Chapter 5 - The Mother Who Was Never Dead

A woman stood in the nightclub doorway and whispered: "Adrian... you don't know what your father did to us."
When Adrian Valenti confronted the woman he believed was dead, he found an old family ring hidden inside her coat. But one word was engraved beneath the symbol: "Traitor." Adrian realized the enemy he had searched for was inside his own bloodline.
The entire room became silent.
Adrian couldn't move.
He couldn't breathe.
For twelve years, he had lived with one truth.
His mother was dead.
He remembered the funeral.
The black suit.
The cold faces.
The way his father stood beside him and told him:
"Strong men don't cry."
Adrian had been seventeen years old.
Too young to understand.
Old enough to remember everything.
The woman standing in front of him was impossible.
But she was real.
Her eyes.
Her voice.
The small scar near her left hand.
Everything was exactly the same.
"Mother?"
The word left his mouth before he could stop it.
The woman looked at him.
And for the first time, her cold expression broke.
A tear appeared in her eye.
"Adrian."
Five years ago, Elena had imagined many ways her secrets would be exposed.
She imagined people finding Lily.
She imagined Daniel returning.
She imagined enemies discovering the truth.
But she never imagined Adrian standing between her and the woman who had caused her years of fear.
Because Elena knew her.
She knew exactly who she was.
And she knew why Lily was in danger.
"Get away from her," Elena whispered.
Everyone turned.
Adrian looked at Elena.
"What?"
Elena stepped closer.
"Get Lily and leave."
The woman smiled.
A small, cold smile.
"Still protecting her."
Elena’s face turned pale.
"You should have stayed away."
The woman looked at Lily.
"No."
Her voice became softer.
"I came back because she belongs to me."
Adrian immediately stepped in front of the stroller.
"No one takes my daughter."
The room froze.
Even Elena looked at him.
Because Adrian had finally said it.
My daughter.
Not a question.
Not a possibility.
A fact.
The woman studied him.
Then laughed quietly.
"You really think you know the truth."
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
"I know enough."
"No."
She stepped closer.
"You know what Daniel wanted you to know."
Adrian glanced toward his brother.
Daniel stood frozen.
Like a man waiting for a punishment he already deserved.
"You knew she was alive," Adrian said.
Daniel looked down.
"Yes."
"You knew my mother survived."
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
Daniel swallowed.
"I was trying to protect you."
Adrian walked toward him.
"You keep using that word."
His voice was quiet.
"Protect."
A pause.
"But everyone who says they protected me is the reason I lost everything."
Daniel didn't argue.
Because he knew.
He had no defense.
Elena watched the brothers.
She saw something she had never seen before.
Not power.
Not control.
Pain.
Adrian wasn't angry because of the betrayal.
He was angry because part of him still wanted to believe his family loved him.
The woman stepped forward.
"Adrian, you need to know what really happened that night."
He looked at her.
"The night you died?"
Her expression changed.
"That wasn't my death."
A pause.
"It was my escape."
Adrian said nothing.
The woman reached into her coat.
She removed an old photograph.
She placed it on the table.
Adrian picked it up.
The picture showed his father.
His mother.
Daniel.
And another man standing beside them.
A man Adrian recognized immediately.
His own uncle.
The man who had raised him after his mother's supposed death.
The man who had helped him build his empire.
"What is this?"
His mother looked at him.
"The truth."
Adrian turned the photograph over.
A date was written on the back.
The same date his mother disappeared.
But underneath it were words.
Words that made his stomach turn.
"Operation: Remove Adrian."
His fingers tightened around the photo.
"No."
His mother looked away.
"Your father didn't want you to inherit the family."
Adrian stared at her.
"He wanted me dead?"
Nobody answered.
Because the silence was enough.
Elena looked at Daniel.
"You knew."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I found out years later."
"And you still didn't tell him?"
"I tried."
Adrian looked at him.
"Then why didn't you?"
Daniel’s voice broke.
"Because every time I tried, someone close to us disappeared."
A cold feeling moved through the room.
Adrian understood.
All those years.
All those deaths.
All those betrayals.
Someone had been controlling everything from the shadows.
Someone inside his family.
His mother stepped closer.
"There is something else you need to know."
Adrian looked at her.
"What?"
She looked at Lily.
Then Elena.
Then him.
"Daniel wasn't the one who hid Elena."
A pause.
"He was protecting her from the person who created this entire nightmare."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
His mother didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward the nightclub cameras.
A small red light blinked.
Someone was watching.
Someone had been watching the entire time.
Adrian immediately turned.
"Take the cameras down."
His guards moved.
But before they reached the control room, every screen inside the nightclub turned on.
One by one.
The screens showed Adrian.
Elena.
Lily.
Daniel.
His mother.
A voice came through the speakers.
A voice Adrian recognized.
A voice he hadn't heard since childhood.
His father.
Dead for ten years.
"Hello, son."
Adrian froze.
The entire room held its breath.
The recording continued.
"I know you finally found them."
A pause.
"I know you found your mother."
Another pause.
"But there is one person you haven't found yet."
The screen changed.
A new image appeared.
A hospital room.
A newborn baby.
Another child.
Adrian stared.
Because the baby in the picture had the same silver bracelet as Lily.
Then the voice whispered:
"Your daughter was never the only child I left behind..."
The screen suddenly went black.
May you like
And from somewhere inside the nightclub...
a child cried.
