Chapter 7 - The Enemy Inside the Empire

Elena opened her mother’s hidden letter beneath the cold light of the underground archive: "Never trust Vincent Moretti." When Vincent Moretti read the next page beside her, he discovered a second warning hidden under Isabella’s handwriting. But one sentence was written differently: "Trust the man who hates himself for what he did." Vincent realized the truth was not about finding a traitor.
It was about finding the person who carried the guilt.
The room remained silent.
Elena stared at the letter.
The words felt impossible.
After everything.
After Vincent protected her.
After he showed her the truth about Isabella.
After he told her that her mother had saved his life.
There it was.
The warning.
Never trust Vincent Moretti.
She slowly lowered the paper.
"Why?"
Vincent didn't answer.
Because he didn't have one.
And that scared him more than anything.
Elena looked at him.
"You knew my mother."
"Not the way you think."
"Then tell me."
Vincent looked away.
For the first time, Elena saw something she had never seen before.
Guilt.
Not anger.
Not pride.
Not the cold confidence everyone feared.
Guilt.
"What happened fifteen years ago?"
Vincent remained silent.
Elena stepped closer.
"What happened to my mother?"
The question hit harder than any weapon.
Vincent closed his eyes.
"I don't remember everything."
She looked surprised.
"What?"
"I was ten years old."
His voice became quieter.
"There was a fire."
The memory returned.
Smoke.
Screaming.
A woman carrying him.
A hand pushing him away from danger.
Isabella.
"Someone attacked the mansion."
Vincent continued.
"My father told me never to speak about that night."
"Why?"
"Because he said remembering would put me in danger."
Elena stared.
"And you believed him?"
"I was a child."
The answer was honest.
And that made it worse.
The archive door suddenly unlocked.
Both of them turned.
Nobody should have been able to open it.
Vincent immediately moved in front of Elena.
A habit.
A protective instinct.
The person who entered was not Marcus.
Not a guard.
It was Margaret.
Her face was pale.
"We need to leave."
Vincent frowned.
"What happened?"
She looked at the letter in Elena's hand.
Then froze.
"You found it."
Elena held the paper.
"You knew?"
Margaret didn't answer.
That was enough.
"You knew my mother wrote this?"
Margaret slowly nodded.
"Yes."
Elena's expression hardened.
"Everyone knew something except me."
Margaret looked hurt.
"Your mother wanted it that way."
"Why?"
"Because being innocent was the only way to keep you alive."
Elena laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
"My whole life was a lie."
Margaret stepped closer.
"No."
She shook her head.
"Your whole life was protected."
"From what?"
Margaret looked at Vincent.
Then whispered:
"From the Moretti family."
The words landed heavily.
Vincent didn't react.
But his eyes changed.
Because deep down, he knew.
His family had never been as clean as he believed.
Upstairs, Celeste waited in her private room.
She had not moved for twenty minutes.
The message remained on her phone.
Finish what Isabella started.
She deleted it.
Then another appeared.
You can't run from your father's debt.
Celeste froze.
Her father's debt.
Not money.
Not business.
Something else.
Something she had spent years hiding.
She walked to the mirror.
Everyone saw her as powerful.
Elegant.
Untouchable.
But nobody knew the truth.
She had entered the Moretti family for one reason.
Not love.
Not ambition.
A promise.
Her father had made a deal.
A deal that saved his life.
And destroyed hers.
A knock came at the door.
Celeste immediately wiped the fear from her face.
"Come in."
A man entered.
One of Vincent's private guards.
"Miss Vane."
"What?"
"The archive was accessed."
Celeste stayed silent.
"By Vincent and Elena."
Her fingers tightened.
"What did they find?"
The guard hesitated.
"A file."
"What file?"
He looked down.
"The Isabella Marlowe file."
For the first time, Celeste looked genuinely afraid.
"Who else knows?"
The guard swallowed.
"Everyone will know soon."
Vincent returned to the main hall with Elena and Margaret.
The mansion felt different.
Like the walls themselves knew the truth was coming out.
Vincent stopped near the staircase.
"Margaret."
She turned.
"Where is Marcus?"
The old woman looked away.
"He's not working alone."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"Who is helping him?"
Margaret hesitated.
Then said:
"The person who has been controlling this mansion for years."
Everyone became silent.
Elena looked at her.
"Celeste?"
Margaret didn't answer.
But she didn't need to.
That evening, Vincent called every senior member of the Moretti organization.
The meeting room was full.
Business partners.
Security leaders.
Family representatives.
People who had built the empire.
People who protected secrets.
Vincent stood at the head of the table.
"I found evidence that someone inside this organization betrayed my father."
Nobody moved.
"And that person helped cover up Isabella Marlowe's disappearance."
Whispers started.
Vincent placed the documents on the table.
"This ends tonight."
A voice interrupted.
"Are you sure you want to open that door?"
Everyone turned.
Celeste stood at the entrance.
Elegant.
Calm.
Perfect.
But Vincent noticed.
Her eyes were different.
"You knew."
It wasn't a question.
Celeste walked inside.
"I knew pieces."
"Pieces?"
"Enough to understand that this would destroy you."
Vincent stared.
"Did you help them?"
The entire room waited.
Celeste looked at him.
And for a second, she looked like she wanted to tell the truth.
Then she said:
"Yes."
The room exploded with whispers.
Elena looked shocked.
Vincent didn't move.
"Why?"
Celeste's voice became softer.
"Because I was trying to protect you."
Nobody believed her.
Not even Vincent.
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
She looked at Elena.
"Because your mother never told you the whole story either."
Elena stepped forward.
"What does that mean?"
Celeste looked at her.
"Your mother knew who your father was."
The room became silent.
Vincent froze.
Elena stared.
"What?"
Celeste took a breath.
"Isabella didn't just work for the Moretti family."
She looked at Vincent.
"She was in love with Vincent's father."
The words shocked everyone.
"And Elena was not the secret child."
A pause.
"She was the secret witness."
Later that night, Vincent returned to the archive alone.
He needed answers.
Real answers.
Not more half-truths.
He opened the original file again.
A hidden page appeared behind the documents.
A page that had been attached years ago.
He pulled it out.
And his blood ran cold.
Because the page contained a confession.
Not from Isabella.
Not from his father.
From someone else.
The handwriting was familiar.
The final line read:
"I was there when Isabella Marlowe disappeared."
Vincent looked at the signature.
His hands stopped moving.
May you like
Because the name written at the bottom was...
Elena Marlowe.
