Chapter 6 - The Woman Everyone Feared Lost Control

Elena stood inside the underground archive holding a gun with shaking hands: "Tell me why my mother died protecting your family." When Vincent Moretti faced her, he discovered the weapon belonged to one of his own security officers. But engraved beneath the handle were three words: "For Isabella Marlowe." Vincent realized Elena had not come to destroy his empire.
She had come to uncover who destroyed hers.
The room became completely silent.
Vincent stared at Elena.
Not because of the gun.
Because of her eyes.
There was no hatred there.
Only pain.
The kind of pain someone carried for years without allowing anyone to see it.
"Elena."
His voice was careful.
Like one wrong word could break everything.
She held the gun tighter.
"Don't."
The warning was quiet.
But Vincent stopped.
Because for the first time since she entered his mansion, Elena looked truly afraid.
Not afraid of him.
Afraid of the truth.
"How did you get that?"
Vincent looked at the weapon.
Elena lowered her eyes for a second.
"I found it in my mother's things."
"Your mother owned a security weapon?"
"No."
She looked back at him.
"Someone wanted her to have it."
Vincent frowned.
The details were becoming more confusing.
Every answer created another question.
"Elena, put the gun down."
She didn't move.
"Fifteen years ago, my mother disappeared."
Vincent remained silent.
"I spent my entire life believing she abandoned me."
Her voice became softer.
"But yesterday I found out everyone lied."
The gun trembled slightly.
"My mother wasn't running away."
Vincent looked at the file on the desk.
The same file that had destroyed everything he thought he knew.
"No."
Elena looked at him.
"No?"
Vincent stepped closer.
"She was trying to protect someone."
"Who?"
He looked at her.
And the answer hurt both of them.
"You."
Elena froze.
The gun lowered slightly.
"What?"
Vincent took the letter from his father.
"Your mother saved my life."
Elena stared.
"That doesn't make sense."
"I know."
"Then explain it."
Vincent looked down.
For years, he had believed his father was a victim.
A powerful man betrayed by someone close.
But now he wasn't sure anymore.
"Fifteen years ago, there was an attack on this mansion."
Elena listened.
"Someone tried to kill me."
Her expression changed.
"I was ten years old."
Vincent continued.
"My father told everyone it was an accident."
"Was it?"
"No."
The answer came immediately.
"It was planned."
Elena looked at the weapon in her hand.
"And my mother?"
Vincent swallowed.
"She found out who planned it."
A long pause.
"And that's why she disappeared."
The sound of footsteps echoed above them.
Vincent immediately turned.
Someone was coming.
Too fast.
Too confident.
He moved toward Elena.
"Hide."
She looked at him.
"What?"
"Now."
For once, she listened.
They moved behind the archive shelves.
The underground door opened.
A man entered.
Vincent recognized him instantly.
Marcus Vale.
The head of Moretti security.
The man who had protected the family for twenty years.
The man everyone trusted.
"Interesting."
Marcus looked around.
"You found the archive."
Vincent stepped out.
"Why are you here?"
Marcus smiled.
"Because you were never supposed to find it."
Elena's face changed.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it before.
Years ago.
A memory.
A dark room.
Her mother whispering.
"Don't forget that voice."
Marcus looked toward the shelves.
"You brought her here."
Vincent's eyes narrowed.
"How do you know Elena is here?"
Marcus smiled.
"Because she was the reason I came."
The answer was enough.
Vincent understood.
Marcus wasn't looking for the files.
He was looking for Elena.
"Why?"
Marcus didn't answer.
Instead, he pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
A photograph of Isabella.
And beside her...
A baby.
Elena.
Marcus looked at Vincent.
"Do you know what Isabella discovered before she died?"
Vincent stayed silent.
"That the Moretti family had a weakness."
"What weakness?"
Marcus smiled.
"Love."
The word sounded like an insult.
"Your father loved Isabella like family."
Vincent's expression hardened.
"Careful."
Marcus ignored him.
"He trusted her."
"And?"
"And she became the only person who knew where the real power came from."
Elena stepped forward.
"You killed her."
Marcus looked at her.
Almost amused.
"No."
A pause.
"I saved this family from her."
Vincent's anger appeared.
"Don't lie."
Marcus looked at him.
"Your father thought the same thing."
Then he said something that made Vincent freeze.
"Ask yourself why your father never searched for Isabella."
Silence.
Because that was true.
After Isabella disappeared, Vincent's father never publicly searched.
Never spoke her name.
Never investigated.
He simply accepted the story.
Unless...
Unless he knew.
Upstairs, Celeste stood in the main hall.
Her phone showed one message.
The sender:
Marcus.
The message was short.
He found the archive.
Celeste stared at the screen.
For the first time in years, she looked terrified.
A servant approached.
"Miss Vane?"
Celeste quickly locked her phone.
"Leave."
The servant bowed and disappeared.
Celeste walked toward the window.
Her reflection stared back.
The woman everyone feared.
The woman who always controlled the room.
But nobody knew the truth.
She had spent fifteen years protecting a secret.
A secret that was now destroying everything.
Her phone vibrated again.
Another message.
This time from an unknown number.
You failed to stop Vincent.
Now finish what Isabella started.
Celeste's hand shook.
Because she knew exactly who sent it.
The one person she had hoped was gone forever.
Back underground, Vincent faced Marcus.
"You were there that night."
Marcus smiled.
"Yes."
"You saw what happened."
"Yes."
"And you let Isabella disappear."
Marcus looked at Elena.
"She made a choice."
Elena's face turned cold.
"My mother would never abandon me."
"No."
Marcus nodded.
"She wouldn't."
That answer surprised everyone.
Marcus stepped closer.
"That's why she left you a message."
Elena froze.
"What message?"
Marcus reached inside his coat.
He removed an old envelope.
A familiar handwriting.
Isabella.
Elena stopped breathing.
"My mother..."
Marcus held the envelope.
"She wanted you to have this when you were old enough."
Vincent moved forward.
"Give it to her."
Marcus smiled.
"You don't understand."
The lights in the archive suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then went dark.
A loud sound came from the entrance.
The underground door locked automatically.
Vincent turned.
"Marcus."
But Marcus was already gone.
Only the envelope remained.
Sitting on the table.
Elena picked it up with trembling fingers.
Her mother's handwriting was on the front.
But beneath her name was another line.
A warning.
For Elena.
Do not trust Vincent Moretti.
Elena looked at Vincent.
May you like
And before either of them could speak, the envelope began to reveal a hidden second page with a name written underneath...
Celeste Vane.
