Chapter 1 - The Stranger Beneath the Waves

A woman pulled a bleeding stranger from a sinking jet and whispered: "Stay with me. Don't you dare die." When Elena Marlowe reached the shore, five black SUVs surrounded the unconscious man and a broken gold watch fell from his jacket. Inside the watch was a hidden engraving: "To Adrian. The truth survives." Elena suddenly realized she had saved someone who was supposed to be dead.

The private jet fell out of the clouds like a wounded star.

Elena Marlowe was driving along the coastal highway when she saw the explosion above the ocean.

One engine burned like a falling torch.

For one second, she thought it was just another accident she would hear about on the news.

Then she saw the aircraft hit the water.

The impact shook the entire coastline.

Metal twisted.

Glass shattered.

The jet disappeared beneath the waves.

Elena stopped her car without thinking.

She was not a rescue worker.

She was not trained for disasters.

She was just a woman who had spent her entire life unable to walk away when someone needed help.

She ran toward the ocean.

The water was freezing.

The waves pushed against her as she searched through the darkness.

Minutes passed.

Then she saw it.

The broken body of the private jet was sinking deeper.

A door was still open.

Inside was someone.

A man.

He was sitting in the passenger seat, unconscious.

Elena forced herself into the damaged cabin.

The pressure around her ears became painful.

The oxygen in her lungs started disappearing.

But she reached him.

He looked like someone who belonged in a world far away from hers.

A black suit.

Expensive clothing.

A face marked by scars and secrets.

She grabbed his seat belt.

It was stuck.

The aircraft moved deeper.

Elena pulled harder.

The metal snapped.

The man fell toward her.

For a moment, his eyes opened.

Only slightly.

But enough.

He looked directly at her.

And whispered one word.

"Run."

Elena froze.

She had expected fear.

Pain.

Confusion.

Not that.

She wrapped her arms around him and pushed toward the surface.

She did not know his name.

She did not know why a dying man would tell his rescuer to run.

She only knew one thing.

She could not leave him there.

When they finally broke through the surface, Elena dragged him toward the rocks near the shore.

She collapsed beside him.

She was shaking.

He was barely breathing.

Then she heard engines.

Not one.

Several.

Five black SUVs appeared on the coastal road.

They stopped at the exact place where she had pulled him from the ocean.

Men in dark suits stepped out.

They did not look like emergency responders.

They looked like soldiers.

The first man walked toward them.

His face changed when he saw the stranger lying beside Elena.

"No..."

He whispered.

Then he looked at Elena.

"Who saved him?"

Elena slowly stood.

"I did."

The man stared at her.

Then he looked back at the unconscious stranger.

"Do you know who you just brought back?"

Elena said nothing.

Because she did not.

The stranger slowly opened his eyes.

And every man around him lowered their heads.

"Adrian Voss."

The name meant nothing to Elena.

But the fear on their faces did.

Three years earlier, Adrian Voss had vanished.

The world believed he had died.

But Elena had just pulled him from the ocean.

Alive.

The man who approached her removed his sunglasses.

"My name is Marcus Vale."

He looked at Adrian.

"He's not just a businessman."

Elena felt a strange cold move through her.

"Then who is he?"

Marcus looked at her.

And before he could answer, Adrian's hand suddenly grabbed Elena's wrist.

His voice was weak.

But serious.

"Don't let them take me."

Everyone stopped.

Because Adrian Voss had just opened his eyes.

And he was looking at Elena like she was the only person in the world he could trust.

But then another vehicle arrived.

And the person who stepped out knew Elena's name...
