Chapter 11 - The Brother Who Never Existed

A man stepped from the shadows and whispered: "Mara, you finally remember me." When Adrian opened the forgotten family archive, he found a birth certificate hidden beneath Daniel Vale’s records. Three words were written across the document: "Second child found." Adrian finally realized Mara’s past had been erased for a reason.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The man standing under the emergency light looked at me like he had been waiting twenty years for this exact moment.
I stared at his face.
I knew him.
Not from photographs.
Not from memories.
From somewhere deeper.
A place inside me that had been locked away.
My father took one step forward.
"No."
The man's expression didn't change.
"Hello, Daniel."
My father's voice became cold.
"You shouldn't be here."
The stranger smiled.
"Neither should you."
I looked between them.
My heart was beating too fast.
"Who is he?"
Nobody answered.
Again.
That silence.
That horrible silence.
I was tired of being the only person who didn't know the truth about my own life.
I looked at Adrian.
"Tell me."
Adrian stared at the man.
His face was pale.
"Mara..."
"Tell me."
He swallowed.
"His name is Lucas Vale."
The room went completely still.
My father's expression changed.
My mother covered her mouth.
Vincent Morel looked away.
Even Elias Voss seemed surprised.
I whispered:
"Vale?"
Lucas looked at me.
"Yes."
My breathing became uneven.
"No."
My father stepped forward.
"Mara, listen to me."
I looked at him.
"Who is he?"
Nobody answered.
Lucas did.
"I'm your brother."
The words didn't feel real.
A brother.
A person who didn't exist.
A person who was never mentioned.
A person who had somehow been hidden from me my entire life.
I laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
"No."
Lucas looked hurt.
"I know this is difficult."
"No."
I shook my head.
"My parents had one child."
My mother started crying.
And that was when I knew.
Because my mother never cried when people lied.
She cried when people told the truth.
"You knew."
My voice was almost gone.
She nodded.
"Mara..."
"You knew I had a brother."
She closed her eyes.
"Yes."
The room blurred.
I felt betrayed in a way I couldn't explain.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
Like discovering an entire room existed inside your own house.
A room everyone entered except you.
"Why?"
My mother looked at Lucas.
Then at me.
"Because they were looking for both of you."
I frowned.
"Both?"
Lucas stepped closer.
"They weren't after you because you saw something."
He looked at me.
"They were after you because you were the proof."
I didn't understand.
"What proof?"
Lucas looked at Daniel.
"Tell her."
My father stayed silent.
Lucas's expression hardened.
"Tell her what happened before the night everything changed."
My father looked exhausted.
Like he had carried this weight for too long.
"Before Mara was born..."
He stopped.
My heart sank.
Before I was born.
There was more.
"There was an experiment."
Adrian looked down.
"The identity system."
I nodded slowly.
"The one you created."
My father nodded.
"But before it became what it was..."
He looked at Lucas.
"It was designed to protect people."
Lucas continued.
"People like us."
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
He took a breath.
"It means our family wasn't normal."
My father looked angry.
"Don't."
Lucas ignored him.
"It means our parents discovered something powerful people wanted hidden."
"What?"
"The ability to erase a person's entire existence."
The room went quiet.
Lucas continued.
"Not just records."
"Not just names."
"Everything."
I looked at Adrian.
"The memory program."
He nodded slowly.
"Yes."
My stomach tightened.
"They used it on me."
Lucas looked at me.
"Because you were the only one who saw the original file."
I closed my eyes.
Another memory appeared.
Not the house.
Not the attack.
Something else.
A room.
A computer screen.
My father's voice.
A child beside me.
Lucas.
We were younger.
He was holding my hand.
"Don't be scared."
The memory disappeared.
I opened my eyes.
"You were there."
Lucas nodded.
"Yes."
I looked at him.
"Why don't I remember you?"
His expression broke.
"Because they made you forget me."
My mother stepped closer.
"They made everyone forget."
I looked at her.
"What?"
She looked at Lucas.
"After the attack, they couldn't find him."
Lucas explained.
"So they created a story."
My father continued.
"One child."
"One family."
"One identity."
I felt sick.
"They erased him."
Nobody answered.
Because that was exactly what happened.
My entire life had been built on missing pieces.
Adrian walked toward the old archive cabinet.
"I need to show her something."
My father looked at him.
"No."
Adrian opened the drawer.
"This ends tonight."
Inside was a small black folder.
Different from the others.
Older.
More damaged.
He placed it on the table.
My name was written on it.
But underneath...
There was another name.
Lucas Vale.
I looked at Adrian.
"Why do you have this?"
He looked ashamed.
"Because I was the one who helped hide it."
My heart sank.
"Again?"
He nodded.
"I thought I was protecting both of you."
Lucas opened the folder.
Inside was a document.
A list of names.
People involved.
People who had controlled everything.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
Because one name was familiar.
A name I had seen before.
A name that should not have been there.
Adrian Cole.
I looked up.
The room became silent.
Adrian didn't deny it.
"Explain."
His face changed.
"Mara..."
"No."
My voice shook.
"Not another secret."
He looked at the document.
"I wasn't part of them."
"Then why is your name there?"
Before Adrian could answer, the hospital lights flickered.
Everyone turned.
Another message appeared on every screen in the emergency room.
A file had been uploaded.
No sender.
No location.
Just one title.
THE FINAL WITNESS.
The file opened automatically.
A video appeared.
A younger Adrian stood inside my childhood home.
My mother was crying.
My father was holding a suitcase.
And behind them...
was a little girl.
Not me.
Another girl.
A girl who looked exactly like me.
The recording continued.
My younger mother whispered:
"She cannot know she has a twin."
The video stopped.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I looked at my mother.
My voice barely came out.
"Twin?"
May you like
And then the emergency room door opened behind us...
and a little girl’s voice whispered my name.
