Chapter 10 - The Betrayal That Nearly Destroyed Everything

Isabella Marlowe stood in the Moretti mansion holding Elena’s childhood photograph: "I came back because someone is trying to kill my daughter." When Vincent Moretti confronted her, he discovered a hidden mark on the back of the photograph. But five words were written beneath it: "Your father knew everything." Vincent realized the biggest betrayal was not from an enemy outside the empire.
It came from the man who built it.
Nobody moved.
The woman standing in front of them was impossible.
For fifteen years, everyone believed Isabella Marlowe was dead.
A memory.
A mistake.
A name erased from the Moretti family history.
But she was standing there.
Alive.
Older.
Tired.
Looking at Elena like she had spent every day waiting for this moment.
Elena couldn't breathe.
Her entire body froze.
"Mom?"
The word came out like a whisper.
Isabella's eyes filled with tears.
But she didn't move.
Because she knew.
One step forward could destroy the protection she had built for fifteen years.
"Elena."
Her voice broke.
"I am sorry."
That was all it took.
Elena walked forward.
Not quickly.
Not dramatically.
Slowly.
Like she was afraid the woman in front of her would disappear again.
Then she stopped.
Because something inside her remembered.
Not a memory.
A feeling.
Her mother's hands.
Her mother's voice.
Her mother's fear.
"You left me."
The pain in those three words was worse than anger.
Isabella lowered her eyes.
"I know."
"Do you know how many nights I waited?"
"I know."
"Do you know how many times I thought you didn't love me?"
Isabella closed her eyes.
"I know."
A tear fell.
"But I did it because I loved you."
Elena looked away.
Because she wanted to believe her.
But fifteen years of pain did not disappear in one moment.
Vincent watched silently.
For years, he had imagined meeting Isabella again.
He imagined anger.
Questions.
Revenge.
But he never imagined this.
A mother and daughter standing in front of each other after losing half their lives.
He looked at Isabella.
"You were alive."
She turned toward him.
"Yes."
"And you let everyone believe you were dead."
"I had no choice."
Vincent's expression hardened.
"Everyone thought you betrayed my family."
"I know."
"Everyone thought you destroyed my father."
"I know."
"Why didn't you come back?"
Isabella looked at him.
Because she remembered something.
Something painful.
"Because your father asked me not to."
The room went silent.
Vincent froze.
"My father?"
Isabella nodded.
"He knew."
"About you?"
"About everything."
Vincent stepped closer.
"Explain."
Isabella looked at Elena.
Then at him.
"Your father discovered the truth before anyone else."
"What truth?"
Her voice became quieter.
"The truth about Adrian Moretti."
The forgotten name.
The hidden brother.
The secret that destroyed two families.
"Adrian was alive."
Vincent stared.
"And?"
Isabella looked at Elena.
"He had a daughter."
Vincent already knew.
But hearing it again made it real.
"Elena."
Isabella nodded.
"Your father found out."
"Then why hide her?"
"Because Adrian wanted her dead."
The room froze.
Elena looked at her mother.
"Why?"
Isabella's face changed.
Because this was the part she had never wanted to say.
"Because Elena was the only person who could prove what he did."
Everyone gathered in the main hall.
Nobody had been officially called.
But everyone came.
Because rumors moved faster than orders inside the Moretti mansion.
The dead woman had returned.
The maid was not a maid.
The family had another secret heir.
The empire was built on lies.
Celeste stood at the edge of the room.
Watching.
Silent.
Vincent noticed her.
"You knew."
Celeste looked at him.
"Yes."
The answer surprised everyone.
Elena turned.
"You knew my mother was alive?"
Celeste didn't look away.
"Yes."
The anger in Elena's face grew.
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
Celeste swallowed.
"Because I was afraid."
Nobody expected that answer.
Not from Celeste.
"What could you possibly be afraid of?"
Celeste looked at Vincent.
"Your father."
Vincent's expression changed.
Celeste continued.
"Everyone thinks your father was the strongest man in the family."
A pause.
"He wasn't."
She looked around the mansion.
"He was the man most afraid of losing control."
Vincent said nothing.
Because a part of him knew.
His father had always controlled everything.
Every person.
Every secret.
Every outcome.
Even from the grave.
Later that night, Isabella and Vincent spoke alone.
The old office.
The same place where everything began.
Vincent placed the birth records on the desk.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Isabella looked at the documents.
"Because you were still his son."
The words hurt.
Vincent looked at her.
"What does that mean?"
"It means I didn't know if you would protect Elena."
"I have protected her."
"Now."
Isabella looked at him.
"But fifteen years ago, you were a child who trusted the wrong people."
Vincent became silent.
Because she was right.
"I hated your family."
A pause.
"But I never hated you."
Vincent looked down.
"Why?"
"Because you were the only person who tried to save my daughter."
The words affected him.
Because he had spent his entire life believing he was part of the problem.
Not the solution.
In another part of the mansion, Celeste opened a hidden drawer.
Inside was a small black envelope.
She stared at it.
She had kept it for fifteen years.
The final thing her father gave her.
A confession.
A threat.
A warning.
She finally opened it.
Inside was one page.
If Isabella returns, use Elena.
If Vincent discovers the truth, remove him.
Celeste's hands shook.
Because she finally understood.
She had never been protecting the Moretti family.
She had been protecting the person controlling it.
Her phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"You let Isabella return."
Celeste froze.
"Who is this?"
A quiet laugh.
"You already know."
Her face turned pale.
Because only one person called her that way.
The person who had disappeared fifteen years ago.
The person she believed was dead.
The voice whispered:
"Tell Vincent the truth before I do."
The call ended.
Celeste slowly lowered the phone.
Then the lights in her room flickered.
Once.
Twice.
May you like
And when she turned around...
Someone was standing behind her.
