Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Buried Her Own Name

A woman stepped from the hidden doorway and whispered: "Adrian... you were never supposed to know I survived."

When Adrian Valenti faced the mother he believed was dead, he discovered an old recording hidden beneath her photograph. But one sentence was written across the tape: "Your son was the first experiment." Adrian realized his father had not created monsters around him. He had created him.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman standing in front of Adrian looked exactly like the memory he had spent twelve years trying to forget.

His mother.

Isabella Valenti.

The woman he watched disappear.

The woman he buried.

The woman everyone told him was gone forever.

But she was alive.

Standing only a few feet away.

Adrian stared at her.

His mind rejected what his eyes were seeing.

"You died."

The words came out quietly.

Isabella looked down.

"I needed you to believe that."

A bitter smile appeared on Adrian’s face.

"So everyone lied to me."

Her eyes filled with pain.

"Yes."

That answer hurt more than any excuse.

Because he expected denial.

He expected explanations.

He expected another lie.

But she admitted it.

Immediately.

Adrian stepped closer.

"You let me think you were dead."

"I had no choice."

"Everyone says that."

His voice became colder.

"Daniel said it. Elena said it. My father said it."

A pause.

"And somehow, I was always the one who had to suffer."

Isabella looked at him.

"You think I wanted to leave you?"

Adrian said nothing.

Because he didn't know.

For years, he had imagined this moment.

He imagined finding his mother.

He imagined asking why she abandoned him.

He imagined hearing an answer that would finally make sense.

But standing here now...

he realized there was no answer that could erase twelve years.

Isabella looked toward Lily and Sophia.

"The children are the reason I stayed hidden."

Adrian followed her gaze.

"You knew about them?"

"I knew everything."

Elena stepped forward.

"Then why didn't you help us?"

Isabella looked at her.

A painful silence passed.

"Because I was trapped too."

Elena shook her head.

"You were powerful."

"No."

Isabella’s voice became soft.

"I was a prisoner."

She walked toward the table.

She picked up one of the files.

"Your father didn't just control money."

She opened it.

"He controlled people."

Adrian looked at the documents.

Names.

Dates.

Experiments.

Medical reports.

Everything.

His father had built an entire system around control.

But one file caught Adrian’s attention.

A black folder.

Different from the others.

No name.

No date.

Only one symbol.

The same symbol on Lily's bracelet.

"What is this?"

Isabella looked at it.

Her face changed.

"Don't open that."

Adrian immediately noticed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not manipulation.

Not acting.

Fear.

And that made him open it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A younger Adrian.

A child.

Standing inside a hospital room.

Connected to machines.

Elena covered her mouth.

"No..."

Daniel looked away.

Because he already knew.

Adrian stared at the image.

"When was this taken?"

Nobody answered.

"When?"

Isabella whispered:

"You were eight."

The room became silent.

"I don't remember this."

"Your father made sure you wouldn't."

Adrian looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Isabella struggled to speak.

"Your father believed emotions were weaknesses."

A pause.

"He wanted to remove them."

Adrian stared.

"You experimented on your own son?"

Isabella closed her eyes.

"I tried to stop him."

"But you failed."

The words cut deeper than any accusation.

She nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian turned away.

For the first time in years, he didn't know what to do.

He had fought enemies.

He had survived attacks.

He had built an empire.

But he never knew he was fighting the person who created him.

Sophia slowly walked toward him.

"Are you angry?"

Adrian looked down.

The little girl was watching him.

Waiting.

Afraid.

And suddenly he understood.

She wasn't afraid of him.

She was afraid he would leave.

Just like everyone else.

Adrian lowered himself to her level.

"No."

Sophia looked surprised.

"You're not?"

He shook his head.

"No."

A small moment of silence passed.

Then she asked:

"Do you hate me?"

Adrian froze.

Because he realized someone had made this child believe she was something to hate.

"No."

His voice softened.

"I don't."

Sophia looked at him.

"Then why did they hide me?"

Adrian had no answer.

Because the truth was painful.

The adults in their lives had created a world where children carried the consequences of their mistakes.

He looked at Lily.

Then Sophia.

Two innocent children.

Two lives controlled by secrets.

Two daughters who never asked to be part of a war.

A loud sound suddenly echoed above them.

An explosion.

The lights flickered.

Everyone reacted immediately.

Daniel grabbed Elena.

Adrian moved toward the children.

"Everyone down."

The hidden room shook.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Someone had found them.

Adrian's guards rushed into the hallway.

"Boss!"

"What happened?"

"Someone breached the building."

"Who?"

The guard hesitated.

Then handed Adrian a phone.

"There was no attack."

Adrian looked at him.

"Then what was it?"

The guard swallowed.

"The security system opened the doors."

Adrian frowned.

"Why?"

The guard looked terrified.

"Because someone used your access code."

Nobody spoke.

Adrian never shared his code.

Not with his men.

Not with Daniel.

Not with anyone.

Only one person knew it.

His father.

But his father was dead.

Adrian looked at the phone.

A message had appeared.

One sentence.

One name.

The same name that had haunted his family for years.

"Adrian, you finally found the children."

A pause.

Then another message appeared.

"I know because I was the one who hid them."

Adrian stared at the screen.

His blood went cold.

Because the sender was not his father.

Not Daniel.

Not Isabella.

It was someone else.

Someone standing above them.

Someone who had been watching everything.

The phone displayed the name.

May you like

And Adrian stopped breathing...

Marcus Valenti.
