Chapter 10 - The Man Who Was Inside the House

A shadow stood behind the hospital door and whispered: "Mara, you should have remembered me sooner." When Adrian opened the final security file, he found a hidden photograph of the night Mara’s mother disappeared. Three words were written on the back: "I was there." Adrian finally realized the person who destroyed Mara’s family had never left.

The door opened.

Slowly.

Nobody breathed.

The man standing outside didn't rush in.

He didn't need to.

He already knew everyone inside was afraid.

The emergency room lights reflected across his face.

And the moment I saw him...

I remembered.

Not everything.

Just pieces.

A hallway.

A broken lamp.

My mother's scream.

A man's hand holding my shoulder.

A voice telling me to stay quiet.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

My mother noticed.

"Mara."

I looked at her.

"You know him."

She didn't answer.

The man outside smiled.

"She always was smart."

My father stepped forward.

"Stay away from her."

The stranger laughed softly.

"Still pretending you are her protector?"

My father's expression hardened.

"You don't know anything."

The man tilted his head.

"Actually, Daniel..."

He looked directly at me.

"I know everything."

I felt a chill.

"Who are you?"

The man stepped into the room.

Adrian immediately raised his hand.

"Don't move."

The stranger stopped.

Then smiled.

"Doctor Cole."

Adrian froze.

The man looked around.

"You still wear the same expression."

"What expression?"

"The expression of someone who knows he made the wrong choice."

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Adrian.

Again.

Another person who knew him.

Another person who knew my story.

"Tell me."

My voice was quiet.

Everyone looked at me.

"Who is he?"

Adrian swallowed.

"His name is Elias Voss."

The name meant nothing to me.

But my mother reacted.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

"You know him."

My mother closed her eyes.

"Yes."

My heart sank.

"Of course you do."

Elias looked at her.

"You told her nothing."

My mother stepped forward.

"I was trying to save her."

Elias smiled.

"That excuse again."

My father moved toward him.

"What do you want?"

Elias looked at him.

"The same thing I wanted twenty years ago."

Nobody moved.

"The evidence."

Vincent Morel spoke from the bed.

"You never found it."

Elias looked at him.

"And you never stopped looking."

Vincent's face became serious.

I looked between them.

"What evidence?"

Nobody answered.

I raised my voice.

"What evidence?"

My father finally spoke.

"The evidence that proves who controls everything."

I frowned.

"Everything?"

Adrian nodded.

"The people who erase identities."

"The people who can make someone disappear."

"The people who can destroy anyone without leaving a trace."

I looked at Elias.

"And he works for them?"

Silence.

That silence was enough.

Elias smiled.

"I did."

My mother looked at him.

"You destroyed everything."

His smile faded.

"No."

He looked at me.

"Your mother did."

The room went silent.

My father stepped forward.

"Don't."

Elias ignored him.

"Your mother discovered the truth."

He looked at me.

"And instead of exposing it..."

He paused.

"She made a deal."

I looked at my mother.

Her face was full of pain.

"Mom?"

She whispered.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

"What deal?"

Nobody answered.

Elias walked closer.

My father blocked him.

"Stop."

Elias looked at him.

"She deserves to know."

My father's hands tightened.

"You don't get to decide that."

Elias smiled.

"You decided everything for twenty years."

The words hit hard.

Because they were true.

Everyone had decided.

Except me.

I stepped between them.

"Tell me."

My mother looked at me.

"Mara..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I need to know."

She looked broken.

Finally, she nodded.

"Twenty years ago..."

She took a breath.

"I found out your father created something."

I looked at him.

"The identity system?"

She nodded.

"But it wasn't meant to hurt people."

My father spoke.

"It was designed to protect witnesses."

Adrian added quietly:

"People who were in danger."

My mother continued.

"But someone changed it."

Elias smiled.

"Someone realized controlling identities meant controlling lives."

I looked at him.

"And you?"

His face became cold.

"I was sent to retrieve the files."

"By who?"

He didn't answer.

That scared me.

Because every person in the room knew the name.

Except me.

My mother reached for my hand.

"Before everything happened, I hid the evidence."

"Where?"

She looked at me.

"Inside the only place they would never search."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She looked toward my head.

My blood went cold.

"No."

Adrian understood immediately.

"Mara."

I stepped away.

"What?"

My mother started crying.

"They changed your memory."

The room became silent.

"Not completely."

She continued.

"They removed the details."

I touched my temple.

Suddenly, the old memories returned.

Not as pictures.

As feelings.

The smell of smoke.

The sound of glass breaking.

My mother's hands shaking.

And a small object pressed into my palm.

"Never let them take this."

I looked at my mother.

"What did you hide?"

She didn't answer.

Because someone else did.

Elias.

"The final file."

My father looked at him.

"How do you know?"

Elias smiled.

"Because I was there when she hid it."

I turned toward him.

"You were inside the house."

He nodded.

The room froze.

My memory shifted.

The shadow in the hallway.

The voice.

The hand.

The face I couldn't remember.

I stared at Elias.

"You."

He smiled.

"Yes."

My mother stepped forward.

"Mara, listen to me."

But I wasn't listening anymore.

Because the memory was coming back.

The person standing beside my mother.

The person she begged.

The person she trusted.

Wasn't Elias.

My eyes moved slowly toward another person in the room.

Someone who had been silent.

Someone who had been there from the beginning.

Someone who knew every secret.

My voice barely came out.

"It wasn't him."

Everyone looked at me.

I pointed toward the corner.

"It was someone else."

Adrian's face changed.

"What did you remember?"

I couldn't answer.

Because the person from my memory had just moved.

And when he stepped into the red emergency light...

I saw the same face I had seen twenty years ago.

Standing there.

May you like

Alive.

My father whispered his name...
