma was not angry.
She was being careful.
"After everything I have done, you think I could be involved?"
Emma looked at him.
"I think powerful people don't always know what happens beneath them."
Grant wanted to argue.
But he couldn't.
Because that was exactly what had happened.
A waiter approached the table.
"Miss Carter?"
Emma turned.
The waiter looked nervous.
"There is someone asking for you outside."
Her expression changed instantly.
"Who?"
The waiter swallowed.
"He didn't give a name."
Grant noticed the fear in her eyes.
Not surprise.
Fear.
He stood.
"Stay here."
Emma grabbed his arm.
"No."
The contact lasted only a second.
But Grant felt how tense she was.
"Don't go outside."
"Why?"
"Because if they know you're with me..."
She stopped.
Grant looked at her.
"If they know what?"
Emma released his arm.
Her voice became almost a whisper.
"They won't come for me."
A pause.
"They will come for you."
The restaurant suddenly felt too quiet.
Grant looked toward the entrance.
A shadow moved behind the glass doors.
Someone was waiting.
Emma reached for her bag.
Grant stopped her.
"You are not leaving alone."
She looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because someone inside my company is trying to destroy you."
Emma studied him.
"And you believe me now?"
Grant looked at the USB drive.
Then at the door.
"Yes."
For the first time, Emma saw something different in him.
Not arrogance.
Not confidence.
Determination.
They walked toward the back exit instead.
But before they reached the door, Grant's phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
His face changed.
Emma immediately noticed.
"What?"
Grant slowly turned the screen toward her.
The message contained a photograph.
A photograph taken inside the restaurant.
Taken only seconds earlier.
It showed Grant and Emma standing together.
Below the image were five words.
"Ask her about the child."
Emma stopped walking.
The color disappeared from her face.
May you like
Because she knew exactly what child they meant.
And then the back exit door opened by itself.
