Chapter 2 - The Call From the Dead

Elena dropped the phone onto the table and whispered: "No... this can't be happening."

Adrian Valenti watched her freeze beside the baby stroller, holding a broken necklace that belonged to his missing brother. But one word was carved into the metal: "Forgive." Adrian realized Elena had been hiding a secret connected to his family.

The nightclub continued moving around them.

Music still played.

People still laughed.

Glasses still clinked against polished tables.

But Elena heard nothing.

All she could hear was the sound of her own heartbeat.

The phone screen remained lit.

One name.

One name she had spent five years trying to forget.

Daniel.

Her fingers trembled as she stared at it.

She had deleted his number.

Changed her phone.

Moved to another city.

Changed her entire life.

But some ghosts didn’t disappear.

They waited.

"Who is it?" Adrian asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Elena quickly grabbed the phone and turned it face down.

"No one."

Adrian looked at her.

He had built his entire empire by noticing small details.

The slight change in someone’s breathing.

The way their hands moved when they lied.

The fear hidden behind their eyes.

And Elena Ward was terrified.

Not of him.

Of the person calling.

"Nobody makes you look like that," Adrian said quietly.

Elena swallowed.

"You don't know me."

Adrian stepped closer.

"No."

His eyes moved toward the baby.

"But I know secrets."

For a moment, Elena thought about running.

She had done it before.

She had run when people got too close.

She had run when questions became dangerous.

She had run when Daniel disappeared and left her alone with a newborn child and a truth she couldn’t tell anyone.

But this time, she couldn’t move.

Because Adrian Valenti was standing between her and the life she had built.

And somehow...

she felt like he already knew pieces of it.

The baby suddenly moved inside the stroller.

Elena immediately turned away from Adrian.

"Shh, baby. Mommy is here."

The softness in her voice surprised him.

Adrian had seen Elena fight.

He had seen her endure humiliation.

He had seen her stand against men twice her size.

But this was different.

This was the real Elena.

The woman nobody else was allowed to see.

Adrian looked at the bracelet around the baby’s wrist.

The small silver design.

The same symbol.

The same mark that had belonged to his family.

Years ago, before his brother Daniel vanished, Adrian remembered seeing that bracelet in an old photograph.

His mother had worn the matching one.

There had been two.

One for each child.

But one disappeared the night Daniel disappeared.

The other was now on Elena’s baby.

Impossible.

Unless...

Adrian’s expression changed.

"What's your daughter's name?"

Elena hesitated.

"Why?"

"Answer me."

His tone was sharper now.

Elena looked at him carefully.

Then she whispered:

"Lily."

Adrian froze.

Not because of the name.

Because of what came next.

The baby’s blanket slipped slightly.

A small birthmark appeared near her shoulder.

Adrian stopped breathing.

He knew that mark.

He had seen it once.

On Daniel.

The night they were children, before everything fell apart.

"What is her father's name?" Adrian asked.

Elena immediately pulled the blanket back.

"That doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"You don't get to ask questions about my daughter."

Adrian stared at her.

For the first time in years, someone had spoken to him without fear.

Everyone else lowered their eyes.

Everyone else obeyed.

But Elena didn’t.

And somehow, that made him more interested.

"You brought her into a nightclub every night because you had no choice," Adrian said.

Elena looked away.

"You don't know anything about my life."

"I know you work twelve-hour shifts."

Her eyes lifted.

"I know you refuse every expensive gift customers offer you."

A pause.

"I know you hide your pain until nobody is watching."

Elena said nothing.

Adrian stepped closer.

"And I know someone is trying to keep you silent."

The words hit her harder than she expected.

Because he was right.

For five years, Elena had lived under one warning.

Never speak.

Never ask questions.

Never reveal Lily’s identity.

Or people would die.

She had followed those rules.

Until now.

The phone rang again.

This time, Adrian saw the screen.

Daniel.

His face changed.

Not dramatically.

Not enough for anyone else to notice.

But Elena noticed.

"You know that name," she whispered.

Adrian didn’t answer.

"You know him."

Silence.

"Who is Daniel to you?"

Adrian looked at the phone.

Then at Lily.

Then back at Elena.

"My brother."

The world seemed to stop.

Elena stepped backward.

"No."

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

"My brother disappeared five years ago."

"No."

"You knew him."

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"I never knew anyone named Daniel."

But Adrian saw the truth.

Because Elena was a terrible liar.

She lied with words.

But her eyes told him everything.

"You’re protecting him," Adrian said.

Elena shook her head.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Because the truth was dangerous.

Because the truth could destroy everything.

Because the man Adrian believed was dead was not the only secret Elena carried.

She looked at Lily.

Then quietly said:

"Daniel wasn't the person you think he was."

Adrian’s expression hardened.

"Careful."

Elena looked back at him.

"I spent five years trying to protect my daughter from the same people who destroyed your family."

The sentence landed between them.

For the first time, Adrian didn’t have an answer.

Because Elena wasn’t afraid of him.

She was warning him.

A man like Adrian was used to enemies hiding behind guns.

Behind money.

Behind power.

But Elena’s enemy was something else.

A truth.

A truth big enough to make her choose poverty over protection.

Adrian reached into his jacket and removed a small photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Elena looked down.

And the color disappeared from her face.

It was a picture of Daniel.

Standing beside a woman.

Holding a newborn baby.

The newborn baby wore the same silver bracelet.

Elena’s hands began shaking.

"Where did you get that?"

Adrian watched her carefully.

"From my father's locked safe."

Elena looked at him.

"He kept that picture hidden."

"Why?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Because he had spent years believing Daniel betrayed him.

Believing his brother abandoned their family.

But now...

everything was changing.

"Tell me the truth," Adrian said.

Elena looked at Lily.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I can't."

"Elena."

"You don't understand what happens if you know."

Adrian leaned closer.

"I've spent my entire life dealing with threats."

"No."

Her voice became smaller.

"You've spent your entire life fighting enemies you can see."

A long silence followed.

Then Elena’s phone buzzed.

Not a call.

A message.

She looked at the screen.

And immediately dropped it.

Adrian picked it up before she could.

The message contained only four words.

Four words that made his blood run cold.

Because they came from someone who should have been buried five years ago.

May you like

"Bring Lily home, Adrian."

And beneath it was a photo of a man standing outside the nightclub door...
