Chapter 9 - The Son He Never Knew

The elevator doors opened.
Nobody moved.
Grant Maddox stared at the small boy standing inside.
For a moment, the entire world became silent.
The alarms.
The red lights.
The locked doors.
Everything disappeared.
Because the child standing in front of him was real.
Noah.
His son.
The boy looked around the room carefully.
He wasn't crying.
He wasn't scared.
That was the first thing Grant noticed.
The second thing was the way the boy held himself.
Quiet.
Careful.
Like someone who had learned not to trust strangers.
Emma stepped forward.
"Noah."
The boy immediately looked at her.
His expression changed.
The fear disappeared.
"Mom."
The word hit Grant harder than anything else that night.
Mom.
Emma was not just someone protecting a child.
She was his mother.
And Grant was the person who had never known.
Emma rushed forward and hugged him.
Noah held onto her tightly.
Grant watched.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Because the scene in front of him was everything he had missed.
First steps.
First words.
First moments.
A lifetime that existed without him.
Lucas stood beside him quietly.
"Grant."
He didn't answer.
"Are you okay?"
Grant looked at the child.
"No."
It was the first honest answer he had given in a long time.
Emma noticed his expression.
She slowly released Noah.
"Noah, this is..."
She stopped.
How could she introduce him?
How could she explain a father who didn't know he existed?
A man who had spent eleven months living without him?
Noah looked at Grant.
His eyes studied him.
Then the boy asked:
"Are you him?"
Grant swallowed.
"Who?"
Noah looked at Emma.
"The man in the picture."
Grant looked at Emma.
"What picture?"
Emma froze.
Noah continued.
"The one Mom kept."
Grant's heart tightened.
Emma looked uncomfortable.
"Noah..."
The boy reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small folded paper.
Emma immediately recognized it.
"Noah, where did you get that?"
The boy handed it to Grant.
He opened it.
A drawing.
A child’s drawing.
Three people.
A woman.
A little boy.
And a man standing far away.
Above the man were two words.
"My Dad."
Grant stared at it.
His fingers trembled slightly.
"Who gave him this?"
Emma looked at Lucas.
Nobody answered.
Then a voice came from the speakers.
Victor.
"Beautiful, isn't it?"
Everyone turned toward the cameras.
Victor's voice continued.
"I always wondered when Grant would finally see it."
Grant stepped forward.
"Where are you?"
No answer.
"Victor!"
The speakers remained silent for several seconds.
Then Victor laughed softly.
"You sound angry."
"You used my child."
"No."
Victor's voice became colder.
"I protected your child."
Emma looked furious.
"You stole him from us."
Victor ignored her.
"Grant, you need to understand something."
The screen behind them turned on.
Victor appeared.
Standing in another room.
Calm.
Perfectly dressed.
Like he was attending a business meeting.
"You think I am the villain because I kept secrets."
Grant stared at him.
"You kidnapped my son."
Victor shook his head.
"I saved him from becoming a target."
Emma stepped closer to the screen.
"You don't get to pretend you protected him."
Victor looked at her.
"Emma."
His expression changed.
Not anger.
Almost disappointment.
"You always were emotional."
Grant immediately noticed.
Emma reacted.
She hated him.
Not because of what he said.
Because she had heard it before.
Victor continued.
"You had one job."
Emma froze.
"Keep Noah hidden."
Grant looked at her.
"You knew?"
Emma looked away.
Victor smiled.
"Of course she knew."
Grant turned toward the screen.
"What are you talking about?"
Victor leaned back.
"Ask her."
Silence.
Emma looked at Grant.
"Grant..."
His expression changed.
"Ask her what?"
Victor answered.
"Ask her why she disappeared before she ever told you about Noah."
Grant looked at Emma.
The question hurt.
Because he had wondered.
But he never asked.
Not directly.
Emma lowered her eyes.
"I wanted to tell you."
"But you didn't."
"No."
"Why?"
She didn't answer.
Victor did.
"Because Emma knew something about you."
Grant looked at the screen.
"What?"
Victor smiled.
"Something even you didn't know."
Emma closed her eyes.
"Stop."
But Victor continued.
"She knew about your condition."
Grant froze.
"My what?"
Nobody spoke.
Lucas looked at Emma.
Even he looked surprised.
Grant turned slowly.
"What is he talking about?"
Emma looked devastated.
"Grant..."
"No."
His voice became cold.
"I want the truth."
Victor smiled.
"Finally."
The screen changed.
A medical file appeared.
Grant's name.
His information.
His history.
He stared.
"This isn't real."
Emma whispered:
"It is."
Grant looked at her.
"What?"
Her eyes filled with regret.
"Before Noah was born..."
She stopped.
Then continued.
"Doctors found something."
Grant's face changed.
"What?"
"A genetic condition."
Silence.
Victor watched.
"Your family knew."
Grant looked confused.
"My family?"
"Your father."
The room became colder.
Victor continued.
"He paid doctors to keep it hidden."
Grant shook his head.
"No."
Emma looked at him.
"He was afraid."
"Of what?"
She answered quietly.
"That people would see you as weak."
Grant looked away.
His entire life was built around proving he was stronger than everyone else.
And now he was learning that the people closest to him had hidden the truth.
Victor continued.
"And when Emma became pregnant, your father made sure the child was tested."
Grant looked at Noah.
The boy was holding Emma's hand.
"What happened?"
Emma answered.
"Noah was healthy."
Grant looked relieved for a second.
Then confused.
"Then why hide him?"
Victor smiled.
"Because Noah was proof."
"Proof of what?"
Victor leaned closer to the camera.
"That Grant Maddox could have something more important than his company."
Grant stared.
Victor continued.
"And powerful people hate losing control."
The screen suddenly flickered.
A new image appeared.
A document.
A signature.
Grant looked closer.
His blood went cold.
Because the signature at the bottom belonged to him.
But the date was from eleven months ago.
The day Emma disappeared.
The day Noah was born.
Emma saw the document.
Her face changed.
"No."
Grant looked at her.
"What is it?"
She stepped backward.
Because she recognized the paper.
It was the agreement she thought had been destroyed.
The one that changed everything.
Grant looked at the title.
"Custody Transfer Agreement."
His hands tightened.
"Why is my signature on this?"
Nobody answered.
Then the final line appeared on the screen.
The person who signed away his rights...
Was not Grant Maddox.
It was someone using his identity.
May you like
And below the signature was one name.
Emma Carter.
