Chapter 7 - The Witness Who Remembered Everything

A stranger pointed a gun at me and whispered: "You were the reason your family fell apart." When Adrian opened the secret archive hidden beneath the hospital, he found a twenty-year-old investigation file with Mara’s name on it. Three words were written across the first page: "The witness survived." Adrian finally realized someone had spent decades trying to erase my memory.
The lights went out.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The only sound in the emergency room was the faint beeping of the machines.
Then the emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Cold.
Like the entire hospital had become a warning.
I stood behind my father, staring at the man who had just entered the room.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
The kind of calm that came from knowing everyone else was already trapped.
My father recognized him.
I saw it immediately.
His face changed.
Not fear.
Something worse.
Regret.
"You."
The man smiled.
"Daniel."
My father's hands tightened.
"You're supposed to be dead."
The stranger laughed quietly.
"So are you."
Nobody spoke.
I looked between them.
Another secret.
Another person who wasn't supposed to exist.
I was tired of ghosts walking back into my life.
"Who is he?"
My voice cut through the silence.
The stranger looked at me.
And smiled.
"She really doesn't remember."
My mother stepped forward.
"Don't talk to her."
He looked at my mother.
"You still protect her."
"Always."
The man's smile disappeared.
"Even after everything you did?"
My mother froze.
I felt my heart drop.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
The stranger looked at me.
"My name is Victor Kane."
The name meant nothing to me.
But Vincent Morel reacted immediately.
His expression turned serious.
"You're the one who started this."
Victor looked at him.
"And you're the one who failed to finish it."
Adrian moved closer.
"Everyone needs to calm down."
Victor laughed.
"Doctor Cole."
Adrian stopped.
The stranger looked around the room.
"You always were the one who wanted to save everyone."
His eyes moved toward me.
"But you couldn't save her."
My stomach tightened.
"Save who?"
Victor didn't answer.
Instead, he reached into his coat.
My father immediately moved.
But Victor only pulled out a small folder.
Old.
Yellowed.
Damaged.
He threw it onto the table.
It landed beside the envelope my mother had left.
"Open it."
Nobody moved.
My mother whispered:
"Mara, don't."
That made me look at her.
"Why?"
She didn't answer.
"Why shouldn't I open it?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because some things can't be forgotten again."
I picked up the folder.
My hands were shaking.
The first page was a photograph.
A younger version of me.
Eight years old.
Standing outside my childhood home.
I looked happy.
Normal.
Like a child who had no idea the world was about to break.
Below the picture were words.
SUBJECT: MARA VALE.
AGE: 8.
STATUS: MEMORY COMPROMISED.
I stopped breathing.
"What is this?"
Adrian took the folder from my hand.
His face became pale.
"Where did you get this?"
Victor smiled.
"From the people who created it."
My father looked at Adrian.
"You knew?"
Adrian didn't answer.
That was enough.
My chest hurt.
"You knew."
Adrian looked at me.
"Mara..."
"No."
I stepped away.
"You knew something was done to me."
His silence was painful.
"I suspected."
"You suspected?"
My voice broke.
"Someone changed my memories, and you suspected?"
Adrian looked destroyed.
"I was trying to find proof."
"While I lived my life not knowing who I was?"
Nobody defended him.
Because there was nothing to say.
My mother stepped toward me.
"Please listen."
I looked at her.
"You too?"
Her face fell.
"I did it to protect you."
"Everyone says that."
My tears started falling.
"Everyone says they hurt me because they wanted to protect me."
The room went quiet.
Victor watched.
Almost enjoying it.
"You see?"
He said softly.
"That is what they do."
I looked at him.
"What do you want?"
His expression changed.
"I want what your father took."
My father looked at him.
"I don't have it."
Victor smiled.
"You do."
The mafia boss suddenly spoke.
"The file."
Everyone looked at him.
Vincent slowly sat up.
"Daniel didn't take it."
Victor looked at him.
"Then why did your wife die?"
The words hit the room like a weapon.
My mother closed her eyes.
My father looked away.
And suddenly I understood.
Whatever this was...
It wasn't about money.
It wasn't about power.
It was about something someone was willing to kill for.
Adrian grabbed the old folder.
He opened the pages quickly.
Then stopped.
"There is something missing."
Victor smiled.
"Of course."
"What?"
"The final page."
Adrian looked at him.
"Where is it?"
Victor looked at me.
My blood turned cold.
"Mara has it."
I shook my head.
"No."
Victor stepped closer.
"You've had it your entire life."
My mother whispered:
"No..."
Victor continued.
"The night your mother disappeared, she hid the last piece of evidence inside the only place nobody would search."
I felt my breathing become uneven.
"Where?"
Victor smiled.
"Inside your memory."
The room went silent.
I looked at my mother.
She looked terrified.
"Mom."
She stepped toward me.
"Mara, don't listen to him."
But I noticed something.
Something small.
Something everyone else missed.
My mother wasn't afraid of Victor.
She was afraid of what I might remember.
Adrian noticed too.
"Mara."
I looked at him.
"When you were eight..."
He stopped.
"What?"
His expression changed.
"You said something after the attack."
My heart raced.
"What did I say?"
Adrian looked at my mother.
Then my father.
Then me.
"You said there was someone else in the house."
I froze.
"What?"
My mother started crying.
"No."
Adrian continued.
"You said the person who attacked your family wasn't a stranger."
I couldn't move.
Because a memory appeared.
A door.
A voice.
A shadow.
A hand covering my mouth.
And a sentence whispered into my ear.
"Forget everything you saw."
My vision blurred.
I grabbed the table.
The emergency room suddenly felt too small.
My father reached for me.
"Mara."
I looked at him.
"I remember."
Everyone froze.
My mother covered her mouth.
"What?"
I closed my eyes.
The memory came back in pieces.
The broken lamp.
The blood on the floor.
My mother screaming.
And the face of the person standing beside her.
I opened my eyes.
"I remember who was there that night."
Victor's smile disappeared.
For the first time.
He looked afraid.
Adrian stepped closer.
"Who?"
I turned toward the door.
Because suddenly I remembered the voice.
The same voice that had whispered my name twenty years ago.
The same voice that had told me to forget.
And then the hospital speaker turned on.
A man's voice filled the emergency room.
"Mara..."
My blood froze.
Because I knew that voice.
May you like
It was the voice from my childhood nightmare.
And the person speaking was standing right outside the locked door...
