Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Was Never Supposed To Stand

A little girl grabbed the edge of her wheelchair and whispered: "Daddy... I want to walk." When mafia boss Adrian Vale arrived, he found a broken crystal bird beside his daughter’s chair. On the back was a tiny mark carved into the glass: "She knows the truth." Adrian realized the accident was not accidental.
The crystal bird hit the edge of the banquet table just as two hundred wealthy guests turned to stare at Clara Rowan.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The entire Vale mansion had gone silent.
Clara sat frozen in her wheelchair, her small hands trembling against the purple fabric of her dress. The broken crystal pieces scattered across the marble floor like pieces of a life everyone believed could never be repaired.
Adrian Vale stood at the entrance of the ballroom.
The most feared man in the city.
A man whose name made powerful people lower their voices.
A man who had built an empire through patience, strategy, and fear.
But at that moment, he was not looking at the guests.
He was looking at his daughter.
Six years.
Six years since Clara had stopped walking.
Six years since doctors had filled his home with medical reports, expensive treatments, and hopeless explanations.
Six years since his little girl had gone from running through the halls of the mansion to watching the world from a wheelchair.
"Clara," Adrian said quietly.
She looked down.
"I didn't mean to."
Her voice was barely audible.
Adrian walked toward her.
But before he could reach her, a young maid stepped forward.
Selene March.
Nobody important noticed her.
Servants were supposed to disappear into the background inside the Vale mansion.
They cleaned.
They carried trays.
They stayed silent.
But Selene did something nobody expected.
She knelt beside Clara.
"Don't move," Selene whispered.
The room immediately erupted.
"Who does she think she is?"
"She's touching Mr. Vale's daughter."
"Someone remove her."
Adrian raised his hand.
The room went quiet.
He wanted to know why the shy maid looked more concerned than the doctors who had treated Clara for years.
Selene gently picked up Clara's foot.
And Adrian noticed something.
She wasn't looking at the wheelchair.
She wasn't looking at the injury reports.
She was watching Clara's muscles.
"You noticed something," Adrian said.
Selene looked up.
Her face became pale.
"I think everyone was looking in the wrong place."
The words made the room colder.
Adrian stared at her.
"What did you say?"
Selene swallowed.
"I think Clara was never unable to walk."
A silence followed.
A dangerous silence.
Because nobody had ever dared challenge the doctors Adrian Vale trusted.
Nobody except a young maid holding his daughter's hand.
The family doctor stepped forward.
"Mr. Vale, this girl has no medical training."
Adrian ignored him.
His eyes stayed on Selene.
"Explain."
Selene looked at Clara.
"Can you feel your legs?"
Clara nodded.
"Sometimes."
"Can you move your toes?"
The little girl hesitated.
Everyone waited.
For six years, nobody had asked her that question.
Slowly...
Very slowly...
Clara tried.
Her tiny toes moved.
The room froze.
Adrian stopped breathing.
The doctor stepped back.
"No."
Clara looked down.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I moved."
Adrian walked closer.
For the first time in years, the powerful mafia boss looked completely lost.
His daughter had just done something everyone told him was impossible.
And the only person who believed she could was the quiet maid nobody remembered hiring.
Later that night, Adrian found Selene in the kitchen.
She was preparing tea.
"You knew."
Selene turned around.
"I suspected."
"Why?"
She looked uncomfortable.
"Because I saw her trying."
Adrian frowned.
"Trying?"
Selene nodded.
"Every night."
The answer shocked him.
"She practiced moving her feet alone."
Adrian felt something break inside him.
His daughter had been fighting a battle nobody knew existed.
"Why didn't she tell me?"
Selene looked away.
"Because someone told her not to."
Adrian's expression changed.
"Who?"
Selene reached into her apron pocket.
She pulled out a small piece of paper.
"I found this hidden inside her wheelchair."
Adrian took it.
Three words were written on it.
DON'T TRUST DADDY.
His hand tightened around the paper.
Because Clara had never written those words herself.
May you like
And when Adrian turned the paper over, he saw another message written underneath...
"Your wife knew the truth."
