Chapter 7 - The House Where The Truth Was Hidden

The photograph stayed on Grant Maddox’s phone screen.

A child.

A gun.

A message.

"Come alone, or the child disappears."

For the first time in years, Grant felt powerless.

Money could solve problems.

Influence could open doors.

His name could make people move.

But none of those things mattered when someone threatened a child he had never met.

A child who was his.

Emma watched his face change.

She knew.

Not because he said anything.

Because she had seen that same expression before.

The moment when someone realized the world they believed in was not real.

"Grant."

He looked at her.

"Where is the house?"

Emma shook her head immediately.

"No."

His eyes hardened.

"I need to go."

"You don't understand."

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"I don't."

He looked at the picture again.

"But I know there is a child in danger."

Emma stepped closer.

"And that is exactly what they want."

Grant looked confused.

"What?"

"They want you emotional."

"I am supposed to be emotional."

"No."

Her voice became stronger.

"They want you to stop thinking."

The words made him pause.

Because she was right.

Someone who had spent eleven months hiding knew how dangerous panic could be.

Grant looked at Lucas.

"You know where the house is."

Lucas didn't answer.

"Lucas."

The man remained silent.

Emma looked at him.

"Tell him."

Lucas looked between them.

Then he sighed.

"It isn't that simple."

Grant stared.

"What does that mean?"

"It means the house is not just a house."

Lucas walked toward the table.

"It was a safe location."

"For who?"

"For Arthur."

Grant frowned.

"Arthur was hiding there?"

Lucas nodded.

"He knew someone inside Maddox Global was watching him."

Emma looked at the phone.

"And now they found it."

Silence.

Grant looked at Lucas.

"How did Victor know?"

Nobody answered.

That bothered him.

"How did he know?"

Lucas looked down.

"Because someone helped him."

"Who?"

Lucas hesitated.

Then said:

"Someone close to Emma."

Emma's face changed.

"No."

Grant noticed.

"You know who?"

She looked away.

"Emma."

Her voice became quieter.

"There was only one person who knew where I was going."

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

Lucas did.

"Arthur."

Grant froze.

"But Arthur was protecting her."

"Yes."

"Then how?"

Lucas looked at him.

"Because Arthur wasn't the only person with access to the information."

Grant understood.

Someone had followed Arthur.

Someone had followed Emma.

Someone had been waiting.

Emma took the phone from Grant.

The picture was still there.

The child stood outside the house.

She touched the screen.

A mother looking at her child from a distance.

A child who didn't know she was being watched.

"His name is Noah."

Grant looked at her.

The name felt strange.

But important.

"Noah."

Emma nodded.

"He was born healthy."

Her voice became softer.

"He smiled all the time."

Grant looked at her.

"You saw him?"

"Every day."

"Then why wasn't I there?"

Emma looked down.

Because there was no easy answer.

"Because someone made sure you never knew."

Grant's expression changed.

"Who?"

Emma looked at him.

"Victor."

He wanted to deny it.

But he couldn't.

Not anymore.

Too many things connected back to the same person.

"Take me there."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

"Emma."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"If Victor wants you alone, it's a trap."

"I know."

"Then why?"

Grant looked at her.

"Because if that child is mine, I won't let someone use him as a weapon."

The words surprised her.

Not because they were dramatic.

Because they sounded honest.

For a moment, Emma saw the man behind the billionaire.

Not the person who laughed at a waitress.

Not the person who believed he controlled everything.

A father who had just learned his child was afraid somewhere without him.

Lucas watched them.

Then he spoke.

"We don't go to the house."

Grant looked at him.

"What?"

"We go somewhere else first."

"Why?"

"Because if Victor expects you there, he is watching the road."

Lucas picked up his jacket.

"We need to find out who sent the message."

Grant nodded.

"How?"

Lucas looked at Emma.

"With the one person who knows Victor better than anyone."

Emma immediately understood.

"No."

Grant looked at her.

"Who?"

Emma's face became pale.

"My old assistant."

"Your assistant?"

She nodded.

"Before I disappeared."

"Where is she?"

Emma looked away.

"Dead."

Silence.

Lucas corrected her.

"That is what everyone believes."

Grant looked at him.

"Another person who isn't dead?"

Lucas didn't smile.

"People in this story have a habit of disappearing."

Emma closed her eyes.

"Her name was Rachel."

Grant noticed something.

The way Emma said the name.

Not with sadness.

With guilt.

"What happened?"

Emma didn't answer.

Lucas did.

"Rachel found out someone was altering company records."

"Victor?"

"She thought so."

"What happened?"

Lucas looked at Emma.

"She contacted Emma the night before the child was born."

Grant looked at Emma.

"And?"

Emma whispered:

"She never arrived."

The room became quiet.

Grant looked at Lucas.

"You're saying Rachel disappeared too?"

Lucas nodded.

"But unlike Arthur..."

He stopped.

"Unlike Arthur what?"

Lucas looked at Emma.

"We found evidence she survived."

Emma looked shocked.

"What?"

Lucas pulled out his phone.

He opened an old file.

A security image.

A woman entering a building.

Emma moved closer.

Her breathing stopped.

"Rachel."

Grant looked at the picture.

"When was this taken?"

Lucas answered:

"Three days ago."

Emma stared.

Three days.

Someone she believed was gone.

Alive.

Again.

Grant noticed a pattern.

Everyone who knew the truth disappeared.

Everyone except Emma.

"Where is she?"

Lucas showed the address.

Emma immediately recognized it.

"No."

Grant looked at her.

"What?"

She stepped back.

"That place."

"What about it?"

Her face turned pale.

"It's where Victor keeps his private records."

Grant looked at the address.

A building owned by Maddox Global.

"Then we go there."

Emma grabbed his arm.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because Rachel wouldn't be there unless..."

She stopped.

Grant waited.

"Unless what?"

Emma looked at the picture again.

Then she whispered:

"Unless she wanted us to find her."

A strange silence followed.

Lucas checked his phone.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

Emma looked at him.

"Lucas."

He turned the screen toward them.

A new message.

From Rachel.

Only three words.

"Trust nobody here."

Grant frowned.

"Here?"

Then another message arrived.

This time with an image.

A security camera photo.

The image showed Rachel sitting inside a room.

Alive.

But behind her was someone standing.

Someone watching her.

Someone Grant recognized immediately.

His face changed.

Because the person standing behind Rachel was the one person he never suspected.

And the message below the photo said:

"He has always known where Noah is."
