Chapter 11 - The Son Buried By The Family

The room went silent.
Grant Maddox stared at the document on the screen.
A child.
Twelve years ago.
His name attached to it.
His bloodline.
His family.
But a person he had never known existed.
"No."
The word left his mouth quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
"No."
Emma watched him carefully.
She saw the same expression she had seen when he discovered Noah.
Shock.
Confusion.
Pain.
But this time, something was different.
This was not about losing time.
This was about realizing his entire life had been built on missing pieces.
Grant looked at Victor on the screen.
"What is this?"
Victor didn't answer immediately.
He looked almost satisfied.
Not happy.
Satisfied.
Like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
"The truth."
Grant stepped closer.
"You expect me to believe you?"
"No."
Victor shook his head.
"I expect you to understand why everyone lied."
Grant looked at the file again.
The name was partially hidden.
Only the first name was visible.
Ethan.
A twelve-year-old secret.
A child his father had hidden.
A child nobody had told him about.
"Who is he?"
His mother's face appeared on the screen.
She looked away.
That hurt more than anything.
Because his mother was not denying it.
She knew.
"Mom."
She slowly looked back.
"Grant..."
His voice became colder.
"Who is Ethan?"
A long silence.
Then she answered.
"Your son."
The words felt impossible.
Grant stepped backward.
"No."
Emma looked at him.
Lucas remained silent.
Everyone knew.
Except him.
Again.
"How?"
His mother closed her eyes.
"Because your father made a decision."
Grant laughed once.
But there was no humor.
"My father."
He looked at Victor.
"My father did this?"
Victor nodded.
"Your father believed the Maddox name could not survive a scandal."
"What scandal?"
His mother looked down.
"Ethan was born before you took control of the company."
Grant stared.
"So?"
She hesitated.
"Your father believed having a child with another woman would damage your future."
Grant's face changed.
"Another woman?"
Victor answered.
"The woman who gave birth to Ethan worked for one of your family's companies."
Grant looked disgusted.
"And?"
"And your father paid her to disappear."
Silence.
Emma looked at Grant.
He looked broken.
Not because he had another child.
Because someone had decided a human life was a problem to solve.
A transaction.
A secret.
A number.
"What happened to the mother?"
Victor looked away.
"She died."
Grant's eyes narrowed.
"How?"
Nobody answered.
That silence told him enough.
"Victor."
Victor looked at him.
"You are asking the wrong questions."
Grant's voice became dangerous.
"What is the right question?"
Victor leaned forward.
"Why do you think I showed you this?"
Grant stared.
Because that was the real question.
Victor never gave anything without a reason.
"You want something."
A small smile appeared.
"Finally."
Grant looked at him.
"What?"
Victor looked at Emma.
Then Noah.
Then back at Grant.
"I want you to understand something."
The screen changed.
More documents appeared.
Old company records.
Private agreements.
Payments.
Names.
"Your father built Maddox Global with secrets."
Grant watched.
"Victor..."
"I spent years cleaning up those secrets."
"Why?"
"Because someone had to."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
She stepped closer.
"That is not why."
Victor looked annoyed.
"You always were difficult."
Emma ignored him.
"You didn't clean up the secrets."
Her voice became stronger.
"You collected them."
Silence.
Grant looked at Victor.
"What does she mean?"
Victor didn't answer.
Emma continued.
"He wasn't protecting the company."
She pointed at the screen.
"He was building leverage."
Grant looked back.
Every hidden file.
Every missing person.
Every secret.
It all connected.
Victor didn't want power over Maddox Global.
He wanted power over the people who owned it.
"Why?"
Victor smiled.
"Because people like your father never respected me."
Grant stared.
"So this was revenge?"
Victor's expression changed.
For the first time.
A real emotion appeared.
Anger.
"Do you know what it feels like to build something and still be treated like a servant?"
Grant didn't answer.
"I saved your family."
Victor's voice rose.
"I protected your company."
"I made impossible decisions while people like your father sat in offices pretending they were heroes."
Emma looked at him.
"So you became exactly like them."
Victor looked at her.
"No."
He smiled.
"I became better."
Grant felt disgust.
"You manipulated everyone."
Victor nodded.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised him.
"I did."
The screen changed again.
A security camera appeared.
A hallway.
A room.
A child.
Grant immediately recognized him.
Ethan.
Older than Noah.
Standing alone.
The image date was recent.
Grant froze.
"He is alive."
Nobody answered.
His mother started crying.
Grant looked at her.
"You knew?"
She nodded.
"I knew."
"Where is he?"
She looked away.
"Grant..."
"Where?"
Victor answered.
"Close."
Grant turned.
"What does that mean?"
Victor smiled.
"It means your family has been closer than you realized."
The camera footage moved.
A door opened.
Someone entered the room.
Grant stared.
Because he recognized the person.
It was someone he had seen his entire life.
Someone who had been part of the Maddox family since childhood.
Someone who had attended every major event.
Someone who had helped raise him.
The camera zoomed closer.
Emma whispered:
"No..."
Grant looked at her.
"You know them?"
She nodded slowly.
Because the person standing beside Ethan was not Victor.
It was not his mother.
It was someone else.
Someone they all believed was gone.
The screen showed the face clearly.
Arthur Vale.
Alive.
Grant stepped closer.
"Arthur?"
Victor's voice came through the speakers.
"Now you understand."
Grant stared.
"You lied about him too."
Victor smiled.
"No."
A pause.
"I lied about everyone."
The lights suddenly went out.
The screen disappeared.
A second later, emergency power returned.
But Victor's video was gone.
The cameras were offline.
And Arthur's image had vanished.
Emma looked at the hallway.
Something was moving outside.
Lucas reached for the door.
"Stay back."
The handle slowly turned.
Nobody spoke.
The door opened.
May you like
And the person standing there whispered one name.
"Grant."
