Chapter 13 - The Choice That Changed the Mafia Family

Elena stood in the underground archive holding the birth record: "Tell me who my real father is." When Vincent Moretti opened the hidden archive door, he discovered a man who had protected the Moretti family for twenty years. But the old security file revealed one shocking truth: "He was there the night Isabella disappeared." Vincent realized the final betrayal had been hiding in plain sight.

The archive door opened slowly.

The person standing behind it did not look dangerous.

That was the first thing Vincent noticed.

He was older.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

No weapon.

No anger.

Just a man who looked tired from carrying a secret for too long.

Elena stared at him.

She didn't know his face.

But something about him felt familiar.

The man looked at her.

And his eyes filled with tears.

"Elena."

She stepped back.

"Who are you?"

The man swallowed.

Then he answered.

"My name is Daniel Hale."

Margaret's face immediately changed.

Because she knew that name.

"Daniel..."

The man looked at her.

"You thought I was dead too."

Nobody spoke.

Vincent looked between them.

"Explain."

Daniel entered the archive slowly.

"I was Isabella's brother."

Elena froze.

"My uncle?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

Another secret.

Another hidden family member.

Another piece of a life Elena never knew existed.

Vincent stared at the document.

"Then why was your name on her birth record?"

Daniel looked at Elena.

"Because I was the one who protected her."

Elena frowned.

"Protected me?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your real father wanted you gone."

The words were painful.

"But I didn't."

The archive became a place filled with ghosts.

Every person inside carried something they had hidden.

Vincent looked at Daniel.

"You knew about Adrian."

"Yes."

"You knew Isabella was alive."

"Yes."

"You knew Elena was here."

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

Vincent's expression hardened.

"Then why did you wait?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Because Isabella asked me to."

The answer surprised everyone.

"Why?"

Daniel looked at Elena.

"Because she wanted you to choose your own life."

Elena shook her head.

"That doesn't make sense."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Your mother knew what would happen if you discovered the truth too soon."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Her voice broke.

"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."

A pause.

"But nobody asked me what I wanted."

Nobody answered.

Because she was right.

For fifteen years, everyone had made choices for Elena.

Her mother.

The Moretti family.

Even the people who claimed to love her.

Daniel looked down.

"I am sorry."

Elena looked at him.

"Sorry doesn't give me those years back."

"No."

Daniel nodded.

"But maybe the truth can stop taking more years from you."

Vincent brought Daniel to the main hall.

The entire family gathered.

Adrian stood near the staircase.

When he saw Daniel, his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"You."

Daniel looked at him.

"You remember me."

Adrian smiled.

"How could I forget?"

The room became tense.

Vincent noticed.

"You two know each other."

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"He was there."

Elena's breathing stopped.

"There?"

Daniel nodded.

"The night Isabella disappeared."

Adrian's face darkened.

"Be careful with your accusations."

Daniel didn't move.

"I saw everything."

Vincent stepped forward.

"What did you see?"

Daniel looked at Elena.

Then answered.

"Adrian didn't kill Isabella."

Everyone froze.

"But he tried to take Elena."

Elena looked at Adrian.

The man she had just discovered was her biological father.

The man who claimed he returned for her.

The man who had spent years hiding.

"Why?"

Adrian remained silent.

Daniel answered.

"Because Adrian believed Elena was the key to the Moretti empire."

Vincent frowned.

"How?"

"Because the inheritance documents named Elena as the rightful successor."

The room exploded.

Whispers.

Shock.

Anger.

Elena stared.

"I never wanted this."

Daniel looked at her.

"I know."

"Then why involve me?"

"Because whether you want it or not, they will always come for what you represent."

Adrian suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned.

"You all keep pretending you are different."

His voice echoed.

"But every person here wants the same thing."

Vincent looked at him.

"What?"

"Control."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Your father wanted control."

He looked at Vincent.

"I wanted control."

Then he looked at Elena.

"And now you are pretending you don't want it."

Elena stared.

"I don't."

Adrian smiled.

"That's why you are dangerous."

Nobody understood.

Except Vincent.

Because that was exactly what made Elena different.

She didn't want power.

She wanted truth.

Later that evening, Vincent found Elena in the garden.

She was sitting alone.

The mansion felt different.

Not like home.

Like a battlefield waiting to begin.

"I don't know where I belong."

Vincent stood beside her.

"You don't have to decide tonight."

She looked at him.

"Everyone keeps telling me who I am."

A pause.

"Adrian says I'm his daughter."

"Isabella says I'm her daughter."

"These documents say I'm an heir."

Her eyes filled.

"But nobody says I'm just Elena."

Vincent sat beside her.

"I do."

She looked at him.

"You do?"

"Yes."

A quiet moment passed.

"You are the person who walked into this mansion and refused to bow."

A small smile appeared.

"The first person who made everyone here uncomfortable."

Elena laughed softly.

For the first time in days.

A real laugh.

Vincent looked at her.

And realized something.

He was no longer protecting her because of a promise.

He was protecting her because he wanted to.

That night, the Moretti council made their decision.

They would not accept Elena as heir.

They feared change.

They feared losing control.

And someone inside the council had already chosen a side.

Adrian.

The old members gathered secretly.

A plan was created.

Remove Vincent.

Remove Elena.

Restore the old order.

But they forgot one thing.

Vincent had spent his entire life learning how powerful people destroyed others.

And he knew exactly how to stop them.

Near midnight, Vincent received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

Your enemies are closer than you think.

Attached was a photograph.

The council meeting.

Taken from inside the room.

Vincent stared.

Someone had been spying.

Someone close.

He immediately went downstairs.

But before he reached the council room, he saw the door was already open.

Inside, everyone was silent.

Too silent.

Vincent entered.

And froze.

Because every member of the council was standing.

Except one.

One person was lying on the floor.

And beside the body was a message written in red ink:

"Ask Elena who she really remembers."

Vincent turned around.

Because behind him, Elena was standing there.

May you like

Holding the same weapon used fifteen years ago.

The weapon that belonged to Isabella.
