Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Never Died

The door opened wider.
Emma Carter stopped breathing.
Grant Maddox saw her reaction before he saw the person standing outside.
That was enough.
Whoever was there was not a stranger.
It was someone connected to the part of Emma’s life she had buried.
A man stepped into the private office.
He was wearing a dark jacket.
His hair was slightly longer than Grant expected.
His face was thinner.
Older.
But the eyes were the same.
Emma stared at him.
"No."
The man looked at her.
"Hello, Emma."
Her hand covered her mouth.
For eleven months, she had repeated the same memory.
The phone call.
The hospital report.
The confirmation.
Her brother was gone.
But now he was standing in front of her.
Alive.
Grant looked between them.
"This is your brother?"
The man ignored him.
His eyes stayed on Emma.
"You look different."
Emma took a step back.
"You died."
The man smiled sadly.
"I know."
Her eyes filled with anger.
Not happiness.
Not relief.
Anger.
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I had no choice."
"You always had a choice."
The man's expression changed.
For a moment, he looked hurt.
Then he looked tired.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
Emma laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
"You don't get to say that."
Grant watched silently.
He had seen negotiations between powerful people.
He had seen executives destroy each other with a few carefully chosen words.
But this was different.
This was personal.
This was family.
The man finally looked at Grant.
"You must be Grant Maddox."
Grant's expression hardened.
"And you are?"
The man extended his hand.
"Lucas Carter."
Grant didn't shake it.
"You're the person listed in the files."
Lucas looked at Emma.
"You showed him?"
Emma crossed her arms.
"He found out."
Lucas sighed.
"Then we are out of time."
Grant stepped closer.
"Start explaining."
Lucas looked at him.
"You really think you deserve answers?"
Grant stared.
"My company was used to destroy people's lives."
Lucas nodded.
"Yes."
"Then tell me everything."
Lucas studied him.
"You still think this is about your company."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"What else would it be about?"
Lucas looked at Emma.
"It's about the people who control what your company does."
Grant said nothing.
Lucas walked toward the table.
He picked up the USB drive.
"You opened the first layer."
"Arthur said the same thing."
Lucas's face changed slightly.
"You spoke to Arthur?"
Emma answered.
"He called."
Lucas froze.
"When?"
"Tonight."
The color drained from his face.
"What did he say?"
Emma looked at him.
"He said not to trust anyone."
Lucas closed his eyes.
For a second, he looked devastated.
Then he whispered:
"He knew."
Grant noticed.
"Knew what?"
Lucas placed the USB back down.
"That they found him."
Emma stepped forward.
"Who?"
Lucas looked at both of them.
"The people behind Maddox Global."
Grant immediately shook his head.
"Victor?"
Lucas didn't answer.
That silence was an answer.
Grant walked away.
"No."
Emma looked at him.
"You still can't accept it."
Grant turned.
"I can accept facts."
"Can you?"
The question hit him.
Because he wasn't sure.
Victor Hale had been with him through everything.
The failures.
The lawsuits.
The expansion.
The moments when everyone else doubted him.
Victor was the one person Grant never questioned.
But now every memory looked different.
Every conversation.
Every decision.
Every time Victor told him something was handled.
Maybe it wasn't.
Lucas noticed the conflict.
"He was never your partner."
Grant looked at him.
"Then what was he?"
Lucas answered quietly.
"Your shield."
"What does that mean?"
"It means every time something illegal happened inside your company, Victor made sure the evidence never reached you."
Grant stared.
"No."
Emma looked at him.
"Grant."
He shook his head.
"You don't understand."
Lucas laughed softly.
"Actually, I understand perfectly."
He pointed at Grant.
"You built Maddox Global because you wanted control."
Grant said nothing.
"But you became so focused on controlling everything that you trusted the person who promised to control the things you couldn't see."
The words were brutal.
Because they were true.
Lucas reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Emma recognized it immediately.
"Where did you get that?"
Lucas looked at her.
"Arthur gave it to me."
Her expression changed.
"You saw him?"
"Before he disappeared."
Grant stepped closer.
"When?"
"Two days after Emma vanished."
Emma looked confused.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Lucas looked down.
"Because I wasn't sure who was listening."
He handed the envelope to Emma.
She opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Only a few lines.
Her hands started shaking.
Grant watched.
"What does it say?"
Emma didn't answer.
Lucas spoke.
"It says Arthur knew someone close to him betrayed him."
Grant looked at the letter.
"Who?"
Emma finally whispered.
"He didn't write a name."
"Why?"
She turned the page.
"Because he wrote something else."
Grant waited.
Emma read the sentence aloud.
"If you are reading this, the person who betrayed me already knows about the child."
Silence.
Grant looked at Emma.
"The child."
She closed her eyes.
Lucas looked away.
Grant immediately noticed.
"You both know what that means."
Nobody answered.
"Emma."
She looked at him.
"I need the truth."
Her expression broke slightly.
"There was a reason I disappeared."
Grant waited.
"Eleven months ago, when Arthur discovered the hidden operation inside Maddox Global, he wasn't alone."
She paused.
"He had proof."
"About what?"
"About a payment."
"To whom?"
Emma looked at Lucas.
Lucas nodded.
She continued.
"To a private medical facility."
Grant frowned.
"Why?"
Emma's voice became quiet.
"Because someone was trying to erase a person from existence."
Grant looked confused.
"Who?"
Emma looked at the letter.
Then at him.
"The child."
The room became silent.
Grant stared.
"What child?"
Emma opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.
Everything became black.
Grant heard movement.
A chair falling.
Emma gasped.
Lucas shouted.
"Get down!"
A loud crash came from the window.
Glass shattered.
Grant grabbed Emma and pulled her to the floor.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then emergency lights turned on.
Red light filled the room.
Lucas immediately checked the hallway.
Empty.
Grant looked at Emma.
"Are you okay?"
She nodded.
But her eyes were fixed on the broken window.
Something had been thrown inside.
A small black device.
Lucas picked it up carefully.
His face changed.
"What is it?"
Lucas didn't answer.
He pressed one button.
A recording started playing.
A man's voice filled the room.
Calm.
Cold.
Familiar.
Grant froze.
Because he recognized the voice instantly.
It belonged to someone he trusted.
Victor Hale.
The recording played one sentence.
"If Emma Carter is alive, then the child is alive too."
Emma's face turned pale.
Lucas stopped the recording.
Grant stared at them.
"What child?"
Nobody answered.
Then Emma slowly looked at him.
May you like
And whispered the truth she had been hiding for eleven months.
"Your child."
