Chapter 7 - The Daughter Buried in the Shadows

A little girl held my hand and whispered: "Are you really my father?"
When Adrian Valenti entered the hidden room beneath the nightclub, he discovered a second child and a forgotten family file. But one sentence was written across the first page: "Subject Adrian Valenti was never meant to survive." Adrian realized his entire life had been controlled by someone else.
The hidden room was colder than Adrian expected.
Not because of the temperature.
Because of the memories.
The walls were covered with photographs.
Documents.
Old recordings.
Everything his father had hidden.
Everything Adrian had spent years trying to uncover.
But he never expected to find this.
A child.
Standing in front of him.
Looking at him like she had known him her entire life.
The little girl tightened her grip around his hand.
"Are you really my father?"
Adrian couldn't answer.
Not immediately.
Because the question carried too much weight.
Behind him, Elena stood frozen.
Lily was sleeping quietly in her stroller.
And now another child stood in front of them.
Another piece of a puzzle nobody wanted Adrian to solve.
"What is your name?" Adrian finally asked.
The girl looked at the floor.
"My name is Sophia."
A pause.
"Sophia Valenti."
The name hit him.
Not because he knew her.
Because he understood what it meant.
His father had given her the Valenti name.
The same name he had spent his life protecting.
The same name that brought fear throughout the city.
But this child had been hidden away like a secret.
"Who raised you?" Adrian asked.
Sophia looked toward the darkness behind her.
A woman stepped forward.
Adrian immediately recognized her.
Not because he had met her before.
Because he had seen her face in old family records.
"Clara."
His mother whispered the name.
The woman looked older.
Tired.
But alive.
Clara had been his father's assistant.
The woman everyone believed disappeared after his father died.
"What are you doing here?" Adrian asked.
Clara looked at him.
"Keeping her alive."
Adrian’s expression hardened.
"You were part of this."
"No."
Her voice shook.
"I was trying to fix it."
Adrian walked deeper into the room.
The walls were covered with files.
Each file had a name.
Each file had a date.
And every date was connected to his family.
He picked up one folder.
The label made his heart stop.
"Project Legacy."
Elena came closer.
"What is that?"
Adrian opened it.
Inside were medical reports.
DNA results.
Financial records.
Photos.
His father's handwriting covered every page.
"The children were never accidents."
Daniel’s voice came from behind him.
Adrian looked back.
His brother looked devastated.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Our father planned everything."
He pointed toward Sophia.
"And Lily."
Elena immediately stepped forward.
"No."
Daniel looked at her.
"He wanted children with specific bloodlines."
Adrian stared at him.
"Bloodlines?"
Daniel nodded.
"He believed the Valenti family had to continue through controlled heirs."
The room became silent.
Adrian looked at Sophia.
A child who had spent her entire life hidden.
A child who had no choice in any of this.
His anger changed.
It wasn't toward her.
It was toward the people who created this nightmare.
"How long has she been here?"
Clara answered.
"Since she was born."
Adrian looked at her.
"She has been locked underground since birth?"
Clara lowered her eyes.
"I kept her safe."
"Safe?"
His voice rose.
"This isn't safety."
Clara looked broken.
"It was the only place they couldn't reach her."
Adrian stared at the files again.
Then he saw something.
A document dated ten years ago.
Before Sophia was born.
Before Lily was born.
A plan.
A list.
Three names.
The first was Sophia.
The second was Lily.
The third...
Adrian stopped breathing.
Because the third name was his.
"Why is my name here?"
Nobody answered.
He turned the page.
The words were written clearly.
"Primary subject: Adrian Valenti."
Below it:
"Outcome: Remove emotional attachments. Eliminate resistance."
Adrian’s hands tightened.
His father wasn't just controlling the children.
He had been controlling Adrian too.
Every decision.
Every relationship.
Every loss.
Everything.
"Your father believed you were too emotional," Clara whispered.
Adrian looked at her.
"What?"
"He thought love made you weak."
A pause.
"He wanted to turn you into someone who could lead without hesitation."
Elena looked at Adrian.
And for the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.
The powerful mafia boss was not afraid of enemies.
He was afraid that his entire identity had been built on lies.
Sophia stepped closer.
"Mom said you would hate me."
Adrian looked down.
"Who is your mother?"
The girl hesitated.
Then pointed toward a small photograph on the table.
Adrian picked it up.
The woman in the picture was young.
Beautiful.
And familiar.
Elena looked at it.
Then gasped.
"No..."
Adrian looked at her.
"You know her?"
Elena’s face turned pale.
"She was my sister."
The room froze.
Nobody moved.
Adrian stared at Elena.
"You have a sister?"
"I did."
Her voice became quiet.
"She disappeared years ago."
Sophia looked at Elena.
"She told me you would find me."
Elena stepped back.
"Who told you?"
Sophia pointed at the photograph.
"My mother."
Adrian looked at the picture again.
The woman wasn't just connected to Sophia.
She was connected to Elena.
To Lily.
To everything.
Another secret.
Another hidden family member.
Another betrayal.
Then the lights inside the room flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The security system activated.
A red warning appeared on the wall.
"INTRUDER DETECTED."
Adrian immediately turned.
"Who entered?"
No one answered.
Then the old speakers inside the room turned on.
A familiar voice filled the hallway.
A voice that made everyone freeze.
His father's voice.
Again.
"Adrian."
The recording continued.
"If you are hearing this, it means you found the children."
Adrian stared at the speaker.
"Congratulations."
A pause.
"But you still haven't found the person who helped me create them."
The lights went completely dark.
Then a single door at the end of the hidden room slowly opened.
Someone was standing behind it.
Someone who had been listening the entire time.
And a woman’s voice whispered:
May you like
"Hello, Adrian."
"It has been twelve years since I watched you bury me..."
