Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the Dead Man’s Name

A woman appeared on the hospital security screen and whispered: "Tell Mara I never left." When Adrian checked the old surveillance archive, he found a recording from the night Mara’s mother disappeared. Three words were written on the file: "She survived too." Adrian finally realized the truth was bigger than one missing person.

I stared at the message.

I AM STILL HERE.

My mother's name was still glowing on my phone screen.

My fingers went numb.

Impossible.

That was the only word my mind could create.

Impossible.

My mother had been gone for twenty years.

I remembered the funeral.

I remembered the black dress.

I remembered the adults whispering around me.

I remembered holding Adrian's hand because I was too young to understand why everyone looked at me with pity.

But now...

A message from her phone number appeared in front of me.

A number that should not exist.

A number that belonged to a dead woman.

"Give me the phone."

My father reached toward me.

I stepped back.

"No."

His expression changed.

"Mara."

"No."

I held the phone against my chest.

"Everyone keeps telling me the truth is dangerous."

My voice shook.

"But every time I ask for answers, you all tell me another secret."

Nobody spoke.

"I want to know why."

My father looked away.

For the first time, he looked less like a powerful man who had survived twenty years of hiding.

He looked like a man who had failed the person he loved most.

"Your mother wanted you safe."

I laughed softly.

"Safe?"

I looked at him.

"I grew up without her."

His eyes lowered.

"I know."

"You watched me grow up."

The pain on his face was real.

"I did."

"Then why didn't you come back?"

Silence.

The mafia boss on the bed answered.

"Because someone was watching."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Adrian.

The surgeon understood.

"Not here."

My father nodded.

"He's right."

I became frustrated.

"Of course."

I looked at all three men.

"Another secret location."

Another hidden room.

Another person deciding what I was allowed to know.

But before I could say anything else, the emergency lights suddenly flashed.

Everyone turned.

A loud alarm started from the security system.

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

"That's not a medical alarm."

My father immediately stood.

The nurses stepped back.

"What is happening?"

I asked.

Nobody answered.

That was becoming the most terrifying part.

Everyone knew something except me.

Adrian walked to the security panel beside the door.

He entered a code.

The screen changed.

A camera feed appeared.

The hospital hallway.

Empty.

Then suddenly...

A woman walked past the camera.

My heart stopped.

I couldn't see her face clearly.

But I knew.

Something inside me knew.

The way she walked.

The way she stopped.

The way she touched the wall before continuing.

My father's face turned white.

"No."

I looked at him.

"You know her?"

He didn't answer.

The woman turned toward the camera.

And for one second, her face appeared.

I dropped the phone.

Because the woman on the screen looked exactly like the woman in my childhood memories.

My mother.

Alive.

Adrian immediately grabbed the security controls.

"Lock down the floor."

The system responded.

"Access denied."

He tried again.

Nothing.

"Someone has overridden the security."

My father moved toward the door.

"Where is she?"

Adrian stopped him.

"If that's really her, you don't know who is controlling this."

My father looked at him.

"She is not a threat."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"You don't know that."

The words shocked me.

I looked at Adrian.

"What do you mean?"

He didn't answer.

My father's voice became cold.

"Adrian."

But Adrian continued.

"Twenty years ago, Daniel disappeared."

He looked at me.

"And your mother disappeared the same night."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"So?"

Adrian looked at the security screen.

"Someone wanted us to believe both of them were victims."

The patient on the bed suddenly spoke.

"But one of them wasn't."

Everyone turned.

"What are you saying?"

The mafia boss looked at me.

"I'm saying your mother knew the truth."

My breathing became uneven.

"My mother?"

He nodded.

"She knew who was behind everything."

"And?"

His eyes darkened.

"She made a deal."

The room became silent.

"What deal?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

Then Adrian.

Then the patient.

All three men looked afraid of the same person.

My mother.

The security screen suddenly changed.

The hallway camera went black.

Then a new image appeared.

A live feed.

From inside the emergency room.

Everyone froze.

Because the camera angle was impossible.

It wasn't from the hallway.

It wasn't from the ceiling.

It was from directly behind us.

Someone was already inside the room.

Adrian slowly turned around.

My father reached for something hidden under his jacket.

The mafia boss tried to stand.

And I heard a woman's voice behind me.

A voice I hadn't heard in twenty years.

"Mara..."

May you like

I turned.

And my mother was standing beside the operating table...
