Chapter 8 - The Voice Behind the Locked Door

A man outside the emergency room whispered: "Mara, you finally remembered me." When Adrian unlocked the old hospital archive, he found a hidden recording from twenty years ago labeled with Daniel Vale’s name. Three words were written beneath the file: "Do not trust." Adrian finally realized the person hunting Mara had been inside their lives all along.

I couldn't move.

The voice from the speaker filled the room.

A voice I had spent years trying to forget.

Not because I remembered the face.

Because I remembered the fear.

My hands started shaking.

My mother noticed.

"Mara."

I looked at her.

"You know him."

Her lips parted.

But no words came out.

That was the answer.

She knew.

My father stepped forward.

"Everyone stay away from the door."

Victor Kane laughed quietly.

"Still giving orders, Daniel?"

My father ignored him.

"Adrian, get Mara out."

Adrian didn't move.

Because he was looking at me.

Waiting.

Like he knew something inside me had just broken open.

The speaker crackled again.

"Mara."

The man's voice became softer.

Almost gentle.

"You don't have to be afraid anymore."

I closed my eyes.

A memory came.

Not a dream.

Not imagination.

A memory.

I was eight years old.

I was hiding behind the stairs.

My mother was crying.

My father was shouting.

And another man was standing in the hallway.

I couldn't see his face.

But I remembered his voice.

"Give me the girl."

My breathing stopped.

I opened my eyes.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

My mother stepped closer.

"What did you remember?"

I looked toward the door.

"The night my father disappeared..."

My voice shook.

"He wasn't alone."

My father froze.

"What?"

"There was another man."

The room became silent.

Victor's expression changed.

For the first time, he looked nervous.

Adrian noticed.

"You know who it was."

Victor didn't answer.

Adrian stepped closer.

"You know."

The door speaker activated again.

The man's voice returned.

"You were always smarter than they gave you credit for, Adrian."

Everyone turned.

Adrian's face went pale.

I stared at him.

"You know him too?"

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

"How many people have been lying to me?"

Nobody spoke.

My father looked at me.

"Mara..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Don't."

I pointed toward everyone in the room.

"My whole life, everyone decided what I could handle."

My voice cracked.

"Everyone decided what I should know."

I looked at my mother.

"You let me think you were dead."

Then my father.

"You let me think you abandoned me."

Then Adrian.

"You watched me work beside you while knowing my entire life was fake."

Adrian looked devastated.

"I was trying to protect you."

I laughed bitterly.

"That sentence again."

The door suddenly shook.

Everyone turned.

Someone outside hit it.

Once.

Twice.

The armed men outside shouted.

Then silence.

Vincent Morel looked toward the door.

"He's alone."

My father looked at him.

"That's impossible."

Vincent shook his head.

"No."

His expression became serious.

"That's what makes him dangerous."

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Everyone reached for something.

Adrian grabbed a surgical instrument.

My father moved in front of me.

Vincent tried to stand.

My mother whispered:

"Please don't open it."

Nobody touched the door.

Then a piece of paper slid underneath.

A small white envelope.

My name was written on it.

MARA.

I stared at it.

Nobody moved.

Finally, Adrian picked it up.

"Don't."

My mother grabbed his arm.

Her voice was filled with fear.

"Don't open that."

Adrian looked at her.

"Why?"

She whispered:

"Because he knows what happened."

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

He looked at it.

Then his face changed.

He handed it to me.

I didn't want to take it.

But I did.

The photograph was old.

Damaged.

But clear enough.

It showed my childhood home.

The night my mother disappeared.

My father standing outside.

Adrian beside him.

Vincent Morel near the car.

And another person.

A person whose face had been scratched out.

On the back of the photo was a sentence.

My hands trembled as I read it.

The person you trusted most was the one who betrayed you.

I looked up.

Everyone was staring at me.

"Who is this?"

Nobody answered.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A video appeared.

Recorded twenty years ago.

My finger hovered over the screen.

My mother whispered:

"Mara, don't watch it."

But it was too late.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my childhood home.

The camera was hidden.

Someone had been recording that night.

I saw my mother.

I saw my father.

I saw Adrian.

Then another person entered the room.

A man whose face was hidden in the darkness.

The younger version of my mother turned toward him.

And said:

"You promised me you would never hurt my daughter."

The man stepped closer.

The video quality was poor.

But his voice was clear.

"That depends on whether Daniel gives me what I want."

My father looked at the screen.

His face lost all color.

Because he recognized him.

The man moved closer to the camera.

Closer.

And then the recording captured his face.

The room went completely silent.

Because the person in the video was not a stranger.

It was someone who had been standing beside me for years.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had always told me he was protecting me.

Adrian whispered:

"No..."

The video stopped.

And the final frame showed the person turning toward the camera, smiling directly at eight-year-old me...

while the emergency room door behind us slowly unlocked from the outside.
