Chapter 9 - The Doctor Who Hid the Truth

A man pointed at Adrian and whispered: "You were there when her mother died." When Mara opened the hidden video file, she discovered an old recording showing Adrian standing beside the killer. Three words appeared on the screen: "Doctor knew everything." Mara finally realized the person who protected her had been hiding the biggest secret.
The emergency room door unlocked.
Slowly.
Nobody moved.
Everyone was staring at Adrian.
The man who had saved thousands of lives.
The man who had held my hand when I lost my mother.
The man who had always told me I was safe.
And now...
He was standing inside a memory that had destroyed my entire life.
"No."
The word came from my mouth before I could stop it.
Adrian looked at me.
His face was broken.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Just broken.
"Mara."
I stepped away.
"Tell me it's not true."
Silence.
That was worse than any answer.
My father looked at Adrian.
"You were there."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Yes."
The room changed.
Everything changed.
My mother covered her mouth.
Vincent looked away.
Victor Kane smiled.
Because he had been waiting for this moment.
"Finally."
His voice was calm.
"The truth comes out."
I turned toward him.
"You knew?"
Victor looked at me.
"I knew everything."
My fists tightened.
"Then why show me now?"
He smiled.
"Because Adrian was always the last person you would suspect."
I looked at Adrian.
And somehow that hurt more than anything else.
Because Victor was right.
If my father lied, I expected it.
If Vincent hid something, I expected it.
But Adrian?
The man who taught me how to become a nurse.
The man who stayed beside me after my first failed surgery.
The man who told me I reminded him of my mother.
I never expected him.
"What happened that night?"
My voice was quiet.
Adrian didn't answer.
"Please."
He looked at me.
And I saw tears in his eyes.
Twenty years.
Twenty years of silence.
Finally breaking.
"I arrived after the attack."
My breathing slowed.
"After?"
He nodded.
"I heard the gunshots."
My mother looked at him.
"You didn't tell her."
Adrian looked down.
"I couldn't."
"Why?"
His voice cracked.
"Because when I arrived..."
He stopped.
I waited.
"When I arrived, your mother was alive."
The room froze.
My heart stopped.
"What?"
My father looked at him.
"You said she was gone."
"I lied."
My mother closed her eyes.
I stared at Adrian.
"Why?"
He looked at me.
"Because she asked me to."
The words didn't make sense.
"My mother asked you to lie?"
Adrian nodded.
"She knew someone would come back."
"Who?"
He looked at Victor.
Victor's smile disappeared.
Adrian continued.
"She knew the person behind everything wasn't finished."
I looked at my mother.
"You knew?"
She nodded slowly.
"I knew someone was watching."
"Then why leave me?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I had to disappear."
The anger inside me fought with the pain.
"You all keep saying that."
I shook my head.
"You had to disappear."
"You had to protect me."
"You had to hide."
"But nobody ever asked what I had to go through."
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing they could say.
Adrian stepped forward.
"I am sorry."
I laughed quietly.
"I don't want an apology."
He stopped.
"I want the truth."
He nodded.
"You deserve it."
Victor suddenly interrupted.
"Careful, doctor."
Everyone looked at him.
"Some truths destroy people."
My father moved toward him.
"You don't get to talk about truth."
Victor smiled.
"Why?"
He looked at my father.
"Because you still haven't told her what you did."
My father's expression changed.
I turned.
"What is he talking about?"
My father said nothing.
Again.
Another secret.
Another silence.
I felt exhausted.
"Tell me."
He looked at me.
"Mara..."
"No."
My voice became stronger.
"I am done being protected."
My father looked at the floor.
Then finally spoke.
"Your father was the one who created the system they wanted."
I stared at him.
"What system?"
"The system that erased identities."
The room became quiet.
"The system that made people disappear."
My father continued.
"I created it to protect people."
Victor laughed.
"That is what you tell yourself."
My father ignored him.
"But someone changed it."
I looked at Vincent.
"And you?"
Vincent looked away.
"I helped him."
The answer hurt.
Everyone had a role.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone had been part of a story I never knew existed.
Then my phone vibrated.
Everyone looked.
A message.
From my mother's old number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
I knew who killed me.
My blood froze.
My mother looked at the screen.
And her face changed.
Because she knew what came next.
Another message arrived.
This time, there was an attachment.
A photo.
I opened it.
The picture showed my childhood home.
The same house from the video.
But this photo was different.
It was taken tonight.
Recently.
My hands started shaking.
Because someone had been watching that house.
The message below appeared.
He is still inside.
I looked at my mother.
"What does this mean?"
She didn't answer.
She was staring behind me.
Not at the phone.
At the emergency room door.
The door that had slowly opened earlier.
The door nobody had checked.
My father noticed her expression.
"Mara."
I turned.
"What?"
My mother whispered:
"Don't move."
Everyone froze.
Because from the other side of the door...
someone was breathing.
Slowly.
Patiently.
Waiting.
Adrian stepped in front of me.
His voice became almost silent.
"Whoever is there..."
May you like
The handle moved.
And my mother whispered the name of the person standing outside...
