Chapter 8 - The Man Behind The Door

The photograph stayed on the screen.
Grant Maddox couldn't look away.
The person standing behind Rachel wasn't a stranger.
It wasn't an enemy.
It was someone who had attended his family dinners.
Someone who knew his private schedule.
Someone who had access to every important decision inside Maddox Global.
Someone he trusted.
Victor Hale.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Emma looked at Grant.
She didn't need to say anything.
She saw the answer on his face.
The last piece of his denial disappeared.
"He was there."
Grant's voice was quiet.
Lucas nodded.
"Yes."
Grant looked at the picture again.
"Why?"
Emma took a step closer.
"Because he wanted to know if Rachel told us."
Grant looked at her.
"You think Rachel contacted us because she escaped?"
Emma shook her head.
"No."
"Then why?"
Her eyes remained on the photograph.
"Because Rachel was always smarter than people thought."
Grant frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Emma looked at him.
"It means if Rachel wanted to disappear, nobody would find her."
A pause.
"But if she wanted someone to find her..."
She looked at Lucas.
"She would leave a trail."
Grant understood.
Rachel wasn't asking for rescue.
She was sending a warning.
Lucas opened the message again.
"Trust nobody here."
Grant focused on the word.
Here.
Not there.
Not outside.
Here.
Inside.
"She is inside the building."
Lucas nodded.
"The private records facility."
Emma immediately shook her head.
"No."
Grant looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because nobody goes inside that building without Victor knowing."
Lucas looked at her.
"Exactly."
Grant stood.
"Then we go."
Emma grabbed his arm.
"Grant."
He stopped.
She looked at him.
"You don't understand what you're walking into."
His eyes met hers.
"I understand enough."
"No."
Her voice became softer.
"You don't."
The room became quiet.
Emma released his arm.
"That building isn't just where Victor stores documents."
"What is it?"
She hesitated.
"It's where he keeps secrets."
Grant looked at Lucas.
"And you know this?"
Lucas nodded.
"Arthur discovered it."
"Then why didn't he expose it?"
Lucas looked down.
"Because he discovered something worse."
"What?"
Lucas looked at Emma.
"Victor wasn't acting alone."
Grant felt the weight of those words.
"Who else?"
Nobody answered.
That was becoming a pattern.
Too many secrets.
Too many missing pieces.
Grant walked toward the door.
"We are going."
Emma didn't move.
"Grant."
He turned.
"For eleven months, you thought I was just a waitress."
The words caught him.
"You thought I didn't understand your world."
She looked at him.
"But I spent years studying people like Victor."
A pause.
"People who smile while destroying lives."
Grant listened.
"If you go there angry, you lose."
She stepped closer.
"If you go there believing you are untouchable, you lose."
Her voice lowered.
"You need to go there knowing something."
"What?"
Emma looked directly at him.
"Victor already won once."
The sentence stayed with him.
Because she was right.
Someone had hidden the truth from him.
Someone had controlled information inside his own company.
Someone had manipulated the person who thought he controlled everything.
Grant picked up his coat.
"Then this time he doesn't."
The Maddox Global private records facility was located twenty minutes outside Manhattan.
Officially, it was an archive building.
A place where old contracts and legal documents were stored.
Unofficially, it was where Victor kept information that could never appear in public.
Grant knew the building.
He had approved the purchase.
He had signed the paperwork.
But he had never entered the lower floors.
That bothered him.
Now he understood why.
The security system recognized him immediately.
The gates opened.
No questions.
No alarms.
Nothing.
Emma noticed.
"That's strange."
Grant looked at her.
"What?"
"They let you in."
"Why wouldn't they?"
She looked at the cameras.
"Because if Victor knows we're coming..."
She stopped.
Grant understood.
The cameras were watching.
They wanted them there.
They weren't breaking in.
They were being invited.
Lucas looked at the building.
"We should leave."
Grant shook his head.
"No."
"Grant."
"No."
His voice was firm.
"If he wants us here, then we find out why."
Emma looked at him.
For the first time, she saw something different.
Not arrogance.
Not confidence.
Something closer to courage.
They entered.
The lobby was empty.
Too empty.
No employees.
No guards.
No movement.
Only a large screen behind the reception desk.
The screen turned on.
A video started playing.
Victor Hale appeared.
Grant froze.
Victor looked exactly the same.
Calm.
Professional.
Almost friendly.
"Grant."
The video version of Victor smiled.
"If you are watching this, then Emma Carter finally told you the truth."
Emma's expression changed.
Victor continued.
"I knew this day would come."
Grant stepped closer.
"You recorded this?"
The video continued.
"I know what you are thinking."
Victor smiled.
"You believe I betrayed you."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"I believe you have been lying."
Victor looked directly into the camera.
"That depends on what you think the truth is."
The video paused.
Then Victor continued.
"You built Maddox Global because you wanted to protect people from chaos."
Grant said nothing.
"But you forgot something."
The screen changed.
Documents appeared.
Photos.
Medical records.
Company files.
"People with power don't always destroy things directly."
Victor's voice continued.
"Sometimes they simply control who gets to know the truth."
Emma stepped forward.
"What are you doing?"
Victor answered from the screen.
"Showing Grant what happened."
More files appeared.
Grant saw his own signature.
Thousands of documents.
Approvals.
Transfers.
But something was wrong.
The signatures were his.
The decisions were his.
But he had never seen any of them.
"This is impossible."
Emma looked at the screen.
"No."
She whispered.
"It's worse."
Grant looked at her.
"What?"
She pointed.
"The dates."
He looked closer.
Every document was created after meetings where Grant had been present.
Someone had used his identity.
His authority.
His name.
Victor continued.
"Grant, you always wanted to know why I stayed beside you for so long."
The screen showed old pictures.
Grant and Victor.
Years earlier.
Before Maddox Global became an empire.
"I wasn't protecting your company."
A pause.
"I was protecting what was hidden underneath it."
The screen went black.
Then one final file appeared.
A medical record.
Grant stared.
Because the name on the record was familiar.
Emma's.
And below it was another name.
Noah Maddox.
Grant's heart stopped.
The screen showed one more line.
"Biological father confirmed."
Grant stepped closer.
His hands shook.
But before he could read the rest, the entire building locked down.
Heavy doors slammed shut around them.
Red lights flashed.
Emma looked toward the entrance.
"No."
Grant turned.
"What?"
She stared at the locked door.
"He's here."
A voice came through the speakers.
Not a recording.
A live voice.
Victor Hale.
"Grant."
Everyone froze.
Victor continued.
"I think it's time we finally talk."
The elevator at the end of the hallway began moving.
Slowly.
The numbers descended.
One floor.
Two floors.
Three floors.
Then it stopped.
The doors opened.
May you like
And the person who stepped out was not Victor.
It was Noah.
