Chapter 3 - The Secret My Father Took to His Grave

A woman in a hospital gown grabbed my arm and whispered: "Run before they find you." When I followed Adrian into the abandoned medical storage room, he discovered an old patient file hidden behind a broken cabinet. Five words were written across the cover: "Mara Vale was never dead." Adrian finally realized someone had been rewriting my entire life.
I stared at the message on the phone.
Mara Vale is alive.
The words didn't make sense.
Not because they were impossible.
Because they were terrifying.
Someone knew my name.
Someone knew I was here.
And someone wanted everyone to know that I wasn't supposed to be alive.
"Who sent this?" I asked.
Adrian didn't answer.
He kept staring at the screen.
Like he had seen a ghost.
"Doctor."
His fingers tightened around the phone.
"Mara, you need to leave."
I almost laughed.
"Leave?"
I looked around the emergency room.
"My entire life just turned into a lie, and your advice is for me to walk away?"
Adrian looked at the patient.
Then at me.
"No."
His voice became quieter.
"My advice is for you to survive."
The mafia boss opened his eyes again.
His breathing was weak.
But his voice was clear enough.
"Too late."
Everyone turned toward him.
The patient looked at Adrian.
"They already know."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Who?"
The man closed his eyes.
"The same people who killed her mother."
The room froze.
My fingers went numb.
"No."
The patient looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice cracked.
"My mother died in a robbery."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the three people in that room knew the truth.
And I was the only person who didn't.
Adrian looked away.
That was when I understood.
He knew.
He had always known.
"You knew."
My voice was barely above a whisper.
Adrian didn't deny it.
"Mara..."
"You knew something about my mother."
His silence was the answer.
I stepped back.
"How long?"
He looked at me.
"Since before you started working here."
My chest tightened.
"You hired me because of her."
"No."
"Then why?"
Adrian looked at the patient.
"Because I promised your father I would protect you."
The world stopped.
My father.
That word felt strange.
Almost unreal.
I had spent years hearing people say he was gone.
A man who disappeared before I was old enough to remember his voice.
A man without photographs.
Without friends.
Without a history.
A man my mother never talked about.
"You knew my father?"
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Who was he?"
The surgeon looked at the floor.
"His name was Daniel Vale."
I waited.
But Adrian said nothing else.
"That's it?"
"Mara..."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You don't get to give me one name after twenty years of silence."
My hands were shaking.
"I deserve the truth."
The mafia boss moved slightly.
"She does."
Adrian looked at him.
"You should be resting."
The man smiled weakly.
"You spent years protecting a secret that was never yours to keep."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Careful."
The patient ignored him.
"Your father wasn't just a man who disappeared."
I looked at him.
"What was he?"
The patient stared at the ceiling.
"He was the reason I survived."
A memory flashed through my mind.
My mother's voice.
A sentence I had forgotten.
"Some people don't die, Mara. They disappear because they are protecting someone."
At eight years old, I thought it was something adults said to make children feel better.
Now I wasn't sure.
Adrian walked toward the door.
"Both of you need answers."
He looked at me.
"But this is not the place."
I followed him.
"Where are we going?"
"Somewhere nobody knows about."
The patient tried to sit up.
The nurses rushed forward.
"Sir, you cannot move."
He ignored them.
"If you take her there, they will find you."
Adrian stopped.
"Who?"
The patient's eyes became serious.
"The person who ordered the attack tonight."
A cold silence filled the room.
I looked at the patient.
"You were attacked?"
He nodded.
"Because I was coming here."
"Why?"
His eyes moved toward me.
"Because your father left something behind."
My heart started racing.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
Adrian did.
"A record."
"What kind of record?"
"A record that can destroy powerful people."
I stared at him.
"And my father trusted you with it?"
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Where is it?"
Before Adrian could respond, the lights in the emergency room flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every monitor went black.
The nurses screamed.
The backup lights turned on.
Red emergency lighting filled the room.
The mafia boss immediately looked toward the hallway.
His face changed.
"What?"
I whispered.
He didn't answer.
Adrian reached into his coat.
For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
"Everyone stay away from the door."
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Someone wasn't running.
Someone wasn't hiding.
They were walking like they owned the hospital.
The armed men outside started shouting.
Then silence.
Complete silence.
The patient grabbed my hand.
His strength surprised me.
"Mara."
I looked at him.
"If he gets inside, do not believe anything he says."
My breathing stopped.
"Who?"
The door handle moved.
Everyone froze.
Adrian raised his voice.
"Stay back."
The handle turned slowly.
The lock clicked.
May you like
The door opened.
And standing on the other side was the man who had been declared dead twenty years ago...
