Chapter 12 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Adrian Moretti stood inside the mansion entrance looking at Elena: "I came back because my daughter was never supposed to survive." When Vincent Moretti confronted him, he discovered an old family contract hidden inside Adrian’s coat. But one sentence was marked in black ink: "Vincent Moretti is the true target." Vincent realized Adrian had not returned to reclaim his empire.

He had returned to finish what he started.

Nobody moved.

The entire mansion stood frozen.

The man everyone believed was dead was standing beneath the same chandelier where his name had been erased fifteen years ago.

Adrian Moretti.

Vincent's uncle.

The forgotten heir.

The ghost from the past.

Elena stared at him.

She didn't recognize his face.

But she recognized the feeling.

The same feeling she had when she remembered that night.

Fear.

Her fingers tightened.

"My father?"

Adrian smiled slightly.

Not warmly.

Not lovingly.

Like someone looking at something he had spent years searching for.

"Yes."

Elena stepped back.

"Where were you?"

The question was simple.

But everyone heard the pain behind it.

Adrian looked at her.

"I was waiting."

"For what?"

"For the right moment."

Vincent immediately stepped between them.

"She is not a possession."

Adrian looked at him.

A small smile appeared.

"Still protecting people who aren't yours."

Vincent's expression hardened.

"You disappeared."

"I survived."

"You let everyone believe you were dead."

"I needed them to."

"Why?"

Adrian looked around the mansion.

"The same reason everyone here lies."

A pause.

"Power."

The guards surrounded the room.

But nobody moved.

Because Vincent hadn't given an order.

And everyone knew why.

This wasn't a normal threat.

This was family.

The most dangerous kind.

Vincent looked at Adrian.

"Why now?"

Adrian removed the old contract from his coat.

"I was waiting for Elena to come home."

Elena frowned.

"I never came here for you."

"I know."

Adrian looked at her.

"You came here because of your mother."

The mention of Isabella changed everything.

Vincent noticed.

Elena's expression became colder.

"What did you do to her?"

Adrian didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

Vincent stepped forward.

"Answer her."

Adrian looked at him.

"You still think everything is simple."

"No."

Vincent's voice was low.

"I think you are afraid."

The room went quiet.

Because nobody spoke to Adrian like that.

Not even Vincent's father had.

Adrian smiled.

"Your father said the same thing."

Vincent froze.

"My father knew you were alive."

"Of course."

The answer came easily.

"He knew everything."

Isabella entered the room.

The moment Adrian saw her, his expression changed.

Not much.

But enough.

Pain.

Regret.

Anger.

Everything hidden behind years of silence.

"Isabella."

Her name sounded strange coming from him.

Elena looked between them.

"You knew each other."

Isabella didn't answer.

Adrian looked at her.

"You told her I was dead."

"Because you wanted her dead."

The room froze.

Elena looked at her mother.

"What?"

Adrian's expression darkened.

"That isn't true."

Isabella stepped forward.

"I saw what you did."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You saw what you thought you saw."

"No."

Isabella shook her head.

"I saw you holding the weapon."

Vincent looked at Adrian.

"Weapon?"

Elena looked confused.

"What weapon?"

Isabella's voice became quieter.

"The night your father attacked the mansion..."

She looked at Vincent.

"Adrian was there."

A long pause.

"He wasn't trying to save us."

The truth came out slowly.

Like something rotten finally exposed.

Fifteen years ago.

Adrian had returned to the Moretti mansion.

Not as family.

As a rival.

He believed the empire belonged to him.

He believed Vincent's father stole his future.

And when he discovered Elena existed...

Everything changed.

Because Elena was not just a child.

She was evidence.

Evidence that Adrian had a secret life.

Evidence that could destroy his claim to the Moretti legacy.

"So you wanted to erase her."

Vincent's voice was filled with disgust.

Adrian looked at him.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Vincent shook his head.

"I understand perfectly."

Adrian laughed softly.

"You think your father was better?"

The words stopped him.

Because that was the question nobody wanted to answer.

Adrian continued.

"Your father built this empire with blood."

He looked around.

"Everyone here is pretending they are different from me."

Silence.

Because there was truth hidden inside the accusation.

But truth did not excuse betrayal.

Later that night, Vincent found Elena alone in the library.

She was staring at the old family records.

"I don't know who I am anymore."

Vincent stood near the door.

"Elena."

"My mother lied."

A pause.

"My father lied."

She looked at the documents.

"Everyone lied."

Vincent walked closer.

"But you didn't."

She looked at him.

"You don't know that."

"Yes, I do."

"How?"

Vincent answered honestly.

"Because you had every reason to hate this family."

A pause.

"But you still helped people inside this mansion."

Elena looked away.

"I was just trying to survive."

"No."

Vincent shook his head.

"You were trying to be kind in a place where kindness was treated like weakness."

For the first time, Elena didn't have an answer.

Meanwhile, Adrian met with several senior members of the Moretti organization.

The men who had waited years for the old heir's return.

They bowed.

Not to Vincent.

To Adrian.

"You still have supporters."

Vincent's voice came from the doorway.

Adrian turned.

"I always did."

Vincent looked at the men.

"Leave."

Nobody moved.

Adrian smiled.

"See?"

"This family always chooses power."

Vincent stepped inside.

"No."

He looked at the men.

"This family chooses fear."

The room became tense.

Vincent continued:

"And I'm ending that."

Adrian laughed.

"You think you can change the empire?"

"No."

Vincent looked at him.

"I think I can destroy the part that deserves to fall."

That night, Elena received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

Your mother never told you the final truth.

Attached was a photograph.

A document.

A birth record.

But this one was different.

Elena opened it.

Her face changed.

Because the father listed on the document was not Adrian.

Not Vincent's uncle.

Not anyone from the Moretti family.

It was someone else.

Someone whose name she had never heard.

She immediately ran to Vincent.

"Vincent."

He turned.

"What happened?"

She handed him the document.

He read it.

And his expression changed.

Because the person listed as Elena's biological father was...

Someone who had been standing inside the mansion the entire time.

Someone they trusted.

Someone who had helped protect the Moretti empire.

Then the mansion alarm suddenly started ringing.

A guard rushed into the room.

"Mr. Moretti."

Vincent looked up.

"What?"

The guard's face was pale.

"We found someone in the underground archive."

"Who?"

The guard swallowed.

Then said:

"The person who has been sending the messages."

A pause.

"And they are asking to see Elena."

Vincent reached for his weapon.

"Who is it?"

The guard looked terrified.

Because the answer made no sense.

"It's..."

The guard stopped.

May you like

Then whispered:

"Elena's real father."
