Chapter 1 - The Patient Who Was Never Supposed to Survive

A dying man grabbed my wrist on the hospital bed and whispered: "Don't let them know I woke up." When Chief Surgeon Adrian Cole entered the trauma room, he found Mara's blood-stained nurse badge lying beside the mafia patient's gurney. Four words were scratched on the back: "She saved my life." Adrian suddenly realized this wasn't an ordinary emergency case.
The emergency room went silent.
The monitors screamed louder than anyone in the room.
I had spent six years working as a nurse, and I had seen almost everything.
Broken bones. Car accidents. Families crying outside operating rooms. Doctors fighting against impossible odds.
But I had never seen men like them walk through the hospital doors.
They weren't paramedics.
They weren't police officers.
They were men who moved like they owned every hallway they entered.
The first thing I noticed was the blood dripping from the wheels of the gurney.
The second thing I noticed was that every man surrounding the patient looked more afraid than the man lying on the bed.
The patient was unconscious.
But everyone else looked like they were waiting for him to wake up.
"Move!" one of the men shouted.
The emergency room staff stepped aside.
I looked at the patient's face.
A man in his late forties.
Strong features.
A body covered with injuries.
A person who looked like he had survived things most people wouldn't.
"Who is he?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than the blood.
The chief surgeon walked in seconds later.
Dr. Adrian Cole.
The most respected surgeon in the hospital.
The man everyone trusted when a life was slipping away.
He looked at the patient.
Then he looked at the armed men.
His expression changed.
"Everyone leave," Adrian said.
Nobody moved.
"I said leave."
The room became tense.
One of the men stepped forward.
"You don't understand who you're treating."
Adrian didn't even blink.
"I understand exactly who I'm treating."
Then he turned toward me.
"Mara, prepare the operating room."
I nodded.
I tried to focus on my job.
But something about that patient bothered me.
When I checked his pulse, his fingers suddenly moved.
Only for a second.
I looked down.
Nothing.
Maybe I imagined it.
I continued working.
Until I noticed something strange.
His hand was holding something.
A small piece of metal.
I carefully removed it.
It was an old necklace pendant.
Inside was a tiny photograph.
A young woman.
I couldn't see the face clearly.
But Adrian saw it.
And the moment he did, his expression disappeared.
"Where did you get that?" he asked.
I looked confused.
"It was in his hand."
Adrian took the pendant from me.
His hands tightened.
"You don't understand what this means."
Before I could answer, the patient suddenly opened his eyes.
Everyone froze.
His voice was barely audible.
But he looked directly at me.
"Mara..."
My blood went cold.
I stepped back.
Because I had never told him my name.
The chief surgeon stared at me.
Then at the patient.
And the dying mafia boss whispered something only I could hear.
"Your mother was right... they never stopped looking for you."
I couldn't breathe.
Because my mother had been dead for twelve years.
And nobody knew the secret she took to her grave.
Except someone who should have been unconscious on an operating table.
The monitor suddenly flatlined for one second.
May you like
Then the patient grabbed my hand again.
And from the hallway outside, someone shouted my real name...
